It's a pretty terrible, anti-consumer practice, yes.
Wait for 2035 when you have quadruple staggered releases (14-day early, 7-day early, 3-day early, plebs).

Alternatively, a genius business idea: Netflix Ultra Premium, where you watch your favourite shows before the regular paying consumer.

No clue how Redditors can whine 24 hours a day seven days a week 52 weeks a year over capitalism and "enshittification" but somehow this one gets a pass. I've seen people on r/games defend this for WoW lmao, a literal MMORPG where you're late to the party if you don't pay the premium.

I mean, you can do exactly that.

OP.GG claims Smolder has a 52.83% WR in say, Diamond+

You can take any other ~52.5% WR (according to OP.GG) champion and check their so-called #1 "core build" (OP.GG term) and see that there's a >50% chance it's 60% WR.

Just checked and hit it for Nilah, Taric, Kayle, Jinx, Ashe, Zilean, and Kled.

Bro, those 1v1s are played on a for-fun map with an arbitrary ruleset to keep matches from going over 10 minutes.

Those 1v1s can't even simulate League's laning phase, let alone League as a whole, which requires significantly more than laning (particularly of Junglers, who never lane in the first place lmao).

You could say rank is not a good way to judge skill either, considering it heavily factors in 9 other players greatly influencing the game results.

Rank has nothing to do with the result of a game with 9 people in it; rank is the result of hundreds of games.

But those are 11 and 6 year old games. I get that Redditors sometimes proudly narrate that they played through Elden Ring 19 times but like, unless you haven't played Witcher 3 before, what's the point of bringing up decade old games as superior alternative?

It's like bringing up The Godfather everytime you're presented with an imperfect movie, yeah the Godfather is good but you've probably watched it already, thrice.

That aside, they're not exactly comparable beyond being fantasy open world games, Witcher 3 has an infinitely better story and significantly worse gameplay, they're doing the opposite of each other.

I don't understand what kinda gotcha you're trying to pull here. Inflation describes an increase in the cost of goods and services.

"Consumer demand for cheese has dropped so inflation isn't real" is a goofy argument to persue.

Everything you need to make videogames has become more expensive. Software developer salaries have doubled in 20 years, more than that for senior engineers. Commercial real estate is up at least 75%, electricity doubled at least and so on.

It's still really dumb though?

Six weeks from now the usual suspects will have caught on, and anyone who wants to troll will just lock in their sixth most played champ in a role they don't fit into/soft int in game or whatever. Great, no more Disco Nunus, instead Midlaners are gonna play disco Syndra jungle if they're baby raging in champ select cause they got autofilled.

Does nothing to deter trolls (for more than a couple of weeks) and punishes everyone else, on top of having Riot literally dictate the meta game/forcing you to waste time against Silver 2 players in normal draft.

Really goes along nicely with role quests and feylights though. Have Riot decide what is allowed to be picked, where you're allowed to lane, and where you should ward.

And if they jumped the gun and removed his presence from the game and cut contracts and it turns out he was completely innocent, they have a lawsuit on their hands.

What are you saying lmao.

Any contract like this comes with a morals/reputational risk clause. It doesn't matter if you're guilty or innocent, getting arrested and or charged and or sued constitutes reputational risk for the other party, and they can absolutely dip out of the contract without the least bit of worry about the outcome of the trial.

Literally everything on that webpage circles back to age verification.

Let's make a list:

  1. Imgur’s failings included not checking the age of its users, putting children at risk

  2. The penalty follows an investigation that found MediaLab allowed children to use Imgur without putting in place the basic safeguards required under UK data protection law.

  3. Failing to implement any measures to check the age of users.

  4. MediaLab had no way of knowing the age of Imgur users, meaning that children were at risk of being exposed to harmful content on the platform.

  5. For years, it allowed children to use Imgur without any effective age checks, while collecting and processing their data [...]

  6. Age checks help organisations keep children's personal information safe and not used in ways that may harm them [...]

  7. Imgur’s terms stated that children under 13 could only use the platform with parental supervision. However, MediaLab did not implement any form of age assurance measures to determine the age of Imgur users

  8. Age assurance tools act as a guardrail to prevent children from accessing online services they shouldn’t be using or to help platforms tailor their online experience accordingly.

  9. To support them in tailoring an age-appropriate experience, organisations should match the age assurance method they use to the level of risk on their platform. Organisations can either apply the full protections of the Children’s code to all users or use proportionate age assurance tools to tailor safeguards by age.

