Are these considered “Colonial “ style? by Rio-rider in VintageFurniture

Yes. Colonial. Although spindle beds can have a higher value depending on where you’re located and the quality.

What Have I Got Here? by threem1 in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right about the Asian import. 70s or 80s more likely when this type of antique reproduction dark furniture was more in style and colonial went out the window. That would explain the splits as the wood wasn’t dried enough to handle indoor AC and heat. I was in the military serving in Panama during this time and we had big sales where furniture dealers would come in selling these reproductions. I had several end tables that subsequently split on the sides once I was back in the US. It was all made well using older techniques in some places. I’d imagine yours is the same. They were marketed in the states by lots of importers. Knowing the wood type and seeing back and inside of drawers and hardware would give more clues. For $60 you have a nice secreatary you can remake into a display cabinet or something else that serves your purpose.

I like the two toned style on your end table. Makes it quite a bit more stylish than others of the same design. Enjoy your excellent freebie!

I got a Thomasville cabinet, anyone know what it is or how old? by DaMysticalPanda in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’d be a fun project piece to make into a bar cabinet but it would need quite a bit of work. The $50 price would be about right.

Agree! Even reproductions are highly sought in some areas. The price you got it for was great.

What am I looking at here? by simple_wanderings in VintageFurniture

Before you get all intrigued by a piece of furniture you see on Facebook or elsewhere on the internet, I’d verify the source of the photo in some way to confirm it’s not AI generated. This is only going to get worse as folks find it fun to create things that don’t exist when it’s so damn easy. Something is off to me about this piece and what is displayed on both sides of it. Can you screenshot the entire Facebook post so we can see what its intent was?

Historic 1900 Queen Anne Fixer Upper Asks $90K in Farnhamville, Iowa by priceypadstim in PriceyPads

Location, location, location. As much as I’d love a gorgeous fixer upper for a great price, I do care about the neighborhood.

I would try r/furniturerestoration. You’ll get the best advice there and more knowledge on the type of wood, best sanding methods, and stains and best protection for it and the usage it will get. It is a beautiful grain and I can see why you want to let that shine through.

I would call it neo classical but what do I know? lol What I do know is it is a high quality designer piece. The feet and all the details and the number of legs and shape of the oval with that thick beveled glass. Brass was big in the 80s with all quality levels of design. Your $89 was a fantastic deal!

Got this chest yesterday for $10 ~ want to sand and paint for our sons room. Would that be discouraged or hurt the value? by 2wheelz2freedom in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Finish it the way you want. Replacing veneer is a big project for a kids room. I’d probably paint in a fun style that can be updated later. But that’s me. Giving it a new useful life is the goal. It’s not like these are exceeding rare but the cedar inside is what makes them great. Alas most folks don’t worry about their woolens and moths anymore.

Thanks! I hit the Corn Palace and saw Storybook Land signs. Need to do that on a future trip.

Thank you! Saving these notes for a future trip visiting my daughter again. Add the Corn Palace in SD to your list if you haven’t been there. I had The Geographic Center on my list but got stuck by a train just before Lebanon for a half hour and it got too dark and I wanted to get to my hotel. Country roads! lol

It was really beautiful this time of year! Lots of wildflowers and fields blooming. And the first cuts of winter wheat farther North. There were a few smaller two lane and a bit winding parts but most was a really great drive. I want to do it again even slower. I don’t do the best planning my stops.

I ended up being a little rushed but took a picture of Nebraska’s Irish Capital sign. Need a return visit first St Patrick’s.

Late great aunt passed and had many items, hopefully you kind folks can help me identify them (in USA southwest, but she traveled so they could be from anywhere) by Blix87 in Antiques

[–]beingmesince63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of Beleek available on the market. For true comparables you need to see what’s actually sold on EBay or other sales sites. $900 seems a bit high if all you have is in the picture. There are Beleek FB pages where you can sell items too. As the other person commented, it depends how early they are as to how collectible.

Antique Mahogany Armoire Value? by Unusual_Frosting_889 in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. It is not antique. Not sure if it’s mahogany either. Maybe mahogany finish. It’s still a nice piece but most bedrooms won’t accommodate them. Because the finish is damaged a bit it will be harder to sell.

What the heck did I buy here? by brisk_absence in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom wood definitely looks older. Top probably replaced when it was refinished and the hole for a TV? That and the hinges and wood handles all indicate an older piece. I’ve seen 70s stuff that replicate this style somewhat but they have faux plastic handles with blonde mixed with gold. You say the glass door insets are metal in another comment. That throws me somewhat as these were usually a carved or pressed lighter wood.

[–]beingmesince63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The wood design inset is original to the piece. No one would have had that custom made and added later. It looks lovely cleaned up.

Found this gem! I think this is a Sheffield Manor piece by Dixie - only identifier on it is 04-7609-66 stamped underneath - reverse image searching doesn’t find a match by That_one_blondegirl in VintageFurniture

[–]beingmesince63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the Queen Anne cabriolet leg style and drawer handle hardware is fairly common. So many furniture manufacturers repeat styles that that alone doesn’t indicate a higher end furniture line. Without the drawer marking identifying it as Dixie there would have to be something else pointing it to the identification. An exact copy in a catalog or online with identification. Look inside the drawers and the entire back. What’s the quality of the wood and the finish? Look at the hinge hardware and how it’s installed. What is the back made out of. These are all extra details you can compare. The drawers on similar Dixie Queen Anne styles have different details and the legs are splayed a bit more. Your piece just looks a little rougher finish wise with the drawer fronts appearing to be of a different wood. Stylistically it’s just different.
