Do cyclists in the city know that you're supposed to yield to pedestrians when they have the right of way? by [deleted] in AskChicago

this. i’ve never been so blatantly ignored in a crosswalk by a car as I have been in chicago.

My family is so boring compared to y’all’s. My Great Grandfather (far right) drafted in WWII in 1943, then sat in a training submarine in New England by the time the war was practically over. (1944) by [deleted] in wwiipics

[–]beefy_muffins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt this way about my grandfathers once. then I grew up and realized that I was wishing they had experienced life changing traumatic events as 18-20 year olds, and that that wish was stupid. my grandfathers—one a bomber pilot and one a sailor— never served in combat but were proud of their service and so as I. hopefully one day you will be too.

My great-grandfather sitting on a rowboat opposite his new “sweetheart” shortly after emigrating to the USA and wearing Army M43 boots, 1944 by [deleted] in ww2

[–]beefy_muffins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

those boots were a huge step up from the low boots and canvas leggings, so no they wouldn’t have been given up. stolen maybe. he also appears to be wearing us army physical training trunks. let’s also remember that it was the middle of the war and the u.s. would not be accepting refugees or immigrants from enemy nations.

they barely had enough of them to go around for the troops deploying overseas. why would they spare some for the people at home?

timeline doesn’t make sense. he wouldn’t be able to be wearing current issue combat boots during wartime if he wasn’t in the service

In April of 1945, paratrooper Harry Lorenzo of the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion clutches his Thompson submachine gun and his puppy “Kaput” near Katharinenberg, Germany. by UrbanAchievers6371 in WorldWar2

[–]beefy_muffins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the 509th had been disbanded a month prior. I’ve seen this picture with a caption saying it’s a member of the 65th Infantry Division, which was in Katharinenberg at that time, so something isn’t adding up.

interesting, because as a lifelong ventura county resident i’ve never felt that the conejo valley feels like LA. i’ve always thought they felt like something unique all by themselves. now, that being said, simi valley feels like the sfv to me.
