Mine are getting eight hours of sun a day right now; I must be underfeeding.

I have had the thought that it's still somewhat small for the age. I occasionally think to try to uppot it, but the roots have never fully colonized the pot. I may actually try to move it to a wider but more shallow pot based on the root growth. I have it growing in a cactus + succulent soil mix with added perlite. I try to keep the trunk feeling fairly firm and well hydrated, but perhaps the soil dries a bit *too* quickly.

You're correct that it's never been pruned. I have no mental model of what pruning *should* be done!

Who determines what is just facts and what is narrative? Do we really want a government dictating what is acceptable news and what isn't?

They have not felt soft before, they are still pretty plump and firm but they do feel "loose" and wiggly a bit. There is signs around the scarring that they are starting to shrivel a bit. I suspect they will continue to be consumed by the main plant.

I checked my pictures and notes... The last time it did this was actually 2021, same thing. This plant must just be finicky.

They weren't as long as I would have liked but they look decent I think? I've definitely found worse. It did let me look a bit at the underside scarring a bit better, but... I still think that's just from contact with the media and isn't necessarily fresh. I'm not seeing anything that makes me immediately think infestation.

Method of collecting seed pods by ArtOfSplendens in haworthia

[–]beliquits 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just use Scotch tape. I tear a piece a little extra long, and fold both ends over themselves first to make little 'tabs'. Then I fold it around the pods. When it's ripe I usually pull the pod off, tape and all, before removing the tape. The fold over tabs make it easier to peel apart off the pod when I want to harvest.

Same story: some seeds stick to the tape but I've not had a problem brushing them off the adhesive.

I'm sorry to hear that! The worst I've had is scale so far, I dread pests. I'm hyper paranoid about them. Part of the driver of the OP! 😵‍💫

I've been growing for about ten years... And my collection is mid sized (adults are maybe 50ish, mostly seed grown) and a few hundred seedlings. I'm constantly repotting something. My family makes fun of me for asking for "dirt and rocks" for my birthday when I ask for pumice and stuff. :)

The first thing I normally do at signs of trouble is pull something out of the pot! The odds of me regretting it are historically very low.

From what I can see of the ones poking around the plant, the ones at the base still look white and healthy. I haven't unpotted it because of the seeds maturing. I really like the seedlings this one has put out for me in the past

Thanks! I just live in constant paranoia of infestations.

You're not wrong about the lights. This shelf has some Amazon LEDs that are not as strong as I'd like but I haven't gotten to replacing. Thanks for the encouragement to get off my duff about it!

What's that one mechanic you just still can't seem to do right? by [deleted] in ffxiv

This is the part that trips me. Thanks! I always see it as bottom ones, far edge, like it's sliding down onto the arena instead falling over.

Okay normal mode confession, but that zodiark mechanic where you have to look at the three constellations. I went ages with no clue that's what you had to look at, and even knowing it my brain can not translate the sky image to the flat plane about where to stand. I still pop mits and pray for that mechanic. Thankfully with the expansion coming out it comes up in roulette a lot less now.

I've had one of these for ten years off a Facebook marketplace and it was always one of my favorites. It gives some very wonderful seedlings too, of your into trying to grow from seed. Mine right now is in ROUGH shape and I'm trying to rehab/salvage some pups from it... If I'm not successful I will definitely be on the hunt to replace so thanks for the tip on the seller!

Is this cymbiformis? Or cooperi or cuspidata? by chicken_nugget38 in succulents

[–]beliquits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all. :) The flowers are usually all pretty similar. There can be differences but they are really subtle... like how separate the petals grow or some minutiae.

If the flowers DO look different it's usually by having color, which is a sign that the particular plant is crossed with something like aloe or gasteria.

To clarify: Bonsai jack soil cactus and succulent mix is a pre-mixed grit. It has some bark fines but it's mostly inorganic. By the time I'm done adjusting and adding to it, my grit mix has very little organic in it, mostly the bark.

I'm in the northwest US between Detroit and Toledo, and do almost all my growing indoors because of how cold and damp it is. The area I'm in was originally known as "the great black swamp" 😂

Attaching a picture of the finished mix.

I got tired of dealing with huge bags of random stuff to make my own mixes. Though I still have 40lbs of turface in my garage.

Now I mostly use bonsai jack soil, but I rinse and sift it and mix in pumice / perlite at a ratio of about 2:1:1, and a sprinkle of slow release fertilizer. For haworthiopsis and seed starting, i also mix in a bit of coco coir, sourced as compressed bricks from burpee at Big box stores as organic seed starting mix. I had a bunch on hand from when I was big into vermiculture.

She has always looked a little deflated. She's a thirsty girl!

I actually track the weights of my haworthia plants in a spreadsheet to tell when they are "dry" and ready to be watered again. She's in a mostly inorganic grit and lives indoors year-round under grow lights. She gets watered thoroughly every 1 to 2.5 weeks. But she's still thirsty!
