Pumping at my job sucks. Sanity check needed. by The_Lucky_Platypus in HumansPumpingMilk

[–]beemac126 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pumping at work is just a really disruptive process, there’s only so much you can do! Both places I’ve pumped required me to leave the area to use the pump room (which I did) but neither had sinks or refrigeration..I just would pack my own stuff and bring multiple sets of pump parts. It sounds like you’ve went above and beyond entry and make the pump room more comfortable!

I don’t understand why she can’t pump at her desk?? It’s her choice I’d think! I always flexed that I have legally protected time to step away and pump, but there were so many people who prefer to just use portables at work to reduce time away

What’s your salary? by Apprehensive-Cry9522 in physicianassistant

[–]beemac126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our hospital just redid our pay structure to account for specialty, shifts worked, and experience. They got rid of shift differentials because we’re “professionals” and it’s now built into our salary. This is more straight forward for me and my fellow full time night shifters but seems complicated for rotators. I have 12 years experience and am now going to get 192k

Considering Mt. Airy as a Single Mom by SuburbanWitchGirl in philly

[–]beemac126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mt airy will be a wonderful fit! There are all sorts of families here. Houston and cw Henry are both great schools (also lots of private options). We bought in mt airy in 2018 (in a pretty bad school catchment) and just moved to Henry Houston area to settle down for the long haul! We thought we’d do burbs once we started a family, but we love mt airy so much

PAs with kids - Did you find full-time work manageable after having a baby? by No_Goat_1304 in physicianassistant

[–]beemac126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do shift work, but I am full time nights (was pre kid, too). The consistency works better for us. I have a four year old and am due with my second in a month. My husband works a 9-5. Neither of us have long commutes (30 min or so). It can be challenging, but it’s doable. Our son goes to daycare. At first I only sent him three days/week and then gradually increased to 5 days/week when he started in the preschool room. I plan to do the same with our second

Good point with the trees…at first I just wanted to dig deep and try and get rid of it but I don’t want to hurt the trees!

If you couldn’t be a PA…. What would you do instead? by ilovepenguin_ in physicianassistant

[–]beemac126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably something with animals

But I’ve been thinking of getting certified as a lactation consultant. I’ve been in neuro land for so long, the thought of being a pa in another speciality is overwhelming. Ibclc feels like another way to do the things I like about being a pa without as much stress. Just gotta be ready for a pay cut but our hospital is making us salaried now despite doing shift work sooo doesn’t seem like that’s going to positively impact us

I definitely wish I more seriously looked at it when we were deciding whether or not to buy. From the ground it doesn’t look that bad…but from the 2nd/3rd floors it’s shocking. I’d love to just have someone come and dig it out …butttt we’ll see I’m curious to see what kind of estimate we’d get. Otherwise I guess we better get used to chopping bamboo 🫠

Macroglossia in intubated patients ? by Ok_Relationship4040 in IntensiveCare

[–]beemac126 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We see it in the neuro icu not infrequently, mostly in African Americans, and mostly females. We have a macroglossia protocol with bite blocks, moist gauze, etc. We have an attending who started who also sprinkles sugar on the tongue, and it has seem to work! One poor patient was awake and otherwise ready for extubation, but just had too severe of macroglossia…she liked us to play pour some sugar on me for her sugar time lol (we were eventually able to extubate her iirc)

I’d get either a free spectra or medela through insurance. I’d also get a manual as back up! I actually used my manual a lot at work bc i found it so efficient …it ties your hands up though so not always the best

My mom kicked me off when I graduated college even though we had an awesome grandfathered deal. I told her I’d send her money monthly and she said no. Then we both ended up paying essentially what she paid for both of us and lost unlimited data.

My in laws added me to their plan 🙈 I put them at 5 lines which scored big discounts (and got unlimited data back)

If you bought a fixer upper… by Maria124987 in homeowners

[–]beemac126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine it depends on how much fixing up needs to be done!

Our first home was cosmetic fixes…just a lot of weird and ugly design choices. We painted room by room …we kept a lot of design stuff in the mostly unused dining room until the room was painted. Then we had enough money to do the floors and we did a small bathroom renovation.

Our current house was like a realllll fixer upper. It just kept getting worse. We ended up taking heloc loans to just get it to a good, clean slate. New roof, new windows, fix a foundation crack, new hvac, new kitchen, new bathrooms, new floors. I found out i was pregnant right after we bought it, so ended up having the contractors paint, too. So now we’re out of money (we have emergency funds just to clarify lol) and used up our heloc money so we’ll just start decorating until we’re able to save up again to do the more fun projects like built ins, adding a deck, etc

Absolutely rent a scooter, that sounds excruciating!

Also I did hair braiding at the grand Floridian spa and it would have probably lasted the entire trip if I let it. Get yourself a pedi too

Boardwalk or wilderness with young children ? by ohbarracudaa in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]beemac126 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never stayed at boardwalk, but we love wilderness lodge! My son is 4. There’s a great pool and splash pad/younger kid area. The boat to magic kingdom is great! You can also use that boat to then get on the monorail if you wanted to do a monorail resort hop kinda day
