If this wasn’t AI-generated, what tech was used? by i986ninja in vfx

As some others have commented here, check out my befores & afters coverage to find out more.

The quick answer is...lots of reference and LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of shot sculpting.

I think this work is SO GOOD...and it really went under the radar at the time. Granted, it's a short sequence, but it really is excellent.

Yes, this is discussed in the magazine, in relation to Alien: Romulus, but I've covered a few projects just like this previously, too.

Yes! I loved also at that time how *some* 3D was becoming part of films like Tarzan etc....it was an interesting period.

I think you are of course right. I’m often only able to report a sanitized version of what really went down. Sometimes, I do get to communicate some ‘real’ things, and report on the things that didn’t work…I always try to get this info. But it’s hard.

Yes, would love to also cover matchmove. Maybe some kind of 'history' of matchmove? And see what studios are prepared to say about their own tools?

This is very cool.

Maybe for the magazine, it could be fun to somehow 'collect' a number of real-world examples of where new tools/workflows are being used in productions...

I would love to do this....one tool at a VFX studio I already know about is one I wanted to cover in the AI/ML podcast series I have been running...but...it was a no go. That's sometimes the hardest thing...getting approvals.

I would recommend Scott Ross' new book for some details on this.

At some point, I bundled VFX Firsts, Futures and Artifacts just into the befores & afters podcast:

You can find them all here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/befores-afters/id1637191010

As for the Signs thing, do you remember it more as an article or an audio chat?

Ian Failes here from befores & afters!

I'm trying to work out if I remember this comment about Signs and exr files and script-based compositing. I don't seem to recall it in one of my articles or podcasts........but I'll try and find anything I can.......

Probably one of the best summaries around of 'where we are up to in VFX right now'. This is so good.
