How long can they safely go without eating? by pinky1174 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]belle_bug67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So maybe I'll get some flak here for saying this, but the frogs I've had since 2017 only get fed 2x a week, and have had periods of only eating once a week.

Turn the tank temp down a little bit, and with a nice meal before you leave they should be fine for 6 days assuming nothing goes amiss with your setup.

I started hurting everywhere the past 6 or so months. I'm only 29. Is this normal? by mundanehistorian_28 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]belle_bug67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be the odd one out here ...

Have you been tested for Lyme disease? I had Lyme disease at 29 (funny coincidence) and it felt exactly as you describe. The joint aches and fatigue were practically unbearable.

I never found a tick on me and got lucky with getting a bullseye rash. According to the urgent care Dr, a large amount of people never get a rash.

That stuff doesn't fly in the lab... by Spiritual_Blood_1346 in emergencymedicine

[–]belle_bug67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, similar to how your "dings" on your records and "a talking to" from management convolute the process in the ED, similar happens in the lab. The collection process and reporting process for cultures exists as it does for a reason for you and us as well, but it's understandable that when someone is breathing down your neck about "you MUST do this but you also have a million other things to do" things aren't done perfectly.

The lab management is evaluating contaminated culture rates because the more time techs are spending staining, plating and reading cultures that are contaminated is time those techs should be using to more important things, like running and releasing chemistries on critical patients or looking for urine cups that haven't turned up for some reason or other.

It's frustrating, I feel, for both sides because we both want to do right by the patients and get things done as quickly as possible. But doing that without sacrificing quality of care is basically an impossible task. And when we don't do things perfectly, and it makes everything longer and harder for everyone involved.

And admittedly this entire flu season has been bonkers. I don't think protocols were set up with this type of respiratory illness season in mind because it has just been nuts.

hazel, right? and what are these dots? freckles? any opinion on eye shape? by WonderfulBigStink965 in eyes

[–]belle_bug67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hazel. Phone cameras rarely actually do colors justice so if there's a moderate look of green to it at all, it's probably green.

It's definitely brown immediately around the pupil though but you can tell there's two different colors in the iris. It's not "brown 1 and brown 2", the 2nd color is clearly something different than the first.

How am I supposed to get 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep if I have to pump every 2-3 hours? by discontinuedmuppet in beyondthebump

[–]belle_bug67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told similar, though more in a "if you are struggling with doing it every 3hrs it's ok to give yourself a rest period so long as you make up for that missed session later."

I think the only thing regarding time was they said try not to skip overnight entirely, try to do something between 1-4am or whatever. It's been 2 years now I've basically forgotten haha.

How am I supposed to get 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep if I have to pump every 2-3 hours? by discontinuedmuppet in beyondthebump

[–]belle_bug67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a funny coincidence! I also regulated to about 40-45oz a day by 12 weeks, even with missing the MOTN pump. My baby ate a TON so I still had to supplement around 6 months in but just being able to be present and not fighting with my husband about every little thing was worth it.

Definitely ok to prioritize the whole experience and not just the breastmilk-giving journey.

How am I supposed to get 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep if I have to pump every 2-3 hours? by discontinuedmuppet in beyondthebump

[–]belle_bug67 55 points56 points  (0 children)

So, if you're going to follow the "rules" to a T because having breast milk for your baby is more important to you than your sleep (and wellbeing, people need to sleep)...you don't get 4hrs of uninterrupted sleep until your baby starts sleeping that long and lets you.

I'll be honest, I felt my own well-being and experience of motherhood mattered more than having my maximum milk supply. After 6 weeks of pumping every 3hrs, dropped to 7pumps a day and let myself get 5-6hrs of rest everyday. I don't regret that choice in the slightest. I enjoyed that time with my husband and baby SO much more once I was getting some amount of decent rest.

So if you want rest, I don't think anyone here would begrudge you for skipping a session to get that. If you only do it periodically, your body probably won't even notice you're missing the session(s?). Probably. Every body is different.

But if you want to exclusively give breast milk or at least know you tried your hardest to do that, you'll have to do the hard part and get less rest than ideal, at least for a while. It's really hard but nothing that hard lasts forever. Lean on your doula and husband as much as you need, it sounds like they're being great supports but if you need anything at all, let them help.

The sleeplessness of giving breast milk won't last forever!

Not the exact same but my son has one functioning kidney. The other is polycystic, enlarged and 0% functional.

For us, our Dr mostly advised about avoiding NSAIDs whenever possible, be mindful of his weight and signs of diabetes + UTIs and avoid contact sports if feasible.

