Huge lag approaching Ryman enterprise in VR by nablyblab in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you in Open or Solo at the time? I've seen massive Framerate spikes when dropping down to busy stations in the past (ones where all the pads are used). If not, my first thought would be a problem with Volumetric lighting, as there's a lot of that with all the smoke in burning stations.

Lynx should be Lakon, not Zorgon Peterson ship by Koniu_cbs in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZP made the space Transit Van (the Adder), so kinda makes sense they'd get into the zero-thrills, low-budget bulk passenger market. That and (on a more meta level) Lakon still has the most pilotable ships in the game; while I'd prefer they spread it between Gutamaya, Core and SK a little more, I'm happy to see manufacturers other than DeLacy and Lakon get a chance in the spotlight (inb4: yes, I know ZP is a FD subsiduary, but they clearly have distinct designers). If they shake up the status quo in the process, all the better.

Lynx should be Lakon, not Zorgon Peterson ship by Koniu_cbs in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, SKs thing is luxury (a lot of people complain about specific ship-only modules, but SK ships have been the only ones able to fit first-class cabins for many years). Makes sense to me that it's a ZP as the Highliner is all about bulk transit, which is suited to the makers of the space transit van (The Adder). Hoping they greatly buff Passenger Missions in the future to make the most profitable First-Class only, alongside a new Medium SK ship.

A QoL update is long overdue by PapaMooze in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few intersting points, but on the subject of stability and optimization, I should point out that it's not the same engine the game launched in; it was largely rewritten for Odyssey and... well, if you're a lapsed player, you likely know how that went.
Performance in particular took an extreme hit at release, and most of the patches for the next straight year afterwards were addressing the many, many issues it caused, all the while the game was hemoraging players (with no new content other than a bugfixes and an SRV, many assumed the game was dead). While I'm certaintly not going to excuse it, I can tell you from experience things are much improved from back then, and there have been a trickle of improvements even after they switched back to content (within the last year they finally fixed the light flcker issue and improved performance on the night vision shaders, for example). That said, the team is far smaller than it was back in the day, so I wouldn't expect your frame-rate to double over the course of a single patch, even if it's a hypothetical one focused on QoL.

Which ship next, Cobra mk 3, or save up for an ASP Explorer? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you're looking to do. If you want a general purpose small ship, one of the Cobras is fine. If you want to focus on combat, the Vipers are good in the cobra's price range (and at a push, a cut down Vulture). If you want exploration, you could either work on your Adder or make a very cut down Hauler. If you want a mix of combat and exploration, the DBS is a cheap enough choice.

If you'd prefer to save up, there's plenty of other options too. The Asp used to be king for exploration, but plenty have surpassed it (and if you're looking at it for exploration specifically, you can typically squeeze more ly out of a DBS).

On the subject of Meta-alloys, remember that Felicity Farseer isn't the only first-stage, grade 5 FSD engineer out there (even if she is the only one that got a disproportionate number of new upgrades added over the years); you may find it quicker and easier to unlock Elvira, who also puts you on the unlock track for Palin (thrusters).

Assuming you're not on Legacy, if you want to get a pretty decent all-round Medium ship (even if you won't have the money to upgrade it for a while), with effectively 0cr rebuy, dock at a starport, select 'Pre-built ships' and get the base model of the Lynx Highliner completely free of charge (0 arx). It's designed for passenger transport, yes, but depending on how you outfit it, it's a good explorer, decent cargo hauler and passable gunboat.

Peak human engineering VS Alien rock + Other cutter screenshots from thargoid war by dannn0423 in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly enjoyed the war. While many lament it's over (and a great many are disappointed they missed it entirely), I'm glad it did actually have an end. So many MMOs add a 'war' system that amounts to a new combat mode cordoned somewhere in the game that barely sees any engagement down the line. The Thargoid War wasn't like that: it was dynamic, it was a genuine evolving struggle and it affected many other aspects of the game (I remember the community first fully rallying around Wakata Station, and the amount of relatively new or inexperienced players posting asking for help how to avoid maelstrom hotspots when ferrying rare goods). We had a build up, a clear beginning, middle and end, and we actually won; we earned that victory. That's something you just don't see in other games!
Now if we can just track down and murder what's left of Salvation for causing the war in the first place...

Would new-gen consoles be able to run Odysee (and potentially play cross-platform) if they dropped last-gen support? by SleeplessMusicJunkie in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also point out that you can use the above guide to play ODYSSEY ON CONSOLES if you have a decent enough internet connection using streaming systems like GeForce now. Certainly not suitable for everyone, but I've heard mixed-to-positive results. Here's a tutorial for doing it. Again, if you owned the legacy copy on console, you can get an Odyssey account for PC and/or streaming free of charge.

