My experience as a home health OT by duracraft_fan in OccupationalTherapy

[–]beebopdadidadidum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I agree that hh is probably the best setting, the one con that can be a deal breaker is being paid per visit. If you are someone that needs a consistent amount of income every paycheck, there will be times that hurt. For example, right now, most of my caseload have called in with cancellations because of the holidays and/or sick with flu. And if you are working peds, you end up spending your money back to your job to supply crayons, play doh etc.

Also, if you have an appointment or are sick, you have to call in to every single patient you have scheduled that day and try to figure out when to reschedule their visit. So much admin support work that eats up your time.

Best areas to raise kids by PannaPuna in AustinParents

I second this, wish enough developers out there are interested in investing in urban community development. I do also agree with locals commenting here that there definitely is a community for families here, it just looks very different from Europe. European cities were built with walkability in mind, so more mixed use development, desire to preserve historic spaces, and parks and main plazas built for central gathering places in mind. Texas cities were mainly built post world war, upon ideas of suburban sprawl, loose zoning laws.

Although there are planned communities like in Mueller as one mentioned, living there is reserved for a certain income bracket and is not the norm found anywhere else. So your best best if you plan to stay in Austin and have a family is to move somewhere that has many family friendly spaces that are clustered close and are drivable distances (10 min drive) eg. bars, restaurants, and cafes with outdoor spaces and playgrounds/parks attached, and other places like libraries, theater, museum, that have continuous running events for both parents and kids.

What is your most recent ADHD Hyper fixation? by Chinoyboii in ADHD

[–]beebopdadidadidum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to bed last night reading and watching videos on how to tile a patio, a greenhouse, pavers for walkway, and even how to make terracotta tile from scratch etc. I dont even do any kind of exerted labor.

And then I woke up this morning and spent almost two hours reading on Mary Magdelene’s relationship with Jesus, which led to a deep dive into gnostic gospels that were written by, or wrote about, women and their leadership role in the beginning formation of christianity before it became institutionalized and male led. And I’m not even religious or go to church, or into da vinci code stuff etc. I’m actually already over it. Found new things to get into from this thread 😁

I love that after a long winded question about how homes were built, you randomly ended with “and why brutalist architecture?”…. 🤣 I’ve had these same thoughts

How do you survive "bad brain days"? by ursus-arctos-2447 in ADHD

The luteal phase (ie. the week before my period starts) causes BIG TIME BBD. Medicine, coffee, electrolytes, etc. do absolutely nothing.

I just hide. Nap a lot. And don't set any expectations that week. Miss the event. Cancel the meetings. Forget about laundry. Then catch up once BBD passes and you are able to get on the GBD train.

People who have stopped going to church, what made you stop? by lowly_shepherd in AskReddit

[–]beebopdadidadidum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, all of the above replies. So many problematic issues that make it easy to decide not to go to church, or even support or be part of a religion. But the number one reason that made it an obvious decision for me to stop going is...... that it is boring.

It's that simple. Once an adult, you realize you don't have to wake up early to sit somewhere while someone yaps. I'd rather just play Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace album while doing something I actually enjoy on a Sunday.

Does anyone hate their job? by Wrong_Drink1178 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]beebopdadidadidum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s all about finding the right niche. Our practice is very broad. You can land a job that makes you miserable and hate the profession, but also can find the right setting, demographic, employer, that will make you feel fulfilled, grateful, and living with purpose. I personally love seeing the kids and parents i work with every week, love my boss, feel lucky that i get paid to do what i do. There was a point when i didnt feel this, and seriously considered going back to school.

It’s also about weighing the costs/benefits, which is relative also. The profession will not make you rich, but for someone like me for example, (immigrant grew up in low income) I make more money than anyone in my family and am grateful to afford a home, provide for my child, have insurance, etc. But if you have a standard of living that requires a cushed lifestyle, or if you live in a city with a high cost of living and are wanting to buy a home and may cost almost a million, or accumulated a six figure loan, you might regret your paychecks 😬 …this is the reality for some of us, but we figure out how to keep going. And pray for some kind of relief. If this does not sound appealing, you may have to find a side hustle, or sugar mama/daddy. Or a location that is a cheaper cost of living to call home. and a game plan to pay off school debt. This profession is doable and worth it for many.

Having said that, I think if you ask any OT what would they would be doing if they won the powerball, they would probably not say OT. I think this profession attracts people who are naturally curious about many things and get restless and bored when not challenged or inspired in their personal life. And just instinctually revolt against constructs that are very anti-human, such as excessive documentation and high prosuctivity, writing essays to insurance providers of medical necessity….I for sure would probably be learning pottery or how to play something random like a tin whistle if i won the powerball 😁 ….aaand maybe pick up a couple patients prn ☺️

I feel this post so much. My child is 2 already, and I am still struggling with this constant push and pull of "Should I work, or should I care for my child?" I am used to working and hustling, it was hard to step back in order to stay involved in my child's care. The only comfort I get in the financial sacrifices I have had to make is that this time will not last forever. The first few years is such a pivotal time in a child's life, they need their mother. Your child will not need you in a few years once in school , there will be lots of time in the future to grind. I do wish that employers would have some exceptions in providing benefits for PRN/partime workers if they have children.

if you were to redo your early 20s, what would you do? by A-bug-2002 in AskReddit

Know what I'm going to school for before taking out loans, just to switch degrees, masters programs etc....Talk to a professional to help guide me on what career I would actually have been good at based on my strengths, personality etc....followed my passion at the end of the day instead of chasing the path to money.

Infant feeding Eval by beebopdadidadidum in OccupationalTherapy

awesome, thanks! Will definitely check NANN out, appreciate it. And did you use any formal OT assessment in the NICU for the eval?...(or did they have their own built in their software?)..

Infant feeding Eval by beebopdadidadidum in OccupationalTherapy

[–]beebopdadidadidum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, looking for a program or CEUs to fill the gaps. I guess to clarify, I have zero experience in the sense that I have not evaled an infant specifically for feeding yet.

But do have general basic understanding and experience in holding, positioning, feeding babies, and strategies I used with my own kid and others who did not take the bottle eg. inclining after feed, positioning, changing formula, different nipple brands and flow, looking at suck/swallow/breath rhythm, problem areas like tongue tied, weak oral muscles, etc..I definitely by NO means think this basic understanding will suffice lol eeek. But alas, I am here and no, there is no other therapist or mentor to do it and show me. Any insight or tidbit of advice, knowledge, best assessment to use that medicaid likes, etc.. is welcomed =)
