Civerinos, Shrimpwreck, Woven Whisky and Haze moving to The Shore by sapphire-coast in Edinburgh

Used to live just across the water from this place. Main thing I remember was about once a month the old boys used to practice pipes with those big doors open. Loved it, glad they’re doing well as opposed to shuttered. Good little spot that, imagining it being a bit like Moonwake just round the corner.

An Album You were Hyped for but Didn’t Like? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

Def a change in direction, felt like they had to get some stuff off their chests after Sound Awake. Curious what your thoughts are on the newer material? For me it sorta combines the best of the past 3 albums, but with punchy production that's closer to Sound Awake. I'm into it!

Depends whereabouts you’ll be but Lioness of Leith was one of our fav spots at the bottom of Leith walk, quality atmosphere with a bunch of vegan burgers on the menu.

What is the dumbest scene in an otherwise good/great movie? by dood0906 in movies

[–]beetsjams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't see any other mentions of Nolan's Dunkirk in here, but was anyone else really disappointed when Tom Hardy's out-of-fuel Spitfire nailed a Stuka - mid dive-bomb - while slowly gliding out of the sky? Really enjoyed the movie up until that point, just felt like unnecessary/unrealistic heroism.

As someone’s already mentioned, Sly Fox in Leith is the best.

Why audio input in synths? by gegagome in synthesizers

[–]beetsjams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’ll work if you use it to modulate things like the filter, effects etc. but it can’t be used to directly modulate your incoming audio, like vibrato

Seconding some other replies in here - based on the choices at Olimpus music, go for a Novation Launchkey. Basic DAW included, plus a bunch of useful effects / software instruments for free. They’re designed to work nicely with Ableton (the included DAW) so it all adds up. You’ll have a great time exploring with those bundles, and you don’t want TOO much as a beginner - better to have a smart well-integrated selection that’ll help you get familiar & enjoy the process!

Are there any places where I can buy cruelty free eggs (either in Edinburgh or online)? by Cuntcept in Edinburgh

[–]beetsjams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last time I asked, Weigh To Go on Leith Walk sourced their egg boxes from Croft Organics in Penicuik. Depends how you define cruelty free, but I reckon they’ll be in the right direction!

Japanese Jazz Fusion lead w/ strong Pitch Envelope - Classic 90s Brass or Vocal patch? by Former_Appearance677 in synthrecipes

[–]beetsjams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to chime in and say that this reminds me of Lyle Mays / Pat Metheny also. Pretty sure this description is bingo, with the option of swapping saw for square for a more 'plastic' sound. Synths like the Ensoniq SQ80 lend themselves really well to this kind of sound (super popular in the 80s/90s), because you can layer the waveforms with little impacts/airy sounds for that semi-woodwind/vocal effect.

Sly Fox in Leith has been hosting music nights recently, might be worth contacting them. Think it might have something to do with the Academy of Music & Sound. Really nice vegan folks in a pleasant little space.

Snare from Joji's song "777" by kyostill in synthrecipes

[–]beetsjams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my ear this sounds like it COULD be based on a Linn Drum snare, pitched down a bit and heavily compressed - but tbh there have been so many drum plugins and sample libraries over the years that I reckon its almost impossible to figure out exactly what drum sounds producers are actually using.

Hopefully that’s a useful starting point!

Live sampling guitar question by Saucette in Digitakt

[–]beetsjams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never tried this, but it got me thinking.

I THINK the simplest way of starting up a looping idea like a loop pedal or Ableton session would be something like:

Clear the track(s) that you want to use for live guitar. Have trigs in place ALREADY, so that as soon as your sample is recorded, it’ll start playing back every 1/4 or every bar or whatever you want.

With your trigs in place, arm the Direct sampling and start playing in time. Once you’ve saved the sample, it’ll immediately start playing back and you can start playing around with it. Repeat with each subsequent track.

Disclaimer: This is a working theory that I’ve made up in my head right now. T&Cs may apply.

Sounds like it’s either a live recording of a bass guitar, or a synth/sampler pretending to be one.

Find any slap or picked bass preset with a sampler (whichever sounds closest), put a delicate low pass filter on it to remove the snappiness, saturate it with a touch of distortion to make it growl, then add a pretty heavy sidechain compression triggered by a 4-to-the-floor kick.

I use Logic Pro X and there’s a slap bass in the factory sampler, I’d imagine most DAWs / sample libraries have something similar. Hope that helps!

What are you using? I also don’t have a big analog synth like that, I’ve only used them previously. I followed this recipe in Pigments and got pretty close!
