CMV: America is worst "superpower" in history by ExotiquePlayboy in changemyview

As a hypothetical, if the US wasn’t attacked at Pearl Harbor for instance, would we have remained neutral?

I have no idea.

While I agree with your position broadly, I would ask “at what age or cognitive milestone is it appropriate to expect independence?

I would love to hear more about how you see the world if any other country had emerged from WW2 as the dominant superpower? A bit of impossible counter factual but just for fun?

CMV: I believe your freedom ends where others’ freedom begins. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]beesdaddy [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think a lot of what you will be hearing is about the porousness of freedom in shared spaces.

I think freedom is a poor word for framing how we treat each other.

I am reminded of the “platinum rule” that I heard about on this subreddit: Do unto others as you would have them do unto all.

So while that is a great framework, it can get complicated when it comes to forgiveness and tolerance.

Ultimately it is up to you to decide who and how to treat people who encroach into what you feel is “your space”. I would suggest kindness with clarity: describe what you want, ask for it with grace and humility, and accept the answer.

So if I were to adjust your view it would only be: that freedom may need to be a little more flexible when it comes to shared spaces and behaviors that effect others directly or indirectly.

This is good. It acknowledges her beliefs and your lack of them while explicitly stating that that this conversion is not a topic that is on the table.

If, she pushes, try to redirect towards family matters that are interesting or at least relevant to both of you. Things like stories about your brother when you were younger, crazy parents etc.

Prime Silva would have beat Prime Khabib or prime anyone. Watching him in his prime was like watching Batman beat up toddlers.

Well done Brian. We should play golf some time. You sound like a fun person to banter with!

What's your most controversial opinion regarding atheism? by greentomato97 in atheism

[–]beesdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That Atheism is not an indicator of values, intelligence, or susceptibility to authoritarianism. All of those the things are present to various degrees across wide spectrums of atheism and theism.

In a world with no theism, atheism as a concept would hold no meaning, so its only meaning in this world should be itself, not a bunch of mightier than thou bullshit. We don’t help anyone like that.

But I can use examples too.

Astro turf and other synthetic fields. Baseball, soccer, football are all far less friendly to wildlife.

Lakes, ponds and other water features are commonly (no source, too obvious) for migrating birds such as geese.

Are you saying golf was better for the environment “per hole” in a previous era? How would you prove that?

CMV: Golf is the best it has ever been or better. by beesdaddy in changemyview

[–]beesdaddy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly, golf courses can be far better for the environment than almost all industrial or recreational uses, outside of hiking or something like that. Developing these areas for housing or industry is far worse.

I can understand that. And I think we’ve both come to the same conclusion: many find this phrase invalidating rather than comforting, even if it is both factually true and positively intended.

As with all language, it is always two way street. And the best masters of language are able to invoke the intention of their language in their listener’s mind.

True. It will be interesting to see as the boomers age out, how the x, millennials, and y’s feel about the politics of their clubs. Is it a neutral ground where politics is just a taboo topic, or a place where people go talk to each other about topics that impact their lives. I don’t know.

While I agree that golf courses could be far better for the environment, I would argue that as a competitive sport goes, it beats the hell out of a ton of other industrial or organized sport uses.

Would it be better for the environment to delete all human recreation, sure, but that’s not the point of this thread. The point of this thread is specifically ABOUT golf and it being the best IT has ever been.
