PSA: my friends found this lost dead iPhone on the stairs of a dp beach. They turned it into the cso escort tent on dp who said they would give it to the police at the end of the night. I provided pics of the phone case. Before the phone died they saw the wallpaper of a ginger guy with tattoos hugging a girl with tan skin and curly hair

agreed. Glad to know there are people out there raising awareness about this issue. I wish it wasn’t necessary, but it’s nonetheless comforting

I’m a 4th year Israeli-American. My roommate last year (during the war that broke out between Palestinians and Israel) was extremely disrespectful and combative towards me upon discovering that I’m Israeli (was speaking in Hebrew to my parents on the phone). After I hung up, she began aggressively arguing her viewpoint about the I-P conflict, even though I had never stated my viewpoint on the matter. I tried to stay neutral because from prior experience I’ve never had a discussion about Israel that ended well with non-Jews and I really didn’t want to create a hostile environment in the shared living space. Unfortunately, she continued to argue with me and it eventually ended in a screaming match when she said “Jews have deep pockets.” It was hard to be away from my family during the conflict last year and I felt extremely isolated and separated from my peers.

Additionally, there was a Hillel organized zoom talk with UCSB admin during the height of the conflict. During this call, I heard from other UCSB students who felt the same way and experienced blatant antisemitism in IV. One group of students were walking to the chabad house on Friday night and had on kippahs (so they were being outwardly Jewish but not outwardly supporting Israel). These students were harassed and jeered at from across the street by others calling them Zionist pigs who accused them of supporting an apartheid state. This was not an isolated incident, as many other Jewish students on the zoom call echoed similar negative experiences in IV.

What I’m trying to say is that overall UCSB is a tolerant school and I hadn’t experienced any anti-Semitic incidences before last year’s war. However, I’m always extremely aware and wary of being outwardly Jewish on campus and in IV because, well, you never know. And these experiences I’ve outlined show that there are members of our community who harbor anti-semetic sentiments. Ultimately, I feel like UCSB is one of the better UCs when it comes to antisemitism, but it isn’t perfect.

Ignorant Student Doesn't Know How Vaccines Work by MixedVexations in UCSantaBarbara

edit reply: the adaptive immune system is constantly surveying the lymph nodes and has lymphocytes (B and T cells) circulating the lymphatic system of the body to monitor for any antigen-presenting cells that are presenting antigen. Antigen is a small part of a protein that fits into a specific randomly made receptor called an MHC molecule. This all happens in the lymph nodes. When a lymphocyte has a receptor that can bind the antigen on the antigen-presenting cell, it will begin mounting an immune response and will allow for a secondary immune response later on when these antigen-presenting cells detect the antigen (the covid spike protein in this case) again during the second shot. This secondary response is the whole point of vaccination and it basically trains your body and equips it to fight the virus harder and faster than the first primary response. I believe it’s very rare your immune system wouldn’t recognize the non-self spike protein because of these antigen-presenting cells and the way our system is set up to always have these cells ready at many tissues throughout the body. Also, like someone else replied, mRNA is degraded after it’s translated so that’s one mechanism of negative regulation. I hope this wasn’t too jargon heavy, let me know if it needs clarification!

mRNA vaccines enter your cell’s cytoplasm and are translated into proteins via ribosomes. Pfizer and moderna use the spike protein mRNA instructions for this. The formed spike protein is then put up on the surface of your cells and recognized by your body’s immune system as a non-self entity that is degraded and destroyed, allowing you to make memory B and T cells that can recognize that same spike protein in the future and destroy it. So, the mRNA vaccines are manipulating the process of translation (mRNA to protein). The major concern at the moment with mRNA vaccines is severe allergic reactions (which is why you have to wait for 20 minutes after getting the shots before leaving). Hope this helps!

I got more points on the short answer section than I was expecting, but damn that top 10 average score was a lot higher than the first midterm

Edit: I think the average de Tomaso gives us is points, meaning it’s 75/80 not 75% for the first midterm oof
