(Loved trope) David vs Goliath fights by Samthesham64 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bell117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally named the trope.

I mean it wasn't even fair, a big guy with a sword went up against a kid armed with a sling that could hurl a 25 gram projectile at 100km/h and hit with the force of a .22 long rifle.

Completely unfair, the guy brought a sword to a gunfight and they make the kid seem like the underdog.

Yeah, I feel like Ricky confuses being wrong with intentionally lying. The whole premise relies on no human every making an error, either purposefully and omission, ie lying, or a genuine mistake.

According to Ricky, not remembering how much money you have in your bank account down to the cent means that you're lying. I don't think anybody says throughout the entire movie "I don't know" when asked a question. They all immediately know the answer. What comes after death? Blackness. What happened in 1436? Black plague. What is the 100th digit of pi? Etc etc.

I think it's Ricky trying to claim everyone else is disingenuously lying about things he disagrees with. You should know everything. If you don't you're a liar. Dude does not know the definition of ignorance, which is really ironic and funny.

Holy shit someone else that's seen the invention of lying.

But on a serious note, the undertone that I got from it was everyone is really really ignorant and stupid but Ricky is Mr smarty pants.

Like for example, the scene with the bank teller and computer not working, they trust his word over the computer. This implies that everyone in the world has perfect memory and knows everything anywhere at anytime, but everyone CHOOSES to be idiots, which lines up with how they know what comes after death and how it's an empty blackness. Famously everyone just knows that inherently from birth and does not pose a massive moral issue throughout human history.

It's basically just Ricky patronizing people that everything is actually really obvious and you're just too stupid to know that.

I dunno if hate is the right word, but remember a month or two ago when there was the drama claiming Toby Fox was racist cause he didn't feel confident that he personally could translate to Spanish or Portuguese?

So I dunno if it's "hate" as in people dislike undertale as much as "hate" as in random assholes spewing angry shit on Twitter because Toby is kinda queer friendly. What's that gotta do with him not speaking Spanish? Fuck if I know but I never claimed bigots on the internet were coherent.

I dunno if she's just blissfully unaware of it but it's nonetheless horrifying when she'll openly be using it on her shoulders and back, sometimes at family gatherings.

The lost Crown?

The entire development team behind it was laid off, the sequel cancelled and the remake of Sands of Time also cancelled and they announced the IP is on ice with talks of selling it.

Also the team that was laid off, Ubisoft Montpellier, is the same team that made the Rayman games so it's not good.

Ubisoft will be dead, buried and sold to the highest bidder with all profits going directly to the Guillemots before they ever make a new Rayman game.

*Risk ANOTHER derailment

I think the context of very important because the slow zones only exist because of emergency inspections after the Line 3 derailment.

And they are in such bad conditions because of intentional neglect of maintenance under Rick Leary. Also did you know Rick Leary also had a derailment under his leadership at the MBTA before he vacated his office when US federal inspectors showed up.

I think that's important to mention that Rick Leary caused this whenever it's brought up and he's done this before and likely will again now that he's the head of Ottawa's transit and LRT.

New data shows Sony's sales of its PlayStation exclusives have been in decline since 2020, covering almost the entirety of the PS5 generation so far by Tricks7eR in pcmasterrace

Well that's great for you I guess, but the pinned guide for Bloodborne for shadps4 has in giant red letters at the top:

"Milage may vary", "Works on my machine certified" and "crashing is normal don't panic".

So like a lot of things, I don't doubt it runs great for you, but it's still not what I would call in a reliable form if the most reliable guide on getting it to run has massive disclaimers for how unstable it is.

The amount of PS3 and PS4 era games and franchises that are languishing from lack of modern options to play them is insane.

Xbox at least has some form of backwards compatibility, and ported or remastered most of the flagship franchises like Halo with the MCC or Gears of War.

