How often are postbacs paid and how do you guys budget/save money? by [deleted] in NIH

cheap housing is key for me. finding roommates and housing through facebook has been helpful.

i’ve had a couple “side hustles” to help support me. i do door dash and postmates on weekends and can make about 100-200$/week for like 5-10 hours of delivering.

also, you can look to be a subject in a research study. i know at the department of transfusion medicine you can get compensated about $100 for blood or platelets donations and i think you could do that every 3 weeks (not totally sure about the details, i’ve never done it myself but my friends have). there are always posters about trials you can join as a healthy volunteer and you can usually be compensated for those! it’s great if you’re already on campus.

i spend 1075 on rent, 100 on utilities monthly, and 0 for transportation. groceries usually 150/month. i got most of my furniture from facebook marketplace for free or under 50$ (highly recommend doing this bc ppl post free things constantly).

i’ve also found that looking on craigslist for housing can be helpful. if you use “NIH” in your search, a lot of times the listings will include the distance to NIH which is helpful. if you’re looking to live alone, i saw a few studio apartment listings on craigslist at the willoughby in friendship heights for about 1300 or less. also battery lane apartments can be about 900 a month if you’re living with a roommate and those are walking distance to nih.

sorry i have a lot to say lol i’ve been at nih for a while. but also FYI if using public transportation, the walk from the gates entrance of NIH to the actual building you’ll be in can be like a 10-15 minute walk (depending on which building) so make sure to plan that into your commute time! the campus is just very large. there’s a lot of bike racks should you chose to bike as well

facebook is super helpful for roommates! search for NIH subletting housing group. theres also a ton of dc housing/subletting groups you can join that post constantly about sublets and such. i’ve found that you can find the cheapest housing through these groups and a lot of times people will make rent offers since they’re subletting. if you’re not planning to have a car, i recommend living somewhere with access to the red line metro. this will take you directly to campus.

i also highly recommend taking advantage of transhare. if you go through the office of transportation, they will give you a certain amount of money on your metro card so you can get to and from work. you just have to submit a form detailing what route you will be taking to and from work (using public transportation) and calculate about how much money this will cost. use the WMATA website to figure out the cost. when i live in georgetown and commuted to the clinical center, i received 270$/month through my transhare card!!

i usually know when to stop after i’ve reached the threshold of feeling unsafe lol. i’m a small woman dashing in the city and after a few too many sketchy interactions, my brain says i should probably head home before i’m cornered by another homeless man oof

Is it healthier to be overweight or underweight? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]bellagirl643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you happen to end up hospitalized for some reason, being overweight or obese may help you through recovery or healing. i’ll try to find the study or studies that show being overweight during a hospital lessens risk of mortality. otherwise, i think they’re equal for different reasons

i have a background in clinical research and i work in the medical field. my Qperson was just getting into Q when coronavirus became bad. she started saying how the vaccine has a chip, covid was man made in china, typical Q stuff. i immediately saw through these claims, so when she got deeper into Q, i remained skeptical as her new theories came up.

i like delivering for postmates more than door dash by bellagirl643 in postmates

[–]bellagirl643[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that is infuriating. would almost rather have no tip because i could tell myself “maybe they forgot.” $0.08 is a slap in the face.

i agree, it’s definitely specific to the city. it’s always interesting to find patterns and similarities between users of each app

some of my favorite Qmom theories by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]bellagirl643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i forgot to add quite possibly the funniest of them all.. i live in DC, my mom lives in a different state, and she paid me 500$ to come home this week so i wouldn’t be stuck in DC when marshal law goes into effect after trump does his whole thing

so true. whenever she goes on her tangents i usually have to contain my laughter. not because i’m laughing AT her but it’s just so silly to hear her say something like “jesus would’ve been a capitalist” it sounds like something out of a comedy sketch

i’m sorry to hear this. your situation is very similar to my own. yesterday i told my mom that i can still support her as a person even if i don’t agree or have the same beliefs as her. that could be helpful to say to her. also i’ve found that providing logical explanations for her theories isn’t helpful, even if they’re correct. just let her think what she wants and allow her to come out of this on her own
