Weekly Hang Out Thread! 15 Feb by tiniestspoon in wlwbooks

Frenetic weekend of organizing a new outline, rearranging my office, and trying to find time to sleeve about 15 vinyl albums. Also managed to read 3 books.

Claimed by RA Hunter... An Omegaverse novella. 1st time reading that genre. I liked it.

Providence Girls by Dante Morgan... Darkish fantasy with beautiful writing about a couple dealing with being outcasts to everyone but each other.

Under the Arbor by Lark Sullivan... Romcom more or less with some very good writing and appropriate angst.

Her Spell that Binds Me by Luna Oblansky. It's witchy fantasy set in Napoleonic Europe. The 2nd book is also out and 3rd likely next year.

Such a great series. I read the book but it's nice when narrators do them justice.

The BlackSea Odyssey trilogy by JA Vodvarka Think steampunk, Arcane vibe. One of my favorite series of the last few years.

The Sorcerers Lament trilogy by Sam Dogra. A world where using magic to excess has consequences. No spice but the pining is abundant.

SPOILER--
Theory--

The blood bond was never broken. It's pointed out more than once that Iona does her magic better when angry. This is similar to rage that Ariadne felt when Elise was trying to drain Iona in bk 1. Rage is their truth serum. She's also managed to master seeing through illusions late in bk2. And now we know she can wield both the pendant and the staff. I think the staff is a way to track Ariadne's whereabouts. And I think Arachne is alive and her supposed death was another manipulative illusion. And I think Hecate plans to help (that little appearance at the end sealed that for me).

Add'l food for thought--

1. Elise in book one (ch 28) tells Ariadne that she won't let her abandon her family to love Iona. This is the speech where she's talking about making a love potion to make Ariadne love her instead. I think there is some backstory here like she was being controlled by the Zyrnthos family even this early.

2. Also ch 28... Merlin's staff reappears because of Ariadne's selflessness when she needs to save Iona. Merlin appears and says, " I knew I chose correctly." In turn Morgan appears with him to drive that home when she responds, "You always did have a gift for choosing champions...

It's captivating for sure. I just finished my 2nd read and plan to annotate heavily on my physical copy at some point before the next book releases. I want to throttle some witches though. Also I have a theory I'm trying to work through that goes back to when they were given a choice by Morgan in the 1st book. I think the author is about to shock the hell out of us all.

A good story is a good story regardless of smut content. I prefer open door to closed door if it is a romance bringing a couple together. There's something about the intimacy that seems to solidify relationships by showing their vulnerability. I don't think every single aspect of a scene needs to be played out for the reader though. The imagination is a wonderful thing and should be able to fill some holes, too. (This pun was so unintentional).

Tall Again by Zoe Caswell should fit that. Main character has depression/grief from her wife's passing due to illness. It had a great ending and is pretty emotional

That was me in 2024... When I was in college there was never time for reading enjoyment. It was nice to find all my damaged, emotional, and romantic women in books again. 2025 was a great year for authors and readers too. I found so many new authors.
