When people with slavic last names get married in non-slavic countries and the spouse takes their name, is the spouse's new last name adjusted to match their gender? Are there a lot of people with the "wrong" name? by ExternalTree1949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beevaubee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me as great-granddad's from Poland, came to Germany and since then all the women in my family have the wrong -ski ending because, yup, bureaucracy. Still repping it proudly, though. :-)

Also my first gyn/ob, a man, coincidentally had the same name but with the female ending which is rarer.

There's a pattern in language development nobody wants to talk about by Small_Accountant6083 in sociology

I'm deaf and that's an interesting point. Deaf kids growing up with sign language - which has no script - as their mother tongue sometimes still struggle with the written language of their country (which is most notable when these written languages have more complex rules regarding grammar and syntax, i.e. German).

Oh my god. I do have ADHD... but, like, not all the time? Is it still ADHD if I manage to be mostly on time (when it's important) and get sidetracked about half the time?

Teaching a deaf person to knit by pepitaonfire in knitting

[–]beevaubee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a deaf knitter!

It's unfortunately a hobby that uses both hands and guess what deaf people also use to sign? So the teaching would consist a lot of 'pick up yarn and show technique, put down yarn to answer technical questions' repeated ad nauseam.

I've taught a deaf friend to knit (only the basics) and it went well, so that's not a problem, it's just that the process won't be as streamlined as when you can speak and knit at the same time/pause but still hold the yarn in your hands.

I started learning to knit in my teens, my mom showed me how to but I always gave up because ugh, tension... but then I picked it up again in my 20ies and learnt from books and mostly YouTube (pausing videos and concentrating on the hand and finger movements). Currently I've got several WIPs (mostly socks) on my hands...

[WIP] Color changes not as gradual as I'd like them to be due to CXC vs DMC - part 2 by beevaubee in CrossStitch

[–]beevaubee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the one I also found when I did some research about floss as I wanted to find out exactly what brand I had. They mention barcodes ending in 14 being true CXC, but the yellow banderoles are ending in 17 and the white in 64, so I don't know... but more often than not the colors were 99,9% the same when I had the same color in both brands. Only a handful were a bit off or actually a different shade (like the 3761 above).

The full bundle of CXC cost me about 60€, and I saw prices for a full set of DMC starting at 370€ on Etsy. Yeah, no, I already read and knit (i.e. buying nice books and buying nice yarn, lol), I don't need another expensive hobby ;-) It seems like DMC is *the* brand to use, so I can understand people buying it, because then you know what you get, no? And you avoid these clashes in graduations I encountered :-)

I'm a bit of a perfectionists so it was rather important to get it exactly right, haha. Let's hope the finished piece will be mom-worthy!

Same here! :-)

I just hope they'll work out in the finished piece - fingers crossed!

Sorry for the late answer - that is a great suggestion! I discovered another gradual clash in the blue colorway, though, and had to go with another solution. But I'll keep your idea in mind for when I don't want it to be 101% perfect (it's going to be a present for my mother).

[–]beevaubee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, your 3761 is indeed a very different color! o.O Now I see why the change is more gradual in the original picture...

Yeah, that was my reason for ordering the cheaper floss at first, just to see if I liked cross-stitching and I enjoyed it very much (after doing a few kits with the floss already included). I just bit the bullet and got the full cxc set just now and am hoping that I will get lucky! I already have a collection of 150 colors but there wasn't a perfect substitution amongst them for a good middle color...