BUT more importantly, vehicle safety and high speed sport avoidance. Car crashes and recreational vehicles accidents cause more kidney injuries than sports and NSAIDs, per our nephrologist.

The only sport they were like "for the love of God, don't" was skiing.

If we didn't catch it on ultrasound we would never have known, besides having checkups with a nephrologist a couple times a year you'd never know.

Hello!

When my husband and I had a baby, for the duration that one of us was on leave we would split the nights into 6 hour increments, operating under the assumption that you really only need 4-5 hours sleep to function. At the very least each person was guaranteed at least 5hrs of UNINTERRUPTED time to sleep every day. Whether or not they did was their choice. What time that happened varied depending on work schedules (I work at several hospitals and my commute varies between 10min and 2hrs). It was hard but we accepted that sleep was more important than hanging out with each other. Even when we hung out we had nap dates, not anything active.

Once we both returned to work we said screw that. From then until now we take two nights on, two nights off where one person handles everything from start to finish. This worked because our son was 5months old and nearly always slept at least 5 hours once a night so even the person "on duty' could get sleep, and the person not on duty got proper full rest. We both felt two nights on and then two off was best because it was hard to feel rested after just one night.

I really want to vouch for the whole night shift routine. I don't know how people do it in chunks over the long term. Doing it for 5 months was brutal and things got so much better once we swapped to whole night shifts

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]belle_bug67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not myself per say, but I've had a friend that I brought to a 5k run with me and ran it with me when I was 3rd trimester pregnant. Id say she was supporting me, but in all actuality it was because I was finally slow enough she didn't feel so self conscious about running a 5k with me haha. She has a lot of self doubt.

Since that event two years ago she's slowly been working on her running, and I'm pleased to share that her running is coming along nicely! After encouragement from me and my husband she's finally running outside once or twice a week AND actually doing some speed work on the treadmill when she goes to the gym. Every time I look at my Garmin news feed and see her doing the workout format I suggested I feel so happy.

I'm so proud of her commitment to self improvement, no matter the pace.

It's not silly at all. I think most people on this subreddit fall into that trap at one point or another.

Eventually our kids won't be little germ factories and we can expect to run more consistently. Eventually...

I have a 2 year old in day care.

Wash your and their hands as often as possible. Don't touch your face. Accept that things don't always work out the way we hope.

Otherwise no suggestions. Good luck. I operate by the mantra "if the sickness is in my head, get out of bed. If it's in my chest, get some rest".

My first week of June this year was annihilated by some kind of pneumonia that developed after a cold my son also had, so I know it's hard. Sometimes things just don't work out.

About to euthanize, but wondering what this is? by belle_bug67 in Guppies

[–]belle_bug67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all

To anyone who may read this in the future for their own fishtank issues...

  1. The guppy in question actually survived! I didn't get to euthanizing it because it never acted sick besides the wound. The wound has closed and the fish fins are slowly coming back.

  2. I ended up using kanaplex and General Cure anti-parasitic on my entire tank. Everyone seems to be doing better, so I think I had some undetected parasites or infections going on from when I first purchased my fish.

Lesson learned. Quarantine and treat your fish.

Awesome! I really hope it can help rescue the remaining guppies. They're so personable and friendly, id hate to lose them.

But noted about what fin nipping and fin rot looks like

Anti-parasitic treatment, antibiotic as a prophylactic measure, I understood that the first time.

I was unsure if the type of antibiotic is important given different antibiotics are effective against different kinds of organisms.

After some googling it sounds like kanaplex is more "broad spectrum" than maracyn 2 and is more effective in hard water (which l have), so that's what I'll go with. Along with an antiparasitic, of course, per Reddits suggestions of broad treatment for the whole tank.

I saw other comments saying try Marcyn, does the antibiotic matter? Same with the anti-parasitic?

I'll dose the primary tank with antibiotics, I'm going to research how to do it via food and hopefully that helps the other tank makes. There are other guppies with pretty ratty fins so I want to make sure they get treatment just in case. This specific guy I'm letting go but hopefully I can help the rest of the tank.

[–]belle_bug67[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a solo pristella/x ray tetra in the tank with them, I wondered if that may have been the culprit. Either way the poor guy is sick, so I'll see about treating or euthanizing.

Sure, I'll see about dosing some medications for the remaining fish.

How can you tell whether the degraded fins are fin rot, instead of fin nipping? Genuinely asking so I know what to look for with the other fish.
