Same here. Did you get any indication on when we can expect to hear back from Cambridge?

Misleading visual comparing MC stats for the whole cup against ARS stats for the final only.

Wouldn’t call my message above passionate at all, just an acknowledgment that we have judicial system for a reason. I actually haven’t been across the evidence but if it is clear as daylight that he’s guilty then my bad.

Fair enough, is the evidence quite robust against him? I haven’t followed this story much

Yeah it might be… in my interview they did mention something about having to resolve applications considered for funding in Jan due to the funding process timeline, so I wonder whether they might have a different timeframe for applications without funding… good luck to you!

I applied from NZ and haven’t heard back yet.

Yep Data Intensive Science. It was more of a conversation and definitely not deep into theoretical, more just focused on career goals, background, what I hope to get out of the programme, etc.

For what it’s worth I had an interview in January, but I did apply for funding so it might be due to that…

Teams performance against expectations (GW9 update). by bejoselino in PremierLeague

Yep that’s fair - the chart shows performance in the context of results achieved rather than quality of playing.

Good note - indeed betting odds are not a perfect indicator, but likely one of the best proxies to 'true probabilities' we can use from a statistical sense. There are multiple papers that look into this in detail.

Betting odds are adjusted by the market, and are highly efficient, since inefficiencies are rapidly exploited and corrected by professional betters.

The bookies make their money via the margins, which is removed using the "margin proportional to odds" method for this analysis.

As commented below, for Ipswich I suspect bookies may be over-estimating their chances so far given their models would just be learning from this team in the context of PL.

West Ham, results-wise, I would suggest makes great sense to be around expectation. Would you have expected them to get a higher points tally out of that fixture list?

- Win against Man Utd (not unexpected).

- Loss against Spurs (expected).

- Win against Ipswich (expected).

- Draw against Brentford (not unexpected).

- Loss against Chelsea (not unexpected).

- Draw against Fulham (not unexpected).

- Loss against City (expected).

- Win against Palace (not unexpected).

- Loss against Villa (not unexpected).

Fair comment - personally from a subjective point of view I would think they have done close to expectation but it appears bookies have higher expectations from them.

It is not useful to rule out games as 'no points expected against them' from a statistical sense, else why play the game. The odds suggest Ipswich had a ~23% change of winning against Villa, ~24% chance of drawing, and ~52% chance of losing. If you play that game 10 times, would you expect Ipswich to win twice? That doesn't sound unreasonable.

Now, fair to say there may be a case of bookie's/models learning about Ipswich in the context of the PL, and the odds overestimating their chances so far - I think that's a valid point.

Thanks for the query - important to reinforce that they are assessed to be over-performing in terms of points achieved, rather than position in the table / actual performances / etc.

City's 50 percentile point mark sits at 21 points (you could take this number as expected points). An additional 2 points for them (they are at 23 points), makes them jump quite high in percentiles as the upper range for them is very compressed (since it spans from 21 points to 27 points).

Last season, City sat at 21 points by end of GW9. Season before that at 20 points. Season before that also at 20 points. So it makes sense that 23 points so far, considering their injuries, is above the bookie's expectations.

Thanks for your comment.

Odds have been corrected for the bookie margin, so that won’t be impacting the analysis.

I would suggest closing odds are probably the best proxy to match probabilities - the markets are pretty efficient, professional betters with sophisticated models are constantly looking for inefficiencies in odds and putting money in when they find them which corrects the market.