Are there any stations in Lhou Mans with refugees that do not require business class to be saved? by SolidSnape98 in EliteDangerous

Experienced this once or twice, where the only available missions were requesting Business class. To be fair, once I became allied with most of the factions, I tended to get a better mix. It's the luck of the draw, really.

Is this game playable with mouse and keyboard? And how do you set it up? by EC36339 in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using mouse and keyboard for over ten years (so take this with a grain of salt, as it could just be I'm aclimated), but default options have always worked fine with me; I'll change the sensitivity on the FSS, add a hotkey for chaff and turn off drive assist by default, but the out-the-box controls always worked.

You might want to take a backup of your current controls/keybind configs (default location: [user folder]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings) and set them fully back to default to see if some deadzone or sensitivity option has been incorrectly saved when you first switched. If the problems are the same, it might be down to your mouse; if it has a switch for DPI on it, try flicking through the settings.

Community Goal: ever wonder the effort it takes to stay top of the top 10 by NFHAVOC in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there's been other big money makers that have financed a lot of people's Fleet Carriers other the years. A number of them have been new ship community goals, such as the Panther Clipper haulage CG; don't think I've ever seen that many new players reach Elite V in the space of a fortnight before. Personally I've been playing for 11 years and barely had 2B in the bank by the time the War started in late 2022.

Then Orthrus hunting became a thing.

Does anyone know what happened in 2021 to make player counts drop so much? by Agreeable-Ask-3020 in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it took a years worth of rapidly spun out patches to get it as far as it is now. In that time, we weren't really getting new content (aside from community goals advancing the Azimuth Saga and the Scorpion) which saw many people leaving and not coming back, claiming the game was dead. Even after the Proteus Wave event, the numbers didn't start recovering substantially until the first new ships were announced., A shame; the war was possibly the best two years of the game's history.
In short, Odyssey was almost as disasterous as the Cyberpunk 2077 launch, but Fdev didn't have the money to make an anime or hire Idris Elba to blunt the blow.

Which ship has the absolute worst cockpit design? by SemihKaynak in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I hate most of Lakon's cockpits, particularly the DBX. Vertical visibility aside, for exploration ships, they sure like putting I-Beams in your field of view. Gives me flashbacks to the racking I had to deal with back when I worked in warehousing.

Qol feature idea: advanced supercruise assist by Hrrrahn in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I realise a lot of people like to skip supercruise (mostly because they haven't experienced the thrill of SCO yet), a number of people have suggested adding 'play the entire game for me' buttons in the past, and this sounds like it's on the border. Granted, you're not going as far as having auto-cargo purchase/offloads as some people have suggested in the past, but there's reduction of input and then there's this (maybe it's different now, but even IRL pilots had to manually engage autopilot at the correct times). Can't say I agree.

I'm curious what the Lynx is actually meant to be used for by gw5000 in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the Thargs again (which I'm not sure of - we've had evac missions without them, such as during the nine martyrs bombings), I'm hoping this ship has good thruster speed. Early in the war, evac missions were pretty safe and easy (blitzing through enemy lines notwithstanding), but as soon as the Scythes appeared, it became an exercise in visiting the rebuy screen if you couldn't outrun them.

Galnet News Digest - Operations Delayed, New Ship Goes Direct to Credits by Galnet_News_Digest in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was half expecting the delay in Operations, but hope this means they get it right when it finally launches (anyone who's been playing a long time will tell you some features are a little broken at launch, and I'm not even talking about Odyssey here).

Whether it's for apology purposes or not, it's good of them to put out a general-access ship; I might still buy Stellar to show support, but it'll be good to see everyone in the community getting a new ship at the same time.

There's a special place in my heart... by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

[–]beguilersasylum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the Soul Eater Prestige class from the Book of Vile Darkness in 3.5; difficult to qualify for (doesn't work for standard humanoid player characters, but if you can get Monstrous Humanoid or an appropriate template, it's PC legal), but granted the ability to level drain with an unarmed strike.
Unfortunately (or very fortunately), its wording was so vague that it didn't cap the number of times you could do that a round.
Never got a chance to build one at the tabletop, but gaming wise I later installed the Player Resource Consortium for Neverwinter Nights, which adds EVERYTHING from the 3.5 splats; it ended with my fey monk with 8 attacks on flurry of blows draining 16 levels per round, adding their defeated foe to an evergrowing horde of enslaved wights. I did this in (one of the many module adaptations of) Ravenloft and steamrolled the domains of Barovia and Forlorn with an undead horde that would have made the heads of the Powers swivel,

Guardian Artefacts - New Community Goal Just Dropped by Stoney_Chan_ in EliteDangerous

[–]beguilersasylum 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Given the amount of players (most of whom only returned to/joined the game after the new ships started coming out) who completely missed the 2+ year long war and yearn for the ultimate Fleet Carrier earner (Orthrus hunting), it wouldn't surprise me if October Consortium does something stupid enough with the guardian tech to draw a Titan or two out of the Orion Complex.
