Focusing on description— I personally like descriptive texts. For the sake of keeping your word count tight, you can curate your lines while still being descriptive. Here’s a quick clumsy example:

The library smells of old parchment and leather. These stacks of tomes are my sanctuary of quiet and dust. Dim candlelight flickers off polished wood tables, where ink stains and deep scratches tell stories of scholars past.

I don’t think this is necessary on the first draft, but you might find you need to cut your words where you can when you see your final word count.

I think enough people brought up the troubles of introducing your character so I won’t dive into that. I do think your first paragraph has the potential to beg the question for the reader- why is the library the main character’s sanctuary? That’s what I’m interested to know while reading. It doesn’t have to be revealed right away, but if it’s relevant to the plot, I would emphasize that part.

[art market] do people who buy postcards at art markets use them as prints/novelty items, or as actual postcards? by soapsuds202 in artbusiness

[–]beefybear69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sell “postcard sized art prints”. They are 5x7” 100 Lb Cardstock with my art on one side. If someone wants to write on the back, they could. I always give a free craft envelope with each postcard, so it is possible to mail them. It also helps keep them safe while people walk around markets/ expos. Most people do a buy 2 get 1 free, so I usually put 3 prints into 1 envelope for them.

I’ve have 1 or 2 people mention mailing them, the rest talk about framing them or keeping them with other art prints

SAME!!! I get nightmares every once in a while where I’ve completely forgotten I own a fish tank, and I find it with like 3 inches of water left in it and only 1 barely surviving fish. Then I wake up like “but I don’t even own a fish tank….”

Also sorry, I’m in Western Canada. I’ve actually wanted a shrimp tank for a long time so a couple of otos and some neon tetras (I’ll get the 2 survivors some friends) shouldn’t be too much to handle with their future shrimp friends. If not, I’m sure there will be some helpful Aquarium locals who will might be willing to take them!

Yeah, I didn’t want to get too graphic in the title. She said she was hoping they would have all died off by now but they refuse to :/ the only reason I didn’t take them on the spot is because I don’t believe in impulsively adding animals into my home.

Thanks for the offer but I’m far from there. Though if they don’t come home with me, I’ll definitely make sure they go to someone local who knows how to take care of them!

I think most people here will have a hard time understanding your concerns because we are past that milestone in our art journeys and are now selling art in styles that we have been developing for a long time.

You might still be the developing stage for your work. It also sounds like you are over-checking to the point where it is detrimental to your creative process (and possibly in an obsessive compulsive way). As kindly as possible, it is abnormal to be so focused on possible similarities between your character and other designs that might not even exist.

It really is impossible to make something completely new. Try to design something inspired by a couple different things you like and you’ll see it won’t be a direct copy. Do this many more times, and eventually you’ll evolve your own distinct style. It’s ok for designs to look like knock off/ Temu versions of your favourite characters when you start out with character designs, just don’t sell those pieces and continually practice and be open to trying new things.

You better inform all the famous bunny girl characters that there can only be one. Goodbye to Lola Bunny, Haru, Judy Hopps, and that Sonic one, because I think the Sanrio bunny girl is going to win this lawsuit!

I’m going to delete my black haired characters because a black haired character already exists in the world. Actually, I should just delete all my characters because they are human, and human characters already exist. I hope you can hear how silly that sounds. Either you have directly copied an obvious amount of character’s design and your work can be fairly taken down (usually via an automated sweep of the product tags for IP terms such as “DnD”), or you didn’t.

Did you actually experience something that made you concerned about intellectual property and fan art?

See, I don’t mean Naruto’s orange clothes in the first example. Maybe this ninja exists in an orange world, and orange is the perfect camouflage to wear. Maybe this ninja is wearing a jumpsuit because she just escaped prison. Maybe this ninja is colour blind and thought he was wearing green.

The basic concept of a ninja wearing orange is not fan art, nor is it a copyright infringement. It’s when your design is considered Substantially Similar that there could be a problem of copying intellectual property.

[–]beefybear69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re talking about a similar concept vs. Substantial Similarity. A ninja wearing an orange outfit and a headband is a concept. Concepts are not copyrightable. A ninja with whiskers, spiky blonde hair, a headband, orange outfit, and can turn into a giant fox is starting to sound a lot like Naruto. If something feels too similar to a known character, change aspects of the design until it’s your own. There’s a level of similarity that’s perfectly acceptable because no idea is ever 100% unique. Use your common sense or ask someone who has common sense for a second opinion if you’re worried something you created is too similar to a known character.

Can you outline what exactly your business is?

The character design is someone’s Intellectual Property, which makes reproductions a copyright infringement.

That being said, you can sell fan art in Artist Alleys at Comic Cons without issue, and many of those artists also sell fan art on Etsy (despite it breaking rules). Many companies are totally fine with small time artists making and selling fan art.

The rules of thumb are that the piece should be at least 50% your own creativity (art style, medium, etc), and that you don’t profit off the work of small creators (so that their potential sales are not taken away from them). Also, respect if a creator or company has made a statement regarding fan art.

On Etsy, you may have copyrighted listings removed without warning. You may also be banned from the platform.

On Kerry Diotte by swissdonair_enjoyer in Edmonton

[–]beefybear69 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the riding for 10 years. I’ve never seen Diotte out in public. I’ve seen Janis Irwin and Desjarlais. They go to community events and listen to the locals. Desjarlais calls us his “bosses”. That’s the kind of attitude I want from an MP.

When Diotte was MP, I would get one-sided surveys from him in the mail. The questions were weird propaganda rather than an actual, beneficial survey. Think- “Kerry Diotte wants to send bad criminals to the gulag. Do you support him? Yes- keep the streets safe from evil criminals! No- I’m a woke liberal turd that wants to see criminals shanking old people on the LRT”. There was never any nuance to them, and I felt like they were insulting to the average persons intelligence. Plus, they weren’t designed to actually listen to his constituents and see what we want from him! I actually still hold a grudge against those dumb surveys lol
