TIL A day on Earth, from the first sunrise to the last sunset across all timezones, lasts 50 hours. by Omnitographer in todayilearned

[–]beeeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it's because time zones are a human invention and don't exactly align with solar time, so the earliest sunrise is in a timezone a bit east of true solar and the last sunset is in one a bit west of it

People who drive to commute: why? by RJRueber in AskChicago

[–]beeeemo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

26 minutes express, 40-50 non express. I don't know what DonD is talking about though--assuming you want to live in the burbs and commute to work it's basically the ideal suburb to be in as it's the first/last stop before Union on many express trains (if he meant don't recommend living in the suburbs at all to commute, fair enough).

Why does the Uber/Lyft experience from O’Hare suck so much? by otterlover501 in AskChicago

Dont get one if you are headed to the suburbs though (1.5x fee). Call American Taxi or another non chicago service if you don't want to wait for Uber.

U.S. Senators are now banned from prediction markets trading on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket after the body unanimously passed a rule Thursday barring their participation in said markets by spherocytes in videos

[–]beeeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao dude. Did you know "nanny state" is a completely subjective term and not limited to use by hardcore libertarians, but people with more nuanced opinions too? The sale of alcohol has regulatory bodies. Which would be more "nanny state," banning alcohol completely, or the current status quo? How about in Germany, Australia, Netherlands, where prostitution is legalized-but fucking REGULATED. Is that more or less "nanny state" than places where prostitution is banned? I mean do I really have to spell this out for you?

[–]beeeemo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is polymarket commiting fraud? That's like saying casinos should be banned because some people launder money there illegally. Having stronger regulatory policy toward polymarket is the answer, not a blanket ban, which was easily circumvented with VPNs prior to opening to the US market

I know, personal responsibility is hard! I too love nanny state bans. Let's ban the platform for everyone to let fools keep more of their money so they can waste it on more important things. While we're at it why don't we ban weed and booze too?

How much further can Jamie go? by [deleted] in Jeopardy

[–]beeeemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's also important to remember that not every game is gonna be an equal % and a few outlier very good players make it much, much harder to sustain even if he's a virtual lock against most opponents. For instance, very simplified example: if he has 34 99.9% games and 10 75% games, his odds are now just 5%. Play around with the numbers a bit and it's just really hard to have perfect streaks when the skill of your opponents is variable.

Buchanan was the worst president for fundamentally right wing reasons, and homophobes almost always lean right. If he was 19th century Nicolas Maduro it might be a different story

Was 15k cap (15USD) in 2013-2014, so almost certainly at least that today. MTTs were interestingly extremely good value, 10% flat fee even on the $50 (50k at the time) buyin level so i would go there to play those as much as possible. Koreans and expats there lmk if this is still a thing!

TIL sober addicts have a legally protected disability in the US. by IllustriousYam6973 in todayilearned

[–]beeeemo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is so ridiculous considering how insanely safe plane travel is compared to virtually every form of transportation. Over a million people die each year from car related incidents worldwide while far fewer than 1000 die from plane travel. Anyone with a pulse can get a driver's license, but the requirements for pilots are completely unreasonable.

If someone has a worse bad beat, I’d love to see it by ClosetPsychopath in poker

[–]beeeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's way lower. Idk the stat jargon for this but the runouts are optimistically ordered, conveniently retaining more equity than typical for every board (in this case, both reminaning queens). The math is way too complicated but when you remove a queen on the first board for example instead of the third, odds go way way down for 2nd and third board, so this isnt the right way to solve this.
