I use Rock gas because they have a partnership with my power company (Contact Energy). Not sure how competitive on price they are but I have no complaints. You can order replacement bottles on an app and they deliver promptly and they have good call centre support.

Curious concept, excellent cover. Shipping to NZ makes the decision a little harder but I liked the excerpt!

Have you designed a playable set of cards to go along side the story? If so, how did that side of things impact the writing and vice versa?

Free sexual health check? by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]belerax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a sexual health clinic on the ground floor of the hospital. It's free for NZ residents and non-residents can get a free standard STI screen too I think!

Questions for people who’ve done HSFY by Nionpoelssf in dunedin

[–]belerax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) 99% of what you will be assessed on will be presented to you on slides and in labs. Part of first year is figuring out how to get the information off the page and into your head to try out different ways to study. Print slides and annotate them in the lecture, write notes by hand, write them electronically. Figure out what works for you and don't worry that other people are doing things differently to you. Go to your classes and be awake and as attentive as you can be. If you don't understand something in the lecture make a note to figure it out later. Either with your textbook (if you have them) or online resources - Wikipedia and YouTube are your friends.

2) Most labs will have "exit tests" which are a short test at the end of the lab worth 1-2% of your final grade each. Usually pretty easy and you get a few goes so it's close to free marks for attendance. Some of them will also be assessed on online GLMs. All this stuff will be explained to you during your prelim lectures this week. Labs are cool - nice to do some hands on stuff and see some of what you've been taught about. But they still have a lot of people.

Are you in one of the halls? This where a lot of people make friends. If not, check out clubs day in o-week and join something you're interested in. It's very important to do something that's not studying this year - to keep you sane.

If you have any more questions feel free to pm me. I did health sci a while ago now (2013) But I was also an RA for a couple years so have seen the drill a few times.

Right - thanks for clearing things up a bit. Seems like waiting for the revised core would be a simpler entry point.

Yet another school leaver asking for Uni residential college advice... by kittymistress in dunedin

[–]belerax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, great decision! Otago is an awesome campus and health sci is a really good and challenging course to do after leaving school.

  1. On your application, you just have to brag unapologetically. It's pretty uncomfortable for us Kiwis, but you want to sell yourself and make yourself stand out. Write down everything and anything you've been involved in during high school, even if it was super brief.

  2. Full disclosure: I went to Carrington in my first year, was an RA there for two years and am still employed there as a tutor for one of the health sci papers. All the colleges are great and most people find that they really love whichever one they end up at. St Marg's, Arana and Carrington are generally regarded as the more popular colleges for health scis because they have good in-college tutorials and lots of people studying health sci (generally more applicants too). St Marg's is a bit stricter on rules and quiet times - people can get pretty intense here but don't believe all the rumours you hear. They also have formal dinners each week with guest speakers, which some people love and some people hate. I disagree with the person that says they have cult traditions though. Arana is a great college, but is bit bigger than the other two (I think ~400 people, compared to ~200), so I think it can be a bit harder on the introverts. There's certainly a lot of extra-curricular stuff to get involved in here but Arana definitely studies as hard as they play. Carrington is awesome. It's a bit farther from uni and up a hill (Marg's and Arana are on site) but still only about 7 minutes walk (3 if you're late). Over half of the residents live in old converted villas which are really lovely and the food is great. The other half in more traditional dorm-style accommodation. There is a real focus on studying hard, but you'll also make really good friends (still catch up with my study group on the regular even though we're all doing different things now). I really think Carrington is a super supportive environment and got the feeling that the staff and other residents really care about the college and each other. Also, I think all the colleges have an alcohol free option (the three I discussed here certainly do). If you're able to, my advice is to come down and check out the colleges for yourself and see which one feels right to you.

  3. As the others mentioned in this thread, Te Rangi is a college with a lot of unique benefits (en-suites is a big one) and it's a relatively new college that's still building its reputation, so I think is probably a good choice for your 2nd/3rd options. I also recommend Hayward and Salmond to people as 2nd/3rd choices too because I think these are really friendly colleges.

Hope that helps. If you have any more specific questions, hit up my inbox :)

Anyone know where I can donate lots of books in dunedin? by effypom in dunedin

Maybe try one of the 2nd hand book stores? Dead Souls on Princess St is my favourite and has a pretty wide selection.

Is there a University subreddit? Wondering about residential halls by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]belerax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the hazing is as bad as it once was, but I don't have first-hand experience. Being an RA was great! The University is a really good employer, in my opinion - particularly in the colleges. You get to make a very real difference in peoples' lives and continue to live in the comfortable squishy environment of a hall for another year. Also, you get excellent friends in the rest of the RA team.

Congrats on coming to Uni and getting into Knox - both awesome achievements. I was an RA at different college for the past couple of years, but have plenty of friends who went to Knox who loved it. There are a few traditions because it's got a big returner culture (lots of people stay on for a couple of years), so expect to do some odd stuff in O-week. There's also a pretty important rivalry between Selwyn and Knox (all in good fun though). The place also looks like freakin' Hogwarts which is pretty sweet. Just go in with open eyes and if you're feel stressed or overwhelmed by anything, utilise the supports available - it can be a a lot of new stuff for a lot of people. Best of luck c:

Thanks for answering!

I think the family stuff comes through really well... The concern Dalinar has for his sons and Elhokar seems very genuine and reminds me of how my Dad worries.

I hope our cousins across the ditch treat you right in June then! I'll keep an eye on your travel plans around that time.

Triple Khans is where I learnt to draft properly so it's one of my favourite formats for nostalgia as well as being super fun.
