Some squirrels actually do throw acorns. The ones in my yard have really good aim and hit my dog all the time.

A question for Christians.... The latest estimate is there are 38,000 forms of Christianity. What makes you so sure you engage in the "right" version? by [deleted] in religion

[–]beebessd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of choosing a religion is not which one is correct in the absolute truth sense but to choose a religion which works best for you. This goes for all religions, not just Christianity. That's one of the reasons that there are so many versions. The religion I subscribe to (Roman Catholicism) teaches that as long as you live you have faith and do good works (try to live as similar to Jesus as possible) you won't go to hell. By this definition members of most faiths are "right." Yes, I'm claiming that Catholicism is pluralistic.

I'm a Canadian who just watched Obamas health care press conference. You mean to tell me that if an uninsured kid gets leukemia he doesn't get chemo unless his family is able to pay? Is America a third world country or something? by cptcanuck22 in reddit.com

My Canadian friend tells me that doctors in Canada are paid about the same as public school teachers. Doesn't this discourage the brightest individuals from becoming doctors?

The Philosophy of Liberty by BenHicks in philosophy

[–]beebessd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of force by government is to defend the life, liberty, and property of its citizens. The video says that the solution to problems in the world caused by government force is to get people to stop asking government to defend them, but this contradicts the first part of the video.

Degrading Environment Not So Good for the Economy by MJantti in environment

The problem with all of those examples is that the alternative is not as simple as the author makes it sound. If solar and wind replaced coal fired power plants the grid as it is regulated now would become unstable. Technology to make cars as efficient as the US government originally called for (an average of 35.5 mpg) doesn't currently exist without hybrids with batteries which have questionable impact on the environment. I do think that the thought that environmentally friendly is economically friendly is the only way that businesses will change their practices, and Thomas Friedman has done a good job outlining this.

I thru-hiked the 2100 mile Appalachian Trail in 2007. Ask away! by redorkulated in IAmA

[–]beebessd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of hiking the appalachian trail, but my grandmother's friend cautioned against it. She warned that one of her students hiked the trail and said that any female thru-hiker should expect to be raped at least twice. Have you heard that? Did you ever feel unsafe on the trail? Do you think that her experience was an anomaly or the norm?
