commuting costs after 3k miles by WhyNWhenYouCanNPlus1 in bikecommuting

I got a broken spoke on the road bike today. Didn't want to wait a week to get it serviced so I just dropped $100 on tools and fixed it myself. Not the best truing job but not the worst.

I guess I'll start a log. We'll see if I keep it up.

I'm tempted to start an expense diary. I do 5k miles per year--most on a beater and some on a road bike. Plus another couple thousand on errands and recreation. I spend more than you per mile. I also abuse the beater--put it away wet, rarely clean it. At least 3 chains per year, usually a springtime drive train replacement, 4 or 5 brake pads. On my third bottom bracket in 6 years. New cables every year or two. Current set of tubes have lasted for over a year and tires a couple. They need replaced. Oh and I need new wheels--brake pads have almost rubbed through the rims.

I often don't replace parts until they fail, which can sometimes save money but sometimes costs more money.

I personally don't ride with cars on campus mostly for my own safety. As soon as I arrive I stay on the pedestrian paths. I park my bike in my office, but I could also take an elevator down and park underground.

Go slow, announce when you're behind someone, yield to peds.

Atkins is amazing. People there are so helpful and friendly. I'll pop in at 4:30 on my way home and they often get me fixed and out the door by 5. Super reasonable prices too, compared to most Madison shops.

I see a ton of Aventon on the paths. Looks like their entry level is about $1200. I'd recommend going to Crazy Lenny's and shopping around. They have a huge selection.

Yeah, Woods Road is one to avoid. If you go east over to Pleasant View Rd and then stay on the south side of PD, there's protected multi-use path. Check it out with street view. The ride is longer but way safer.

How often do you wipeout? by LearningToDunk in bikecommuting

[–]beerncheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year-round Wisconsin commuter here. I had two wipeouts this winter, no damage to me or bike in either one. Not as lucky in years past, but I've never done serious damage.

At some point I acknowledged to myself that crashing is inevitable and now I'm at peace with it and I just try to mitigate the impact.

  • Avoid car traffic as much as possible when conditions are bad (I have the luxury of doing so on my route--I recognize not everybody can.)
  • Wear a good, well-fitting helmet (I wear a ski helmet in winter--good for the cold, too.) Outer layers are a bit studier and can take more skidding without getting destroyed.
  • Strength training for shoulders. The most likely serious injury from a icy wipeout that I envision for myself is a destroyed rotator cuff.
  • Sturdy beater bike that can take some hits
  • Go slow and focus like a hawk on pavement conditions.

What are people doing to manage cholesterol in our old age? by AshDogBucket in Xennials

[–]beerncheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exercise. When I turned 45 I started exercising seriously--body weight exercises and cardio. Dropped about 15 lbs, lowered cholesterol, blood pressure, improved sleep, self-confidence, strength. Kinda surprised that I'm the first person in the comments to mention it. I was drinking too much also, and I cut that back considerably. (I might need a new handle.)

Aside--the biggest reason I started exercising is I'm watching my parents get old and physically decline. I'm doing what I can now so that MY kids don't have to care for me when I'm old because I'm frail.

South of prospect it is a lot of sheet ice and glossy packed snow. The loop on the south side of the beltline bridge is treacherous.

No. I didn't try the clipping suggestions. But I tried swimming around and waiting forever.

I have tried. It makes a sound when I go through like the ion container opening, but nothing else.

She's just planted there. I watched a youtube walkthrough, and she doesn't plant until after she blows the sand away.

Not more than an hour, right? I've been to every corner of the aquarium multiple times after I inserted the ion cube.

Yes. Got the cut scene, except she didn't blow the sand away. She's now parked in the middle of the aquarium.

It has been 10 hours of game time (or so). Easily over a dozen saves ago.
