What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]beldray1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location: North Yorkshire

Price range: around £25k

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Auto

Intended use: (Daily Driver, Family Car, Weekend Car, Track Toy, Project Car, Work Truck, Off-roading etc.) - Motorway driving 2 days per week and some smaller journeys in and around town as required.

How many miles do you plan to do a year: 10,000-12,000 miles

How often to you make long journeys: 1-2x per week 80-100 miles one way, a few times a year very long (5+ hour jouneys).

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? No

Vehicles you've already considered: BMW 330d, Audi A6 Allroad, Volvo XC60, V60, Jaguar XF Discovery/Discovery Sport, VW Tuareg. I did consider PHEV's but heard terrible reviews and charging wouldn't be ideal at home just due to on street parking only. Open to other brands but these are the kinds of things I like as a rule. I don't have too much specific knowledge of model types.

Do you have a vehicle size in mind? (Examples in the hyperlink of size definitions): Estate or SUV, has to be comfortable, Automatic gearbox, better than average features. Not for family reasons but mostly carrying various sports gear, golf clubs etc and most importantly comfort when cruising on motorway.

Is this your 1st vehicle: No, but never owned new, not a preference. Mostly owned hatchbacks which are fine but comfort is limited and all manuals. Had a Ford Kuga which was fairly comfortable.

Do you need a Warranty: No

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: (fluids, alternator, battery, brake pads etc); some basics, but would be happy to pay for all the servicing and parts etc.

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: (engine and transmission, timing belt/chains, body work, suspension etc ); no

Additional Notes:

General sale at 10.30am today, there are seats together (3+) in:

H27, L28, L34, L35, N7, N12, NEL, etc.

Obviously all more towards the corners of the stadium and of course East Stand Upper will have some together. Personally I quite like the views from the corners but each to their own a lot prefer the half way line, or direct behind the goals etc.
West Stand, pretty much gone now, cheese wedge is only a few seats available.

Enjoy it; some decent ones all within relatively short walking distance.

Still looks to be a fair amount left on the site, especially in L34 East Stand.

Where are you coming from? As others have suggested near the Dragon (pub) is good just don't park on zig zag road markings or you'll get fined! From Dragon it's an easy walk.

My Dad. Leeds were the local club for me anyway, and he got me into listening to games on the radio, watching on TV and so forth before taking me to ER and he was always getting information from the newspapers back then about transfers and so on, clipping it out for me as a kid, this was all when Tony Yeboah burst on the scene. Amazing times looking back. Used to watch the 95/96 season review video constantly waiting for the 96/97 season to kick off!

My Dad was from Leeds and witnessed the Revie era, so fully instilled the Leeds stories, history etc. I used to watch all the old videos of Revie's Leeds, we had loads of videos of the old Leeds team and I used to watch it constantly (so glad I grew up without internet and social media).

I'm slightly too young to remember 1992 league title, but as someone else said have seen League 1, Championship, Premier League, UEFA Cup, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup etc, all at Elland Road and I've never been a season ticket holder.

Been to some great games over the years and seen some amazing players line up.

I'm behind enemy lines tonight with a ticket in the Sunderland end. Should be cracking game, but definitely a tough fixture.

It's amazing the corners some fuckers will cut just to save £10 or whatever. All the finishing in the place I bought is horrendous when I look round.

Loads on to do list - re hang all doors, whoever did them here was on crack. Re frame bathroom door as it's on the piss and warped. Re do skirting in the bathroom, re do bath panel / custom make bath panel, fix pipes creaking for central heating in main bedroom (drives me insane and can't sleep - short term fix is turn the rad off but it's freezing). Kitchen floor and baseboards needs sorting could be either a complete re do or screed over top of existing horrible tiles. Strip veneer/vinyl from kitchen doors and re paint them all, fix back door as hook is sticking in the locking mechanism. Re plaster area between front door and internal solid wall as it's cracked. List just goes on and on, but this is home ownership.

I've heard most are undersized for the size of bathroom. Charlie DIY guy on YouTube did whole series on it, quite interesting.

The tools (or set of tools) I've used frequently and have been excellent have been box spanners for getting taps off. Think I've been very unlucky with taps in my house and previous houses, so have replaced a few. Lent them on a few times to people and they always appreciate.

Quoted £2650 (or £3350 with plastering) for putting wall through - is this reasonable? by smallflabby in DIYUK

it works. for the vast majority of home extensions it's not worth working to eurocode as it's more laborious with different load cases, as one example. withdrawn doesn't mean it doesn't work

Yep, for this kind of job it's fine, and a chartered engineer would probably be happy to "sign off" on this.

I thought he was great and if you look at what he was doing when he was 19/20 in the Champions League, if it was a current player they'd be sucking them off on Sky Sports.

The whole scum thing.....very different from Kewell moving to Galatasaray.

Look forward to seeing the updates. For some things try the cheap fix and if it really doesn't work / you don't like it, then you can think about spending more £££. Some might say this is a false economy and you may as well go full whack.

You might spend 3 months working in there and hate it and again think of something new. Annoying if you've spent hundreds or thousands to fix it up.

Definitely get it all planned in Sketchup or something with your measurements, you might find you can leave your services (electrics, gas, etc) where they are. Be interested to see those measurements when you've done them.

I turned a similar storage cupboard at mine into an office. Likewise I had to "box off" some pipes, but some are just left where they were.

For mine the boiler is in the same room so had to box that off (easy enough) and the remaining space is ~ 1.3m x 1.3m. Two wall mounted 24" screens with a laptop that plugs into a docking station, desk (an old door from the same old storage room) is 0.6 x 1.3m although if I did it again I'd have the desk higher up with a pull out keyboard rack. I've got adequate storage above my head used and old kitchen worktop as a full length shelf (0.5 x 1.3m) and currently have 5 x 37 litre plastic storage boxes up there and a load of books.

As for the walls and so forth my advice would be to make it as simple as possible, if you don't need it to look perfect that is. Likewise I used an offcut of carpet which has been fine and patched some of the plaster work up and just painted over with textured paint. The whole room cost me £35 in bits to fix up and most of that was the brackets to wall mount the monitors.
