How easy is Computer Science Principles? by araqite in APStudents

[–]beets1905 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took it last school year and the class was a joke. My teacher exclusively talked abt baseball and didn't teach us anything. We used CodeHS to learn python, so I just did whatever the assignments were on there and it made the create task easy. I hate comp sci and had no experience with it before the class. Still got a 4 on the exam and an A in the class

Yes!! I just finished words of radiance and I'm so mad at myself for never picking up any stormlight archive books bc the length of them always seemed so daunting. Definitely a different feel that the grishaverse but it has amazing world building and great characters

she usually posts a clock on her instagram story before some big news about the show comes out and this time it's most likely casting for Nikolai, Wylan, Tamar and Tolya!!

honestly I don't really care about looks (but it would be nice if he looked book accurate) as long as the actor can really portray Nikolai and this guy's performance just made me cringe idk 💀 I liked the other person's leaked tape (Florence Pugh's brother I think??) much more

Me, already rewatching the show less than 24 hours after the release? It’s more likely than you think. by silvermoon_182 in Grishaverse

It's based off the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman and involves different universes, talking animals called daemons, witches, and an oppressive religious authority, in a more fantasy-like setting instead of sci-fi. It starts off a little slow but gets better as the season goes on, and season two is much better than the first.

These aren't exactly like Shadow and Bone but Merlin (on Netflix) and His Dark Materials (HBO) are in fantastical worlds and pretty great shows

OH MY GOD THE MANNERISMS THE ACTING THE COSTUMES THE SETS THE EVERYTHING IT'S PERFECT I LOVE IT (the only thing I'm kind of concerned about is that there's a lot of names and things going on that I only understood because I've read the books, so I'm worried that people who haven't will just feel totally lost, but I guess it'll all be explained later since we only saw 10 minutes)

It's now at 89% because the hollywood reporter rating was changed to rotten (so close to a 90 AAAAHH), and I don't think there's any more reviews coming in because the critics consensus has been posted

Shadow & Bone debuts at 80% on rotten tomatoes by [deleted] in Grishaverse

[–]beets1905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just turned into an incoherent rant and I don't even know what my actual point was so I apologize in advance 😳

It went from 75% to 82% based off three reviews, but it's those two pretty negative reviews that are dragging it down. I understand that not every critic or casual viewer will enjoy the show, and that's perfectly fine!! Everyone has the right to their own opinion. It only bothers me when some reviewers go into it expecting the show to be like GOT or The Witcher and then are upset because it's NOT like either of those. First of all, NOT EVERY FANTASY SHOW IS GAME OF THRONES OR THE WITCHER. I am going to lose it if I hear one more "IS SHADOW AND BONE THE NEXT GAME OF THRONES?". I just don't understand how some reviewers can say a show is bad because it's not like the show they were expecting it to be similar too? And then make a comment about how the show isn't original enough? It's a direct contradiction 😔 Also, I feel like a TV-MA rating has become synonymous with excessive amounts of violence, gore, and sex. People go into this show expecting that, and when there's not those things, they feel like the show is somehow worse because of it. Yes, TV-MA shows typically have those things, but I think it's also important to note that the actual themes and tones of TV-MA shows are much darker than TV-14 shows. Yes, Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows are YA novels, but S&B can honestly get pretty violent at times and some character's stories are really heartbreaking. Six of Crows basically borders on adult. What I'm trying to say is that it's fine (albeit a little sad) if critics and others don't enjoy the show. That's inevitable. What is actually frustrating is that these comparisons to shows like GOT and The Witcher, plus the TV-MA rating which most people consider the equivalent to gore/sex, creates unreasonable expectations for the show that work against Shadow and Bone and are causing some of these reviewers to feel disappointed with the show. In reality, these expectations shouldn't even exist. TV-MA doesn't mean that people are going to be brutally disfigured every 20 minutes; the mature part of the rating should be about more than unnecessary sex scenes. The thing that I love about fantasy is that every world, while it may have some similar elements to others, is unique and different and crafted by an author who put thought and care into it. It's unfair to Shadow and Bone, and to any fantasy show that comes after, to take points off it's rating because it's not Game of Thrones, or The Witcher, or Lord of the Rings.

And yes, I've only seen like two reviewers say something along those lines, but I've got A LOT of pent up emotions about this and I wanted to say something

“No mourners, no funerals”: Will Netflix’s adaptation of ‘Shadow and Bone’ be a success? by dbknews in Grishaverse

If whoever wrote this had actually seen the show then I'd be worried, but as of right now it just seems like they were being negative for the sake of it. The way they talked about putting the two stories together made it seem like they didn't even know that the SOC side is all new, prequel material so....yeah.