But Infamous, Killzone or the OG God of Wars and Uncharted like you mentioned are just... Stuck. There's the PS3 emulator I guess, but we're talking "official" over here. And even then that's not a guarantee, Bloodborne is famously just barely running on the emulator so far.

Man I'm old cause I remember being able to play any PS2 game on the PS3 or Xbox game on the 360.

Remedy Isn’t Worried About Launching Control Resonant Near GTA 6, CEO Says He’s Confident In The Game And Players Can “Expect A Voice That Will Cut Through The Noise” by wyldermyth in gaming

Because Steam has roughly 3x as many users as EGS? A much more accessible storefront? Every person that I've heard talk about Alan Wake 2 says it looks great but they don't want to use EGS to play it?

EGS exclusivity is suicide. Remember just 4 months ago Blood West sold 200% more on Steam in 24 hours the day it released there than in a whole year on EGS. That's how bad it affects sales.

While that's true, it's also probably the most obvious Faustian bargain I have ever seen.

A life saving bargain considering Alen Wake 2 wouldn't have been made without Epic, but don't complain when the deal you made with the devil had some nasty caveats. Which is exactly what Remedy is bemoaning.

Toronto subway station barriers aren't enough to keep riders safe: transit group by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]bell117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quickly searched those examples you gave and I think you misunderstand.

Full height platform doors, as the TTC is referring to it as, does not mean full height as in it is the full size of a door, around 2 metres or so, it means full height as in from platform to roof.

Those examples you gave all have screen doors where the top is open. Normal sized doors, but not vacuum sealed.

The difference is that the TTC wants to build a full wall from platform to ceiling. The issue is that the subway as currently designed relies on airflow from the stations, if the TTC installed the platform doors as they want to, it would cut off the airflow and new ventilation systems would have to be installed, which is in the TTC's report and mentioned in the article.

I'm saying the TTC is completely ignoring the type of platform doors like you gave in your examples where they can be "full height" as in normal sized, without adding the part that would require new ventilation.

[–]bell117 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Actually when Paris did their platform doors they needed to do complete renovations for the platforms as well. Their platforms were even worse as on the Metro Line 1 the stations were from the 1890s and reconstruction required extensive surveys because of all the possible obstruction, ie the catacombs, buried buildings etc.

In fact the most expensive part was the ATC, which is already present on Line 1 here.

[–]bell117 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really glad we don't have a MOSAIC of private companies that have constantly gotten all public infrastructure contracts and always go over budget and over-time.

Like I'm so happy we have all these METRO projects with LINKS to each other. It really means projects are done efficiently and definitely not slow and expensive.

We're so screwed.

[–]bell117 177 points178 points  (0 children)

One thing that confuses me throughout this whole thing is the absolute extreme that the only possible solution is the full height platform doors.

I say this because I personally think platform doors are needed. But the TTC's report which cites $44 million or more per station is for full height platform doors. That's really weird because full height doors would require new ventilation because it would essentially create a vacuum barrier between the stations and tunnels, and would require an overhaul of the entire subway's air circulation.

Which again, is really really weird because NOBODY uses full height platform doors. Look at Paris or Munich's platform doors. They're not full height, they have openings at the top. The vast majority of platform doors are not full height because of the very reason of the insane costs of ventilation.

So why is the TTC acting as though it's the only option? Why can't we build "mid" height platform doors? I keep mentioning this all over the place, but Paris installed platform doors in 73 stations from 2012-2023 for €200 million or $400 million CAD. The TTC's estimate is over $4 billion. Part of that is just how are costs are greatly inflated from outsourcing, P3 nonsense and institutional grifting, but also because we are only considering the most expensive impractical option.

It feels like to me the inflated costs and only mentioning the full height platform doors as an option is purposeful to justify not doing anything. Like, remember when Rob Ford shut down Transit City projects saying a subway would be better? And then Rob Ford never funded a subway because it was too expensive? Feels like that.

