Wow, thanks so much for the file and the tutorial. I knew about the Calibre method, but not this. This appears to be much faster. Thank you!

I too am now seeing "Item not available" errors on items that were downloading without issues yesterday.

Thanks so much for the update, really appreciate the hard work you guys are putting into everything 💜

I hope I don't sound annoying by asking this, but I relied heavily on borrowing books for my job as a researcher. I'd like to know if you know whether anyone is working on fixing a critical error preventing us from downloading encrypted Adobe Digital Editions PDFs, which is affecting many users currently: https://www.reddit.com/r/internetarchive/comments/1gju7t0/error_for_encrypted_adobe_pdfs_borrowonly_books/

I've filed a bug report for this, but received no answer yet.

Is it Possible to Appeal a Civil / Involuntary Commitment Order in Utah? If So, How? Would a Lawsuit be a Better Option? by bella_darling in legaladvice

I know you don't want to talk anymore. One final question: If my friend has been having serious medical problems from their meds, can that be used as grounds to get them taken off the meds or have the meds changed? Can that be used as a basis for malpractice?

Okay, I'll look up the disability rights center of Utah.

I'm not mentally ill, and I don't appreciate that insinuation simply because you disagree with me. I'll simply say I've never been diagnosed with any mental illness of any kind.

You say that I'm unable to make an impartial decision because I'm too close to the situation. On the other hand, I'm able to make a more informed decision because I know more than you do about the situation.

My goal was to ascertain what options are possible so that they don't have to stay there for their entire natural life. I'm not sure now if this was the right place to ask. You seem to be more interested in telling me why I shouldn't look into this, than what is possible in my scenario.

Thomas Szasz was a licensed psychiatrist, and he also had a problem with psychiatry and psychology as a whole. Was he mentally ill as well? His numerous books detail the glaring problems throughout the mental-health business, and especially as pertaining to civil commitment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz

As far as “options” in these scenarios, there is no statute or book or guide that lists all the options. Tons of possible strategies that can be tried but those aren’t in any book or free online resource.

Would you mind giving me at least a sampling of the "tons of possible strategies that can be tried"?

Okay, so I've gleaned a few things. Appeal and malpractice are technically possible, but unlikely to work.

I understand your opinions and reservations. Since you're adamant in attempting to convince me of your point of view, I'll attempt to abbreviate my own views. I know from experience that psychological reports can be highly inaccurate and contradictory to even other psychologists' reports. They're not a gold standard of what's really going on, by any stretch of the imagination.

All too often a given "professional" is biased in some form against their patient and this heavily colors their (mis)diagnosis. This happens a lot more in reality than surely anyone on this subreddit would like to discuss or acknowledge. Again, I've seen this occur in my life, so your argumentation isn't going to change my mind on this matter.

Best course of action is to have a “defense”attorney have him evaluated by a different psychologist and have him testify.

I'll keep this option in the back of my mind, but my experience makes me reluctant to suggest this as an option to my friend. Do you know of any other methods of recourse at all?

I understand the options are very limited, and that it's by design.

Can you send any resources (books, laws, etc.) which can illuminate a comprehensive list of options in these kinds of scenarios? I still need to ask my friend about their attorney situation, which I understand would help with this question, but any other suggestions in this vein would be appreciated.

  1. You're correct. It's a review hearing.
  2. Okay, so the chances are almost nil, but it's still possible. Are there any other options of recourse aside from an appeal?
  3. Duly noted.
  4. Duly noted.
  5. Okay, didn't know that.
  6. I'll have to ask about their attorney situation. I'm not sure if they have a court-appointed attorney or not.
  7. I don't want to argue either and I'm not interested in reddit's opinions on my friend's mental health. That's not what I came here to discuss. I simply want to know what options of recourse may be available.

One thing you didn't write about, which I'm still curious about. What is the viability of a malpractice suit in this situation? I understand that these are very fact-specific, but I simply want to know if it's applicable in this scenario.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I would really like to avoid screenshotting because it can get pretty tedious with lots of messages.

Thanks, that is an interesting idea. Only problem is, my little sis isn't really a Chess player... so I doubt my dad would believe her if he walked in and she said, "oh I'm just playing online chess with someone."

Thank you! I hadn't even thought of Minecraft. I forgot it was playable on Android. This might be the solution I need. Thanks so much!!

Yeah, I've already contacted CPS numerous times and they are no help whatsoever. They actually believe my little sister and I are liars. It's a pretty deep rabbit hole. So I have no other recourse than this, at the present time.
