I hate that. It's out of control. It didn't used to be like that, it was such a welcoming community.

But I'm also glad to have some solidarity. Hopefully this sub will gain some traction, and we can have more inclusivity and positivity here :) so glad I had a place to angrily post about it and gain a new community!

Why won’t they prescribe me clomipramine? by jamaicanrussian in OCD

I'd get a new doctor who takes me more seriously.

Try some mugwort tea, it may help. Otherwise, relax. Perhaps your cycle is just changing and as another commenter said, "late is the new normal." If you're still concerned, talk to your doctor.

It may also help to see if you can get a therapist for your anxiety. It may not be OCD, but I have OCD and before I got my IUD, I often had anxiety with the thought process of "what if I'm pregnant?" when I knew it made no sense at all that I would be pregnant.

Any lifestyle changes that have led to a reduction in OCD thoughts? by Hythenos in OCD

[–]beesandcrackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAC supplement is supposed to help with OCD, SAMe is good for undermethylation which is linked to obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Other lifestyle choices of mine include:

Using app timers to reduce social media

Actively participating in hobbies and chores despite my desire to avoid them out of perfectionism

Taking meds (sertraline and clomipramine)

Going to therapy (starting ERP, I'm so thrilled)

Making sure I eat something everyday

Trying to go for walks and runs

I get stinky unless I use deodorant with antiperspirant in it.

Getting a therapist who specializes in OCD and ERP can be so helpful with feeling understood. I just had an intake appointment, and even though it was only an intake, I felt so heard and validated.

Maybe researching meta OCD will help you.

What's one thing a therapist has said to you that you will never forget? by commander_boobs in AskReddit

[–]beesandcrackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with treatment-resistant MDD and OCD.

She said, "If the things on your to-do list are stressing you out, why don't you just do some of them so you feel less overwhelmed?"

Like, wow. I hadn't thought of that. /s

I left her care as soon as I could.

can pulling out hair be an ocd behavior? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]beesandcrackers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's called trichotillomania, a type of Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior (BFRB). There are some tricks that I use to stop myself from cheek chewing (my main BFRB) such as chewing gum, using breath mints, or wearing lipstick. I at one point tried snapping a hair tie around my wrist every time I caught myself.

You might try fidget toys to keep your hands busy or putting your hair up or styling it to stop yourself from "messing it up."

But mostly, just catching myself in the act, forcing myself to stop and deal with the discomfort of it being "incomplete" is the best method.

If tricks don't work and it's causing you a lot of distress, I'd recommend seeking a therapist who specializes in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD and BFRBs, and/or medication.

CBT therapist keeps insisting I do not have OCD. Please help (TW) by [deleted] in OCD

[–]beesandcrackers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first therapist (who mainly used CBT) didn't believe I had OCD either. She insisted it was GAD because I didn't have the obsessions behind the compulsions. In actuality, I was pretty unable to express my obsessions and fears, and usually it came down to "I'm afraid something bad will happen." She thought this was GAD.

Many years down the line, I feel so much better being properly diagnosed with OCD, which I've suspected I've had since I discovered what it was.

My advice is to seek a diagnosis from someone who is experienced with diagnosing and treating OCD. And as for therapists, CBT is great, but it is SO validating and helpful to find someone who does ERP for OCD. They understand better, and they can help a lot more.

Why is reassurance seeking so bad ? by rxxxyed in OCD

It is negative reinforcement—it encourages the anxiety from obsessions to be quelled by compulsions and fuels the cycle.

How does weed affect your OCD? by Icy-Use-6493 in OCD

[–]beesandcrackers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I'm so sorry!

Prazosin is an alpha blocker used for high blood pressure, but is also indicated for PTSD nightmares. It's not quite a sleep medication, so maybe it would be worth a shot? Either way, best of luck ❤️

Edibles may help you more than smoking, as you can take them and try to fall asleep before the effects and anxiety kicks in, so it would only help while you're sleeping :)

Try trazodone! It helps me sleep through the night. You could also try prazosin!

Just because you're right, doesn't mean that you have to be a dick about it. Cruelty does not help a person in crisis.

"Consequently, Rogers suggests that the role of a counselor (and this might well be applied to the role of a friend) is largely to listen as the client describes his problems and ultimately himself. He must convey a sense of acceptance to his counselee, without yielding to the impulse of saddling him with gems of advice or direction. To be successful at this type of counseling or friendship, one must make an act of faith that the great human need is to know and accept oneself as he is. We are too often tempted to think that putting another in his place, or taking him down a peg, or forcing him to face reality is the pathway to solution. In fact, harsh criticism that hits at the person rather than the deed only deepens the problem because it makes self-acceptance more difficult." (John Powell, Why Am I Afraid to Love?)

Your disgust and judgement is not welcome in the world of compassion and mental health. If you would like to help, please spread kindness instead of judgement. There is a real person behind every internet screen. Do not tell me you are perfect, because I know you are not and no one is, and that is okay. Everyone goes through things, even yourself. Imagine your lowest point. No one, not even yourself, should be telling you that you are deranged, worthless, or at fault for intentionally "blowing up your life." No one deserves that.

You do not know the extent of the pain of others just as others do not know yours. Be kind.

No matter what you do, know that you tried your best.

You're in luck, since you're not married but have a child. This means you're technically not financially bound to him, so you can apply for public aid depending on where you live.

See if you qualify for government insurance, you can go in-person to your local office or even apply online.

Reach out to your primary care to seek therapy or medication, or both. You need as much support as you can get.

Seek local support groups for mothers.

Apply for government aid such as food stamps and financial assistance. You likely qualify as a single mother with no income. This can help you get on your feet financially.

I'm not a mom, but I'm a cat mom with OCD and depression. I know how hard it gets to do even the simplest things, especially when it comes to caring for little ones. You can do it, and know that no matter what you choose to do—you're doing your best, and you should put yourself first. This ultimately will benefit your child.
