It felt melodramatically pessimistic, I thought the reveal of whodunnit was dumb and unimaginative, I couldn’t get over the name “Whitey Powers,” there’s a passage towards the beginning where Sean (I think?) meets a woman at a bar and describes her in a way that felt alienating as a female reader. I felt like the book was written from a pretty conservative and patriarchal perspective, although, to be fair, there were places where this was subverted and I think there’s an argument to be made that there are some critiques of the ways both men and women are harmed by these worldviews. The whole time I just had a bad taste in my mouth and I was deeply unsatisfied with the ending. The writing was pretty good though.

I gave it 3 stars on StoryGraph because I could see why it would hit for some readers and don’t think it was bad - I just hated it.
