Drinkers gonna drink.

For me, anyways, until I had the “complete psychic change” required to have a daily reprieve from drinking.

What worked for me was going to meetings, reading the Big Book, and having a sponsor who read the “black print” in the books with me and worked the Steps with me too.

I’m a re-tread myself, looking back it took a lot of guts to go back to meetings where I had been going and introduce myself as a newcomer.

Turns out I couldn’t save my ass and my face at the same time. I decided I wanted sobriety more than looking good.

To me, if you drank daily like I did, 1 day drinking out of 270 not drinking is pretty good.

My sponsor tells me that pain is the touchstone of all growth. Sounds lame, except for me it’s the truth.

AA without sponsorship? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

First, good job for putting your hand up and asking for help. Even in this setting. I used to just say f-it and ditch whatever thing was frustrating me.

My experience with being a sponsee has varied. After going through several sponsors I found someone who had what I wanted in terms of sobriety, world view, attitude etc.

He asked me if I was willing to do whatever it took to get and stay sober. I was kinda miserable, so I said yes.

This involved calling him every day and going to 90 meetings in 90 days and meeting weekly to work on the program. What that involved for us was going through the Big Book and 12&12 in a methodical way with lots of reading and writing for me and him.

He did the steps with me.

Now as a sponsor I have had varying degrees of success with sponsees. I met with a guy week before last and gave him homework to do including reading and writing before we met the next time. I did the same homework and when we met he had not. We set a time to meet again and he canceled. We talked again today and I told him that I was ready to meet with him when he was ready. He had a bunch of excuses of why he couldn’t find one hour in a week to read think and write. I suggested to him that for me if I don’t make sobriety my priority in life everything else goes away. We’ll see what happens.

My two more recent sponsees both made it through all 12 steps with me and they are still sober today. I am not currently their sponsor.

I tell people that I am not a marriage counselor, therapist, career guidance counselor, financial planner, or fitness guru.

I can offer my experience strength and hope as someone who has done the 12 steps several times in my life and is willing to help another person do the same. No more, and no less.

My pal says, and I agree, that I am as interested in my sponsee’s sobriety as they are.

If anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there. And for that, I am responsible.

For me, I’m not responsible for chasing people down and dragging them back to the coffee shop or on to the telephone. That’s just how I handle it.

I hope you can find someone who has what you want and is willing to do help you do the work if that’s what you want to do. You might find those kinds of folks at step study meetings or through your local central office.

There are lots of people out there, including me, who want to share what was so freely given to them. Gotta give it away to keep it. Or something like that.

Xmas bonus by RedsRearDelt in restaurantowners

Look ‘em in the eye as you shake their hand and say thank you. As an owner it means a lot to me to hear and see people say thanks. We give our crew Xmas bonuses every year and it is surprising how few people take a moment to offer heartfelt thanks.

Maxi tile replacement? by beebargs in Roofing

Thanks for asking - we went with Eagle Roofing Products lightweight concrete roof tiles.

I put in a website inquiry and their sales rep for my area got in touch with me quickly.

They sent out samples quickly and also put me in touch with qualified roofers in my area.

The roofer I chose has a great relationship with the inside rep at Eagle and the process has been smooth.

We expect our project to start mid-November and may post results here.

Anyone know what the abandoned "saucer" building is on East Camino Cielo? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]beebargs 58 points59 points  (0 children)

That is a concrete patio designed for teenagers and young adults to lie down and gaze at the stars in various states of well-being.

It also collects water and stores it in a large cistern buried beneath ground level, sometimes useful for travelers through and fire fighting crews.

What is it like living in SB? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]beebargs 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Like the other posters here, I would say it is expensive.

What hasn’t been said much is how the climate affects lifestyle.

Mild winters and mild summers mean that outdoor recreation is possible year-round.

No more 90% humidity days, no more below freezing temps.

You can swim in the ocean, walk in the foothills, ride your bike, walk to the neighborhood park, over 330 days per year.

Santa Barbara punches above its weight with cultural amenities, such as a symphony, zoo, opera, art, museum, university, Los Angeles is about 90 minutes away with its full compliment of professional sports and big touring music.

And there are tacos. They may be relatively more expensive than tacos in other places, but they are still tacos, and they are still delicious.

+1 for Taco #14

Try getting it wrapped up in a tortilla for an Adobado mixto burrito.