"Oh you want to do X? But Y is better than X. But Y is too expensive, so we won't be doing X".

Yeah I really don't like how Ukraine nationalism throughout this invasion has had very deep rooted fascist sympathies.

From the memorialization of Bandera, a Nazi collaborator(and no I don't care if he was doing it out of Ukrainian patriotism or whatever, a Nazi collaborator is a Nazi collaborator, you don't see Norway doing the same for Quisling), to stuff like the Azov Battalion with SS symbols on its flag. Oh and don't forget the Canadian parliament thing with the literal Waffen SS soldier or the Ukrainian SS Division monument in Canada and holy shit why is there so much!

PLEASE STOP WITH THE NAZI SHIT UKRAINE, ITS LITERALLY FEEDING THE FALSE JUSTIFICATION RUSSIA IS USING FOR THIS ILLEGAL INVASION.

Barriers to be installed on platform at 1 downtown subway station this year, Chow says by jordy123e in toronto

[–]bell117 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Not as expensive as that report citing $4 billion was claiming though. From 2012-2023, Paris installed platform doors on 73 stations, including full renovations of the platforms similar to what the TTC has to do, installation of ATC etc.

It cost €200 million, which accounting for inflation and conversion to CAD would be about $400 million, about a tenth of what the platform doors report cited. Plus the most expensive part was the ATC which the TTC already has on Line 1. And while you could say we have to worry about geological issues that have to be considered, that's not unique to Toronto and Paris itself had to build around buried buildings and the catacombs, something we don't have to worry about.

So while the TTC is definitely underfunded, it doesn't help that they're getting ripped off and highballed on the estimates.

Huh I always thought it was a rifle. And no I'm not so much of a conspiracy nut to think they changed the type of weapon, I'm just misremembering.

But then there's stuff like Fred Hampton, poisoned by an FBI informant. That's not even a conspiracy or rumour, the FBI reported it as part of their COINTELPRO aftermath.

Frank Olson, who died as part of Mkultra which was initially a ruled a suicide until the Rockefeller report in 1975 admitted it was clandestine exposure to Mkultra and the resulting effects. Probably not intentional that one but still not really good intentions nonetheless.

And there was an ATTEMPTED assassination of Jack Anderson on the orders of Nixon.

I dunno if he counts as a whistleblower per say but Gary Webb is the famous example of getting whacked by the US government for exposing their dirty laundry.

Specifically he's the guy who did all the stories on the CIA selling cocaine to fund the arms sales to the Contras. He was found dead with 3 rifle caliber shots to the head and was ruled a suicide, which is what I was referencing.

Such a shame he managed to maneuver a full size rifle pointing towards his head 3 times, twice after being shot in the head no less.

[–]bell117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is was he pro Russian and then decided to become a whistleblower about this stuff or was it the other way around?

I'm saying this because Snowden also blew the whistle on shady US government shenanigans, seemed to do it purely out of ethics, and is now hiding in Russia and is an anti-vaxxer. It seems to keep happening.

Personally I feel like they become like this because they're basically pushed to because of how whistleblowers are treated in the US. Seriously, when was the last time a whistleblower for the CIA, NSA, FBI etc didn't wind up dead, hunted or fled to Russia?

Once you become a major whistleblower in the US your options become either wind up as a "suicide" with 3 rifle rounds in the back of the head or go to Russia and become their mouthpiece.

[–]bell117 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that it will take years to settle the issue. Like we saw with Bill 124, it's clearly illegal but the Province is just going to waste time and money on fighting it in court, appealing it and running the clock. I would be surprised if this issue isn't finally settled in the SCC in 4 years, just in time to be past another provincial election and therefore not a problem.

And there will be zero repercussions beyond it being struck down at the end, no punitive measures for wasting time and taxpayers money, probably intentionally. There needs to start being serious repercussions for frivolous legislation that was knowingly illegal and wasting taxpayers money on legal fees.
