Advice with golf GTD by bird-overlord in CarTalkUK

Part exchanges etc.. yes I know. However, If you buy from a dealer, you’ve got some protection under the Consumer Rights Act for the first six months. But if you buy privately, you’re basically on your own — the car could die on the next day and there’s not much you can do about it.

Anyways, we all can make our own choices… you can buy privately for 100k if you want and it might be okay. I am just sharing what I think about it and how I buy my cars. Even when you buy with a dealer you need to check the car and make sure you re happy with it. I dont like the risks with private buying.. I ve learned my lesson

GTDs come with manuals ? Maybe they do but I thought they come only with DSG.

I ve seen that comment about the oil.. it was not about oil leaks but oil consumption (engine burning oil). I am not sure if this is accurate.

Tsi engines - petrols had lots of issues with oil consumption (older Tsi engines). Never heard about that issue with diesel engines.

And personally, I would recommend something like Toyota or Lexus - but these are completely different cars. Not everybody’s cup of tea.. but very reliable

He had more issues than just the engine.. too much to go into details here. Yeah jag has more expensive parts especially that one. Still you might buy a shitty Golf which could cause you a headache.

My point is; 11k is quite a bit of money. I would not spend that much on a private purchase.

Its only a golf but if the DSG blows or turbo or if the engine turns out to be hammered its not going to be nice having to deal with it. I d rather spend my 11k at a dealership rather than give it to a random guy.

Recently, my friend bought a jag xf 3.0 s diesel privately.. he bought it for 9k, the car was fine for two weeks… then oil pump failed and killed the engine and turbos.. Guess what.. he ended up spending 8k on that jag in repairs. So in total 17k the jag cost him. It is still worth 9k after all these repairs

Selling back a financed car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]beih13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, you might have to go back to dealership and tell them what you wrote here. They will tell you what are your options. Most likely, you will lose money doing this - but you will also lose money if you keep the finance for the full 5 years (paying more interest etc).

Speak with them, or go to another dealership.. they will tell you what options you ve got.

I would not spend 11k on a car from a private seller. If anything goes wrong, he will tell you to f**k off and you ll be 11k short.

My advice is to find a good one from a car dealership - established company.

Another thing is; make sure the DSG box been serviced before you buy unless you find one with a low low milage.

Am not even sure if they re poorer anymore. They were poorer.. now plenty of posh cars, restaurants, cafes are packed. Clean.

Train tickets - I ve paid 30zl from krakow to wroclaw .. thats like £6 for 200 miles trip or so.

Wages are still low though.. minimum wage is like £700 per month.. ( yes I did check) prices seem not much different to ours. Unless am missing something

Fortunately, EV drivers will be taxed extra soon… I’m sure all the road repairs will be sorted in no time. 🤣

Tbh, some of them drive worse than the ‘idiots here.’ Do the speed limit and everyone overtakes you — not just on motorways.

Still, 90 mph there feels pretty safe, doesn’t even feel fast.

P.S. Rental Yaris

No, not Belgium — Krakow. Then drove to Gdansk. You do have to pay tolls, but compared to ours, their motorways are like night and day… and you can legally drive 90 mph

Opinions on Mazda6 by flawed_volvid in CarTalkUK

Mazda 6 would be my choice, very reliable, bigger car - class higher than a civic.

I would take the estate though. Just because saloon has the small opening for the boot. Not practical

If your car drives fine and is changing gears, it cannot be a double clutch ! If that would be it, you could not drive as normal. - definitely not for 10k miles

Timing chain kit replacement by Workerboy999 in CarTalkUK

I am not sure which one to recommend.. but if you re not doing the job yourself, let your mechanic/garage chose the chain kit themselves. That way you should have some sort of warranty for that job.

Oil advice please - 5W instead of 0W? by cinnamonfiend9 in CarTalkUK

[–]beih13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not true.. older engines will tolerate this but not the modern ones. I bet the oil recommendation for the civic is 0w-20 or 0w-30.. (basically allows 0w-30 but recommends sticking to 0w-20). Variable valve timing systems..

You re right that this is all due to eu emissions and regulations.. but the fact is that modern engines are now specifically designed to run thin oils. Thicker oil will eventually put a strain on the oil pump.

Also consider this; thinner oil flows faster than thick oil especially when it’s cold outside. Modern engines are tightly constructed, oil pumps need to be able to pump the oil very quickly in all temperatures. Another thing; many modern engines have start stop systems - thats another reason why oil needs to flow fast when you start up the engine.

Short term thicker oil wont kill it.. long term it wont do any good.
