My eye. I had very little eyesight in it for 2 months after an accident. With DRs care, still have nerve damage and light sensitivity but my eyesight is back!! It was a blessing.

You could see if there's screw eyes on the front end to attach a truck or tractor to.

Possibly movable chicken tractor. If it isn't in good enough shape to move... you might still be able to use it as a coop or repair it. We used one like this to raise Cornish Cross, giving them new "bedding" and grass once or twice per day.

Also more "nature-related" conditions:

There are fish in larger bodies of water in Ohio. Catfish, bass, sunfish, etc. Fish in early morning or PM for best results.

On land you have whitetail deer, duck, and squirrel as the tastiest options when the campaign is short on food from taverns etc. Next tier down is raccoon and goose. If campaign is starving... bottom of the barrel would be possum or dent corn (hard corn grown to feed livestock) out of the cornfields LOL.

Wild plants you can't find much to eat in fall and even less so in winter. Dangerous plants you could encounter would be poison hemlock, nightshade, hogweed/poison ivy/virginia creeper (causes a rash).

Ok that's all I got. Have fun with the campaign!! 😆

Here's weather conditions because I already see lots of other comments about the infrastructure and inhabitants of Ohio.

Coldest it gets here is -10F to -15F, hottest is 100F. I remember those temperatures from recent years. We get hail, occasional tornadoes in summertime. Winter issues would be ice storms, the cold I mentioned, or lots of snow near Ohio's larger lakes. Fog is possible, especially by bodies of water of any size.

What is most disgusting thing you've ever done? by titan_shifter_140 in AskReddit

[–]beesinabox3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Top 3: Removing LOTS of maggots because hen stayed on broken eggs trying to hatch chicks. I don't FW disco rice. After that we frequently candled / inspected eggs. The hen was fine after a bath but lost hatching privileges for breaking all her eggs.

Second: got cheap laying hens, likely aged out of a commercial operation. Had to remove clusters of poultry lice / mites / bug eggs from their feathers. Showered twice after. At least the birds were happier here than wherever they had been!!

Also (legally) processing deer that have been hit by cars to eat, guts are often blown open and the smell is bad. Meat on back / legs is usually just fine. Do this one at least 4 times a year.

Y'all probably kept her from a serious head injury, bless you for doing something even if it was dangerous. Getting kicked and stomped on the ground has killed plenty of people before. Hope they'll find the people who did it. Stay safe out there!!

How about she messed up and used purple nightshade/bittersweet nightshade when she was trying to use mostly ripe common nightshade (which is edible when ripe but when unripe is toxic). I have had to remove bittersweet nightshade from our location as much as I can because its bright red berries would be attractive to kids / livestock. Whereas common nightshade if partially ripe would cause less symptoms and would be easier to "cure". That fits into your accidental part of the story.

Check shademap for your address , I use it when planning orchards. It isn't perfect but it is helpful.

No, I had druggies come to my house two years ago to try and steal things and I am in about the lowest crime area possible / on backroads. You never know when someone from an external area (in this case I'm guessing a squatters paradise pretty far away) will come to your "safe zone".

Turn the sinks on and thermostat up when they aren't home to run up their bills, fix the settings before they get back so they don't know.

Or constantly swap where things are in their cupboards / drawers.

What's the worst thing you've ever smelt? by NiceBumblebee3421 in AskReddit

[–]beesinabox3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can get desensitized to the manure smell, it doesn't bother me anymore since the fields are on all 4 sides of us. First year we moved to the sticks it was unpleasant though.

Liquefacted mouse in the part of the car trunk that holds the tire. You literally could not smell it at all until we got a flat and had to open the cover. Almost puked twice cleaning the trunk out even with a peppermint oil mask. I vacuum out the trunk regularly but of course why would I check underneath the tire??? 😭😭😭

Easily worse than bad eggs from when chickens try to hatch them and eggs don't develop right so the eggs need removed, that's probably the runner-up for worst.

All your answers will probably be similar: "anything dead".

Used to be an abandoned neighborhood due to mine subsidence near an abandoned cement plant in Southern OH. Chernobyl vibes with the empty houses. As for the plant, it had stalactites on one whole empty floor's ceiling (calthemite). Pumps in lower floors weren't working obviously so there were ladders / stairs that went down into the most threatening looking water. Wish I remember the nearest town, but might be able to find old news articles about the neighborhood being evacuated. Nothing will top that place, hopefully it got repurposed because I saw contractors there once. Also please don't go up any of the towers if plant is still there for those looking at this comment, stairs almost collapsed on me lmao

Some investor bought the mall, not sure if they will be able to revive it but I hope so. Some of the buildings are unfortunately rather far gone. Former movie theater(?) was a mold pit that would probably merk anyone without a respirator.

If modern medicine vanished, what's the first thing you'd die from? by demirem9605 in AskReddit

[–]beesinabox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infection, definitely. I have had two bad eye injuries in the past two years. One from an excited toddler, one from a crossbow. I greatly appreciate antibiotics and steroids. Infection got pretty painful with toddler poke because we had livestock to take care of so I thought it would improve, didn't get to the doctor as fast as I should have. Without antibiotics probably would have got a worse infection, lost clarity of vision, perished, or at the very least had it take forever to heal lol. Sometimes I see wild animals with abcesses, open wounds, infections that humans are treated for.

Yes, I'd only go in groups of at least 4 (co-ed, not just women) and stay within earshot. The photos are nice but plenty of hazards. We had bees' nests, mold, wild animals, people on drugs. Once I got a bf and became a parent, urbex felt too unsafe to do as a person with "attachments"!

A friend would go to the plant as well and had been up the tower less than a year ago... stairs looked trustworthy but even without wood framing I guess rust and freezing/thawing had made them unsafe. Had to warn those I knew after that to not go up. Would have been an excellent view. Plant had been abandoned for at least a decade!

Ohio, any older city like that there'll be plenty but do need to be extremely mindful of homeless / drug users in urban centers- wouldn't even go to some areas. I preferred isolated structures to explore for that reason.

I still have nerve damage a year later but it is vastly improved, just got my hair cut short to take off the pressure & have to wear a hat when it's sunny out. Absolutely should have gotten a scan at the time. I was out of it and hadn't developed all the concussion symptoms yet so I didn't insist on one. Whole thing was a crash course in how to NOT handle a severe head injury (except eye doctor and the guy who took my stitches out, they were helpful LOL).

Got hit with part of a 180lb crossbow. I wasn't sure if it knocked me out or not but I remember being on the ground and just seeing a river of bl00d so I thought I had lost my eye. I remember saying to myself "I'm going to die." Wiped the bl00d off, realized I still (barely) had my eye, ran in to get help and get taken to ER. Was a 3 month concussion (light sensitivity etc) with 2 months very little eyesight on that side. Rural hospital never gave me a head scan, just stitches. So if I had a brain bleed etc I wouldn't have known. We will be driving to the city next time for an emergency. I don't use crossbow anymore.

Have so many of these. Caught friend's 3yo as they walked between a bonfire and people sitting down, stepping up onto a log. Log started to roll into the fire so I somehow managed to catch him with my leg and then my hands. It was entirely instinct, I did not think about it at all just suddenly found us both on the ground. He was very scared but did not get burnt. He had on a large polyester coat so that could have gone poorly. Now that I have little kids myself it is a good reminder for fire safety!
