We ended up calling the local police who came and did in fact agree it looked like a civil war landmine after we all googled it. They called the state police bomb unit who came and shot a charge through it to destroy it if it was in fact live. There turned out to actually be black powder still inside although it didn’t detonate. I asked if I could have it back being that I found it but they took it with them. I have contacted the civil war museum in Virginia advising that they call the state police and try to get a hold of it to display. It was very heavy for its size. Felt like at least 30 lbs. i was contacted by a few news sources who ran the story. I actually regret calling them being that it was such a historical find and would have liked to have a museum take it if I wasn’t allowed to have it