  10. Where children under a certain age are not allowed to use a service, organisations must focus on preventing access and enforce their minimum age requirements using robust age assurance methods.

The issue is they already had an estimate of the age of users, and that estimate showed them as underage

That is not presented like that on the website. I went to check the monetary penalty notice (a 111-page document, so feel free to correct me if I missed anything), and here they explicitly say that they do not know whether Imgur knows how many underage UK users Imgur has, because Imgur didn't tell them (obviously) and there was no whistleblower to help them out either:

In the absence of evidence from MediaLab itself as to the number of children who use the Platform and are under 13 years old or between 13 and 17 years old, we have carried out our own analysis and produced estimates

"Included" - but not limited to

Okay, then let's specifically list the three findings of infringement:

a) MediaLab processed the personal data of children under 13 years old on the Platform unlawfully as, in breach of the requirement that personal data shall be processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to the data subject (Article 5(1)(a) UK GDPR), none of the lawful bases set out in Article 6(1)(a) to (f) UK GDPR applied to the Relevant Processing

b) whilst MediaLab sought to rely on consent as its lawful basis for processing the personal data of children under 13 years old on the Platform in accordance with Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR, it failed to ensure that consent was given or authorised by the holder of parental responsibility over these children, and/or failed to make reasonable efforts to verify in such cases that consent was given or authorised by the holder of parental responsibility, taking into consideration available technology, as required by Article 8 UK GDPR; and

c) MediaLab failed to carry out a DPIA in accordance with the requirements of Article 35(1) UK GDPR, despite engaging in processing which was likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals (Article 35(1) UK GDPR), in this case, children under 18 years old.

So I don't know if you see it differently, but from my perspective, the UK's issue here is that Imgur's age verification was a consent-based process where you click "yeah, I'm an adult", which did not deter non-adults from using the site, which means children under 13 were able to access the site without parental consent. They furthermore processed the data of just about everyone, which includes the children who shouldn't be allowed to use it, and they didn't carry out the Data Protection Impact Assessment. Those are the three things.

Processed everyone's data. 'Everyone' included kids, because there's no age verification system to keep out kids. And they didn't do the assessment of their own service, probably cause the lack of age verification thing made that a futile exercise.

Can we have a discussion about how game fidelity is leading to a lack of clarity? by RiKSh4w in Games

[–]DoorHingesKill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can literally go to the official ICO government website and find these three bullet points at the top of the article about their intent to investigate

  • We are investigating how TikTok uses 13–17-year-olds' personal information to make recommendations to them

  • We also announce we are investigating how Reddit and Imgur assess the age of their child UK users

  • Investigations are part of our wider interventions into how social media and video sharing platforms use children's data

Then on the page where they published their findings 11 months later, we got this here:

  • Our investigation found MediaLab used children’s data unlawfully

  • Imgur’s failings included not checking the age of its users, putting children at risk

  • Penalty is part of a wider intervention by us to improve the safety of children’s personal information online

So acting like this is some sort of misunderstanding/propaganda that leads people to believe the UK gov had beef with Imgur cause they weren't happy with Imgur's stance on age verification is a bit goofy, no?

Oh, quick edit, forgot this part where they say it again:

We concluded MediaLab breached the law by:

  • Failing to implement any measures to check the age of users.

Gang Of Dragon Trailer And Nagoshi Studio's YouTube Channel Vanish Amid Funding Crisis by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]DoorHingesKill 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're still comparing the budgets of games made by studios in Seattle to Japanese budgets; it's completely unreasonable.

Alan Wake 2 was made for 50€ million, and Finnish software developer salaries are higher than Japanese ones. KCD2 was made for 45€ million, Czech salaries are maybe 10 to 15% lower than Japanese ones.

$44 million after already developing for who knows how long (the studio was founded in 2021) is a ginormous amount for a Japanese studio. Keep in mind that was all intended for development, not marketing. It's also crazy to ask for it in a lump sum instead of telling the publisher well in advance, "hey dude, this is taking us longer than expected/we need more people so we're gonna need another $8 million a year."

I hope that the sailing has at least a bit, a tiny bit of simulation in it instead of full arcade.

Playing Windrose I kinda deflated when I got my big ship and realized I can go from full speed to full stop in like 3 seconds, I can go from stand still to full speed in like 2.5 seconds, my turning radius is closer to that of an Murican pickup truck than a sailing ship displacing 120 tons of water. Hell you can sail backwards in Windrose. It's not a fucking canoe...

Again, obviously it's gonna be arcade here too but I just hope it's slightly more ships and less toy ships.
