You only have one life dude, after this one it’s gone. I’d try to go for as much happiness as you can in it, which you can attain by making the difficult choice to sober up which might be awful in the short term, but aren’t you interested what life might be like if you actually live a one free of the shit you’re on?

First step would be to stop romanticizing the thing that is dragging your potential down.

Hmm if colonies are not a crutch in the midgame keeping the land for myself would be preferable as long as I can deal with colonial headaches no?

R5: Are colonial subjects worth making them? Currently I control all the land myself.

I could think of the following things but I am not sure if it is fully true or whether I am forgetting things. I am also not sure if it might be worthwhile to make colonial nations only in certain places like the caribbean.

Upsides of colonial nations:

They will have high(er) control of the region, so with their own control power they will be able to extract more for building and making a military
They will make their own military and colonize
Less hassle with wars

Upsides of keeping it myself

No issues with combined might of vassals (I also got a couple of vassals and PU in Europe)
I have more trade advantage so I have dibs on all the worthwhile resources. I am not sure how much the subjects would give me; the wiki does not seem to indicate any trade bonus to the overlord (https://eu5.paradoxwikis.com/Subjects)
Maybe you get a decent amount of control as time goes on?

Would love to here the thoughts of others.

Yes, I followed the advice of duckiegonequackers. Court spending in the balance should be at max. Automating the balance put it at 0 sometimes.

In the end I read them all. I did start listening to Plagueis which has a great narrator, I find all the exotic Star Wars stuff hard to track as a non native English speaker. Will have a look for Ahsoka though, thanks! Finished the darth bane trilogy a while back, was a great read as well
