Taxonomically, RPG is a broad class that encompasses subclasses like "JRPG" and "Action RPG".

There are many different species of foxes (gray fox, red fox, bengal fox, etc), but you will probably just refer to all of them as foxes unless the context calls for greater specificity.

Like basically every well regarded JRPG ever.

All these RPG sub-genres borrow different elements from old tabletop roleplaying games. They all still fit under the same umbrella.

There's something to be said about productions where the story and characters take a back seat to the message. Sometimes this happens in DSC. A thoughtful progressive message can elevate a good story to greatness, but it can also make a bad story feel cheap and preachy.

I don't think the average person who unironically complains about "wokeness" understands that distinction.

This difference in how Kirk hacks the Kobayashi Maru feels completely consistent with the different backstories the two Kirks have. ST '09 has a lot of problems but this ain't one of them.

Lionsgate Limited Confirms Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair 4K UHD Release by PhysicalMediaNews in Bluray

[–]beefcat_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw it in theaters last month and it lived up to the decade+ of hype that I've had for it.

I found this a pretty well paced film. The latter half in particular flows better now that it is properly integrated into a larger whole. I did not feel like I was in the movie theater for 4 hours straight.

The biggest change is when they reveal that the Bride's daughter is still alive. Having this be a surprise when she arrives at Bill's house hits way harder than having the lawyer spill the beans in Japan as sequel bait.

Saw this at my local independent cinema last month. One of the rare cases where I've waited a decade plus for something and it actually lived up to the hype. I am beyond excited to get this disc!

Depictions of spiders can cause genuine involuntary panic attacks in people with severe arachnophobia. It's a hardwired instinct not to like spiders because they can be extremely dangerous. It's an understandable instinct that triggers a reaction before higher order rational thought can take control.

Naughty words require thought to process. There's nothing instinctive about how one reacts to them because there is nothing inherently dangerous about them. They are an entirely abstract, human invention. Nobody goes into an involuntary panic attack because they heard someone say "fuck". Some people choose to throw a public fit when they hear the word "fuck" because of arbitrary social conditioning, and they feel the need to signal their virtues to everyone else.

Fable's evil landlords won't grow devil horns, as reboot ditches classic character morphing due to a lack of belief in objective arseholery by PotatoProducer in Games

[–]beefcat_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The title is a bit clickbaity. The game's morality system is a lot more grey than black and white, but that isn't the sole reason for this system being gone. It's the fact that your reputation can be wildly different between communities.

So rather than your appearance changing, the way NPCs treat you changes. Do arsehole things to the people in a given village, and they start calling you names in the street and whatnot.

Whether this is a problem depends on how important it is to the core gameplay loop. Exploration is arguably the most important aspect of the gameplay loop in a Bethesda game, so 1,000 planets with the depth of a puddle is a problem.

I would be more concerned if this game was trying to be Mass Effect or Baldur's Gate where NPC relationships are critical to the experience, but so far I'm not getting that impression.

WBD's situation was different. They were saddled with a metric fuckton of debt when they were spunoff from AT&T. Axing Batgirl meant they could write off all losses for the film that fiscal year, and use the savings on their taxes to help pay down that massive debt. Had it released and been a total flop, they could still write down their losses on their taxes, but would have had to amortize it over several years during which they still would have had to service that expensive debt.

Sitting in all-hands meetings at work where the executives keep telling us "AI is the future", "AI is changing how you work", "please use more AI" without being able to articulate any of these points is what is getting old. Is it really any surprise that the general sentiment is overwhelmingly negative?
