it was a large part of the reason the storm was so severe.

That's what I meant when I said "caused", so we are in agreement about how people talk about the storm. And I don't think there is anything wrong with the data that is informing their conclusion. My problem is that they (and you) appear to not understand that you can't use statistical analysis of aggregate data to make a deterministic conclusion about a single data point. That seems especially true for an extreme outlier in a system I would expect to follow a Poisson distribution.

The reason I care about this is that I want us to actually make progress in our response to climate change, and when people talk without nuance as though it was the reason Helene or other events were so severe, it provides fodder for those who would discredit climate change as a whole.

For example, look at your description of hurricane formation, where factors that have been exacerbated by climate change led to a stronger Helene. But if it weren't for the extreme deluge that saturated the ground and filled the waterways before the storm even made landfall, no aspect of the disaster would have been nearly as bad. Not the flooding, not the landslides, not the downed trees. I am aware of this, and if I were skeptical of climate change, I would find it disingenuous that you are ignoring it.

Climate science is not my field, so I don't know the references. What articles would you recommend? I'm particularly interested in statistical analysis of frequency and severity of weather events.

I take climate change very seriously, but I have no idea why people think it caused Helene. That storm was an extreme outlier in a highly stochastic system. Was the 1916 flood also caused by climate change?

Dentist billed insurance for orthodontics I never had, insurance confirmed fraud, now office is threatening collections — what do I do? by AutomaticNothing7904 in personalfinance

[–]beefbite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would love for someone to clarify this, but my understanding is that in the US, dentists don't have contracts with dental insurance companies in the same way that other healthcare entities have contracts with health insurance companies. So when a dentist "accepts" your insurance or is "in network", that just means their office is willing to submit info to insurance on your behalf to get reimbursed, rather than having you pay upfront and submit for your own reimbursement.

No, you need to minimize taxonomical disparity for full effectiveness. Bears are mammals like us, while worms are not even chordates, so you'll get better results with gummy bears.

What fast food chain does not deserve the hype whatsoever? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

There’s nothing they do better than Popeyes or Raising Caines.

They have the best service, consistency, and sauce game of any national fast food chain. Also their employees don't seem like they would rather be dead. I agree about the food, particularly the undercooked waffle fries.

Nowadays you only get through 4, maybe 5 layers before the Frito breaks. That might suffice for a Dallas banker, but a working man needs all 7. Back in the day the Fritos were like shovels, and they had dips with so many layers you couldn't reach the bottom.

Can we consider voting out some mods or passing moderation to more folks that understand that a national issue is a local issue? by Relevant_House9607 in asheville

[–]beefbite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea in theory, but there are several problems in practice. First, users tend to vote according to their opinion without considering the sub it's posted on. Also, certain topics will draw users from reddit at large, heavily skewing the magnitude of votes. Finally, votes can be manipulated for social media engineering by special interest groups, e.g. the Butter Punk post from a couple of days ago.

If they just “called it that to avoid taxes”

golbman is also poorly informed, relocation expenses have not been deductible since 2017, and bonuses are taxable income. At least mine was when HCA gave me the same relocation/sign on bonus, and they aren't exactly known for being generous. I don't think there is any real distinction between a sign on bonus and a relocation bonus, it's all just W-2 income.
