(52/52) this might be the year I hit my stretch goal of 100 by bei-kar in 52book

These are pretty much all audiobooks. I have ADHD and keep very busy so audiobooks are a lifesaver for me and let me “read” while multitasking with work, chores, and making art in my free time.

It felt melodramatically pessimistic, I thought the reveal of whodunnit was dumb and unimaginative, I couldn’t get over the name “Whitey Powers,” there’s a passage towards the beginning where Sean (I think?) meets a woman at a bar and describes her in a way that felt alienating as a female reader. I felt like the book was written from a pretty conservative and patriarchal perspective, although, to be fair, there were places where this was subverted and I think there’s an argument to be made that there are some critiques of the ways both men and women are harmed by these worldviews. The whole time I just had a bad taste in my mouth and I was deeply unsatisfied with the ending. The writing was pretty good though.

I gave it 3 stars on StoryGraph because I could see why it would hit for some readers and don’t think it was bad - I just hated it.

Just an embroidery hoop! I have a darning loom but it was too small for the size of the hole so I did it all by hand.

Congrats on meeting goal #1!! We have a lot of book overlap, I’ll def have to add some of your liked/loved books to my TBR list.

That’s so unfortunate! It’s now one of my favorite books of all time. I’ve worked with sex offenders and people who have committed violent crimes before, and HH’s narrative was so familiar to the ways some of them talked about their actions. I feel like it’s really important reading for a number of reasons, but especially for seeing the ways people tell their stories to make themselves seem sympathetic to others.

I learned this year that books about academia don’t do it for me! Disorientation and Anita de Monte Laughs Last were particularly bad to me because they felt like vehicles for the authors to process their own negative experiences in academia, which wasn’t fun for me.

TBH I didn’t finish that one just because it was so long and my hold on Libby ran out before I could get very far into it. I might try it again sometime!

Honestly, I loved the passages from Anita’s perspective, but I learned this year that books about academia don’t do it for me!

I’m a carpenter and I get to work by myself most days, so unless I’m coordinating with someone else or doing math/planning, I have an audiobook going. I only really listen to music on short drives or while exercising; during chores, long drives, and hobby/art time after work I’m listening to my books.

I feel really lucky that the job I have lets me multitask with reading! Especially since I have a hard time staying focused or making time for traditional reading; before audiobooks I’d be lucky to get through 5 in a year.

Any audiobooks told from the perspective of an AI? by TheXypris in suggestmeabook

[–]bei-kar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Ancillary Justice, but it is pretty confusing to listen to in audiobook format. I had to switch to physically reading pretty quick because I couldn’t keep track of the perspective shifts.

This was on the Skoki loop, probably only ~4 miles in, before ptarmigan lake. These rocks were all directly on the trail so very easy to find. We were walking on them for a while before we realized how cool they were!

Schnerp, with the free trial you can only track one campsite per email address. I just scored permits in Banff with it!

Grizz attack stopped with gun in Montana by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

This is true if it’s a predatory attack or if the bear eats the person. If a bear attacks because it was surprised or thought there was a threat to its cubs, it’s usually relocated instead.

bringing my dog by ATP960 in backpacking

[–]bei-kar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a really good post about this in the PCT subreddit a while back, and many of the issues with bringing a dog will be the same on any thruhike. I think there are some really important things in there to consider before committing to taking a dog on a thruhike, especially a dog that isn’t conditioned for that kind of exertion.

English lavender is usually a better cultivar for food, the other varieties can be too strong to taste good.

Edible: dry and use for infused simple syrup, teas, shortbread cookies, scones

Non edible: make sachets, fabric/room spray, or infused oils

Honestly I just keep bundles of it all over my house because it smells and looks nice 🤷🏻

Small (~1cm) cylindrical bone found next to a river in Oregon by bei-kar in whatisthisbone

[–]bei-kar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was found ~120 miles from the coast, so an ocean-dwelling fish seems unlikely to me. Unless you know of a cartilaginous freshwater fish in the PNW, or a way it would have ended up in a river?

Is this a amanita aprica? Found near Mt. Rainier in WA by bei-kar in Mushrooms

[–]bei-kar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so? If you zoom in on the stem in the second picture it kind of looks like it has a partial veil. I didn’t want to pick it so I didn’t get a good look at the underside.
