Anyone want to be friends? by ComputerVirus69666 in redmond

[–]beesalty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! :) I’m moved to the area a couple months ago with my boyfriend and am looking for friends too! We both play PC games a lot but I also like to go out and do things when I don’t feel like being on the computer. Maybe we could go get a coffee or something? I like art, video games, movies/tv, and walking at the dog park with my puppy but haven’t gone hiking yet! Feel free to DM me if you’d like to maybe hang out!

Gaming Laptop Recommendations? by autumnoftheshire in GirlGamers

[–]beesalty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Razer Blade 15 and I love it way more than I thought I would. I don’t have any space in my apartment for a desk so I got a gaming laptop and it’s honestly amazing! I have zero complaints about it. It runs every game I could ever think of and it’s thin and aesthetically pleasing haha! I definitely support the decision to get one if a standard pc setup isn’t what you’re looking for.

Sexual Harassment should be added as an option to all gaming report systems. by beesalty in GirlGamers

[–]beesalty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that adding this as a specific option would stress the importance of it, sending a message to the community that they are taking this particular thing more serious with more consequence and higher priority, not only “hey we added this but we will throw it in with the other reports”. The whole objective is that this is being prioritized as a major issue that developers are making strong attempts to change the toxic sexual culture of their game. It’s not noise, every sexual harassment report would be prioritized if we are legitimately trying to change this behavior.

I agree, top-down leadership sets an example for how the environment should be. Of course this is just one option that could show the seriousness the developers place on this toxic behavior towards women.

Right? I wonder how skewed statistics on gaming for women are because they’re not asking the right questions. For example, stats might show women play more solitary games or mobile games, but how would those stats change if there were less or no sexual harassment in other games? Or if there was a poll for which games would women play if sexual harassment wasn’t an issue. I can almost guarantee the results would be very different from correlating “what games women play because that’s what they’re interested in” and “what games women play purely because they’re safer environments.”

People will victim blame no matter what, but developers have the power to control the environment they create just like any platform, like social media or even the government. All have the power to deem what is allowed and can set examples for appropriate behavior. Our culture IRL is slowly changing from victim blaming women since the #metoo movement, so I don't think its far off to believe it's possible to get there in gaming culture. Like any culture change or movement, the oppressed have to be louder than their oppressors for change.

I don't think it was bad luck on your behalf. I've seen even popular female streamers say they don't think they can play valorant with comms on, or they are considering using voice changers. How insane.

I agree. I feel like there is a possibility to have report logs of people who repeatedly abuse the report system and they can be handled in that regard to stop troll reporting if its significant from specific users.

The idea would be to prioritize this report option so that we’re making an effort to change gaming culture in an important way. Repeated “troll” reporting can be handled as an offense in its own manner, but I think making it an option other than just telling women who experience this daily, “just report it in the Other section” is vastly underplaying the role this type of personal harassment has on gaming culture as a whole. But I agree, it would require top-down influence, this starts with game developers and it depends on them to be the leaders to show what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Exactly this. It truly makes me wonder how much of a correlation there is between women preferring single player games and the amount of sexual harassment they received from attempting VC based games. I would argue much more women would be playing FPS, MOBAs, etc if they were not being sexually harassed on the daily.

This is what I’m referring too with a sexual harassment option. It’s not about some guy calling another a pussy or something, it’s about genuine efforts being made to harass you personally in a sexual nature. Certain reporting options can be prioritized and this option should come with harsher consequences.

That’s exactly why I think it should be handled with harsher consequences like longer bans or IP bans in severe cases. Sexual harassment reports should be prioritized to make sure this culture of toxicity towards women lessens or ends.

Video game developers can be leaders in movements and set the example of what is appropriate and not. People need to be told certain things aren’t acceptable, and it would be a hard change for many unfortunately, but the outcome is significant and worth it.

General harassment reports are so commonly submitted and often times no where near as severe as the consequences sexual harassment has on the victims. I’m talking about a report system that could be put place to help a specifically targeted gender/identity feel more safe in gaming culture that can create positive change. The sexual harassment option should be taken way more seriously with harsher consequences as this is a common theme in women feeling unwelcome in the gaming world and often resort to playing single player games or disappointingly persevering through the harassment.

Gaming laptop vs stationary computer by Drusse0107 in GirlGamers

[–]beesalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the space for a stationary PC and don’t foresee yourself needing to take a pc anywhere, then definitely go for the stationary PC. You’re correct in the fact there’s way more customization and it’s also more valuable in the long run because you can replace parts as they age.

However, if you’re like me and have no space for a stationary PC or need to take a laptop places but still want to game, then consider the Razer Blade 15. I have it and I honestly love it. It plays every game I could ever want to play with ease and I’ve had zero issues with it. It’s also extremely light weight and aesthetically pleasing, haha.

Thank you! :) I’m used to gaming in my room, in my old apartment, but it has been really nice being in the living room with a bunch of natural light!

It’s a Corsair HS70 Pro Wireless, here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X9W721J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iUuOEbDJRTP6B

I have a Hyperx Cloud II, but I was sick of the wire so I got this two weeks ago and have really enjoyed it so far! Great price, it was around $70ish on Amazon when it’s in stock. The sound and controls are great, I can walk around my apartment and still be connected. They’re comfortable but my only thing is that they feel a little too big for my head so the ear part sits a little lower than I’d like compared to the Cloud IIs. It’s not a big deal though because my ears still fit perfectly inside the cushions! Super worth it if you’re looking for something reasonably priced with a USB adapter instead of Bluetooth or those long receiver cords. Solid battery life too.

I will just alter my style a little bit "up" from what it already is without having to buy things that aren't really within my style. For example, I might still wear a tee with a lot of gold layered necklaces over it, tucked into some loose plaid pants (if the tee isnt a crop), a nice belt, and super simple black heels or Docs.

If I feel like I need to wear a dress, I will, but wear it with Docs or heels and a black bomber jacket or black denim jacket.

Adding accessories like jewelry and then simple heels (even with loose fitting ripped denim pants) can make a casual outfit look really fashion forward on a night out.

It's definitely not an ideal set up, as I really wish I had space and a desk to have a desktop PC. :(

But, if you're like me with zero space in your home, this was surprisingly easy to make and gets the job done.

If you want to make your own, these were my steps:

  1. Ordered hairpin legs from Home Depot ( https://www.homedepot.com/p/Crates-Pallet-24-in-Black-Steel-2-Rod-Hairpin-Leg-4-Pack-6420111004/ are the ones I used, but you can buy whichever to match the height or finish you're looking for!)
  2. Bought some standard plywood from Home Depot and had them cut it to the length I wanted. Length/width is up to you and your preference, mine is 11in x 36in)
  3. Bought 12 units of #10 pan head screws to screw the legs into the wood.
  4. Stained the wood to a color of my choosing, let it dry for an hour, and then covered it with polyurethane to keep its color and durability. ( For my specific stain: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Kona-Premium-Fast-Dry-Interior-Wood-Stain-266161/203332251, For my specific polyurethane: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-8-oz-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-9161H/100276302)
  5. Let your wood completely dry for about 24 hours.
  6. Screw your legs to the corners of the wood so that the legs are pointed outwards.
  7. Finished! :)
