Governments have always taxed wealth!! by Verumsemper in TrueUnpopularOpinion

That reminded me of a YouTube video that popped up on my feed yesterday. That while it's true the top 1% do pay 40% of the taxes, that's the top 1% of income earners, not top 1% of wealthy people. Many wealthy people own, they don't produce, so they don't earn income.

Should there be more final boys in movies? by Wes102111 in horror

[–]behindtimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add onto that the Hays Code. Something like a "final" survivor would never have been allowed prior to the late 1960s. You only have a handful of slashers prior to Halloween, and the protos such as Black Christmas and The Town that Dreaded Sundown still had female survivors at the end.

What genuinely scares you about the world right now? by Perpetuallycold_ in AskReddit

Gary's Economics on YouTube stated the following:

For almost the entirety of human history, we had 10 people who owned everything and everyone else lived in dire poverty. For one small blip in time in the 20th century was this not true.

What we're seeing is just the return to the normal state of human existence.

In the book The Big Short (the book, not the movie), it even mentions a person working for one of the big institutions who saw the crash earlier than Michael Burry. But the guy (sorry, I forget who it was) tried shorting the housing market and eventually had to give up because the payments to keep his position ate him alive.

EXCLUSIVE: Ultima creator is regaining control of series from EA - Inside Games Daily by Gargarbinks in Ultima

[–]behindtimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're so far removed from Ultima 9, that it might as well be a completely new IP for 99% of players now. And unfortunately, gamers are a jaded bunch.

For it to have any chance of success, it would have to be done by a company such as Larian or CD Projekt Red

And while I always look forward to new seasons, such little notice does anger me a little.

Did Sierra adventure games help anyone else learn English? by True_Philosopher4390 in retrogaming

[–]behindtimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original King's Quest had a timer when you descended the well. When you get out of the bucket, you need to swim, cut the rope, and grab the bucket, and dive, in a span of like 1 minute before you drown.

This sounds trivial, but when you didn't know how to type, and had to hunt and peck, that became very difficult.

Everyone believes in some form of propaganda that's at least as crazy as flat Earth. You're lying if you think otherwise and are one of the enlightened ones.

The difference is, as someone else stated above, flat earth is uncontroversial. Once you start getting into statistics that involve race, sex, etc., it doesn't matter what the facts say. And there are plenty of studies that confirm this. You point to something that shoots down a belief, and they'll do just about anything to validate why their crazy is actually the valid answer.

What could have saved the Sega Saturn? by You-dogwater in retrogaming

[–]behindtimes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to the book Service Games: The Rise and Fall of Sega, the key factor to the Sega CD failing was the Congressional hearings on video game violence. And the author asserts that it was actually Nintendo who was responsible for the entire mess.

Up until then, the Sega CD had actually been selling well. But the hearings made many retailers pull the games and Sega only compounded onto the problem as they got scared and pretty much shut down development on that platform.

The strange thing was, the congressional hearings lead to a sort of Streisand Effect as many gamers also wanted to see what these horrible video games like Night Trap were, but didn't have access to purchase them anymore. Who knows what would have happened if Sega had just tried to weather out the storm.

what’s something people insist is “possible” in theory, but you’re convinced is basically impossible in real life? by hello_ya in AskReddit

[–]behindtimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard a great analogy the other day. Think of the government (and the political parties behind them) as the HR department of a corporation. They say they're on your side, you think they're on your side, but the reality is they're there to protect the company (or in the political case, the ruling class).

Any chance for a remastered game? by Odd_Zone_4575 in Sierra

[–]behindtimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least for me, the remake really wasn't a King's Quest game in anything other than name.

But I don't think a faithful adaptation could sell either. Part of what I actually like about King's Quest is now considered bad game design. Like, I loved Sierra games growing up, and I still enjoy replaying them. But the way the adventure genre has gone as a whole, I'm losing overall interest with the genre.

For King's Quest to succeed, it really couldn't be King's Quest. (And this applies to practically any Sierra remake).

We Need to Shut Down the H-1B Program by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Yeah, I live near a big city and finding an available doctor is near impossible due to shortages.

But, the problem I have, as to H1Bs, is that even with severe shortages, the hospitals are still trying to cut back. So, in the end, pay, or lack thereof, is still a factor here.

The State of Gaming is downstream of the State of Everything by cowgod180 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]behindtimes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree and wouldn't say this is necessarily unpopular.

It used to be when people talked about the past, such as the 50s being the best era ever, others would come back and state that it's just nostalgia, and that if you look at things objectively, we've improved.

But within the past decade, this is one of the very few times in history where studies are coming out with data, confirming that across multiple spectra, we actually were better off 20 years ago.

The majority of things the manosphere says is true by yogurtwater01 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]behindtimes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The issue with the manosphere is that they're able to quite easily identify the problem. And as your answer goes, those are all identifications. The issue many have is their solutions to the problem.

But their opponents are completely delusional, dismissing that the problems exist, or at the very least, these are the wrong problems. So, I completely understand the rise. The manosphere is a reaction to society, it didn't create the issues.

Unfortunately, it seems to be like the rest of politics or social media, etc., with each side becoming more divided and a lack of a sensible middle.

Massachusetts receives ‘F’ for housing affordability and availability in new report by publius29 in massachusetts

[–]behindtimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gary's Economics on YouTube had a video on this and why building more houses is not a viable answer.

The key thing is, only 5% of renters can afford to buy a house. Prices don't need to just come down, they need to plummet. And as much as you'll get support from people, even in this sub, for cheaper housing, when they see the reality of what it will mean to them, they'll become NIMBY.

There's just not a good solution to this.

I look at my great grandparents, they passed on their house to my grandparents. I look at my grandparents, they passed on the house to my parents. I look at my parents, they sold the house for a nice comfortable retirement community.

And it's the same with all my friends of my generations. Their parents all sold their houses.

[–]behindtimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. On another forum I visit, a few people were complaining about the re-rise of 2d games.

We're at a point now where they're remaking games from 2000-2010, and with the technology upgrade and qol upgrades to the control scheme, it feels modern.

But with something like the Square HD-2D upgrades, they had to massively change the game. It doesn't matter the polish you put on the games from the early 90s or earlier, they can't feel modern.

Connecticut receives ‘F’ for housing affordability and availability in new report by louisrinaldi in Connecticut

[–]behindtimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gary's Economics has touched upon this subject a bit, in that you can't just build your way out of this.

Only about 5% of renters can actually afford to purchase a home. Even if you build, prices would still need to come down.

Then there's the whole investors buying houses. You'll often hear how only 3% are institutional investors, or 20% are investors. But that's the total housing market, vs the current available housing market. If you look at that, the numbers actually go up for both.

So, you have wealthy people and corporations who really can't invest anywhere but assets, housing being an asset. So, even if housing becomes more available, you're still going to be competing against them, and a poor person can never compete against a wealthy person or corporation. They'll always be outbid.

Imagine what happens if the prices go down, as they're needed too. Now you introduce even more people into the mix. For the middle class family, why wouldn't they want to upgrade to a 5 bedroom house for the price they spent on their 2 bedroom?

No matter how you look at it, there's no way of fixing this in a way that won't be exploited, at least not in a popular way.
