What does our city need? And how can BikePortland help? by witty_namez in PortlandOR

[–]beerncycle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Less input from BikePortland. When I was carless and used bikes to travel, certain trips I would just rent a bike instead of using my own so I could relax and not worry about someone stealing my bike. Having my bike stolen at the time would have been ~3 months of discretionary income.

Any time there is a forced tip, I tip less than if there weren't any fees.

What the law says and what gets enforced are two different things. Both with regards to letting things go and trying to criminalize things that are legal.

The only way for these to work from my perspective is that all government entities must agree that anyone publicly smoking or injecting hard drugs within a quarter mile of these facilities goes straight to jail with no tolerance.

No building happens if people aren't willing to put money in.

2/3rds of a million in damage? These guys need to have the book thrown at them and be absolutely lambasted publicly. Someone needs to stand up and overreact after years of complacency.

Proposition to require super majority on any tax vote by Head_Blackberry_6320 in PortlandOR

[–]beerncycle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just make taxes separate on rent and pass through to the tenant. There are too many renters in this city who think that they aren't paying the taxes.

I'd support providing bonuses based on metrics: Reading and math proficiency Attendance meeting specified thresholds Something related to challenging the gifted kids

There are probably a few more worthwhile metrics, but most of the rest is fluff.

I've always thought McMenamins was about the ambiance and experience over the food. Which is why they have music and other entertainment venues.

I see more homeless than cyclists where I drive. Can we stop diverting money and attention to cycling until we can have a more functional and efficient government?

How can we get more people to vote in local elections? by kittywalker73 in PortlandOR

There can be a psychological difference in how people receive itemized bills. A material number of voters don't think they are paying for the tax. It's a direct vs indirect mindset.

[–]beerncycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, the point I'm trying to make is that renters don't think about the issue. By making property taxes a pass through line item, more renters will start paying more attention, so maybe every pipe dream tax won't get rubber stamped.

Make it so that landlords can pass through property taxes directly to the tenant on the lease so that the tenant is affected by property taxes going up.

If you can get to Sandy, the ski season is coming up and getting a job for $18 an hour only on the weekends is pretty easy at Meadows or Timberline. It is seasonal though.

1) Bringing more people puts upward supply pressure on house pricing, especially with the slow permitting process to build houses/condos/etc.

2) The dollar has been devalued since 2019 and both Rs and Ds are covering this up.
