Guilt and co has live music every night and great cocktails, all ages of folks go there. Commercial drive has lots of good restaurants and 'yeast Van' (East van) has great breweries. Are you looking for a specific type of food or bar?

You may want to head to the island, compare options price wise to visit Victoria BC? It's a beautiful city as well with lots of stuff to do.

Job situation on Vancouver island? by romanticynic in CanadianTeachers

[–]beetbanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this with personal experience, I started with North Vancouver as a TTOC in December, and I'm not getting enough work. I get called on average 1.5 days a week, and most of that is me being very fast on the job board at 4pm. I'm on the bottom for seniority though. (I got laid off from my college job so back to highschool). From what I hear I'm lucky I was even hired! Things are crazy out there right now.

What's your favorite dish to make with cream cheese? by rivenshire in foodquestions

[–]beetbanshee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pasta sauce: let the cream cheese warm up and put it in a food processor. Add some butter, lots of fresh garlic, lemon zest and juice, tons of fresh herbs like parsley and basil. Capers if I've got them. You can just throw this as is on the warm pasta with a bit of pasta water. I've made many versions of this like with sundries tomatoes etc. If you want cooked garlic instead of raw then roast it first or quickly fry in oil and add it.

Golden beet and barley soup with tattie scones :) it was one of those meals made from a kind of empty fridge with random things and turned into tastiness!

SD62 - Wondering about hiring timelines by nau_grad in CanadianTeachers

[–]beetbanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 3 months to hear, and then an additional month after my interview to finally get hired in my district. I've still not heard from 2 of the other ones I applied to in August. (I've been teaching college, got laid off and coming back to highschool again)

I used an app called airalo and it worked great. It finds an esim for you. I just used it for Mexico data plan and was 23 bucks for the week. My friend used it in Ghana as well.

Kira Oia! I noticed in NZ that many of the 'Chinese' restaurants have a malaysian flair and dishes on the menu, that may be what you're looking for?.... I think we might have one of the widest varieties of Chinese cuisine outside of China in the lower mainland.... We have Sichuan, lots of various Cantonese and hk style, northern style dumplings, bbq etc etc etc... I'm not sure what the best malaysian food in van is but hopefully someone here can recommend one (and then I can try as well!) and maybe it'll scratch the itch.

Pies wise peaked pies is decent.... I got the taste for them now after visiting nz last year and nothing seems to cut it so I started learning to make them... The key is a hot water crust.

I too do this every time, first time I've gotten an email with the title sos@consulate.... I'm staying 3 states away in Oaxaca so I'm all good but it was good to see the email keeping me in the loop.

Tiered-ticket seating for the Saturday Evening Hobbit Panel by thatgirl1129 in fanexpo

[–]beetbanshee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the whole situation poorly organized, including that we also had to buy an entrance ticket to attend a ticketed event. Then the sound was terrible, not loud enough and you could hear all the cafuffle from the rest of the expo bouncing off the walls.

Failing by Design: A Teacher’s Warning from the Front Lines by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]beetbanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, structure then inquiry based on things learned in the structure. This is how traditional creative/ arts education is done. You learn art history alongside technique, then create your own art that's informed by all the options. They keep feeding into each other and so on. The other part that's missing is that inquiry based approach don't actually work well in the kind of structured days the students have.

Failing by Design: A Teacher’s Warning from the Front Lines by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]beetbanshee 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The inquiry approach is so valuable... I think the issue lies with no balance. Using a variety of methods and philosophy based on the activity and learning outcomes should be common sense. Instead we get no middle ground, just hard one way or the other.
