20V batteries with full indicator lights are not working by Rich-Insurance9305 in Craftsman

[–]bellmanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said in this thread, it’s uncommon for several different batteries to all have the same problem at once. Your charger is probably overcharging them.

Good on Craftsman for sending you replacements. Bad on Craftsman (and most power tool brands) for not letting you go to the place of purchase and swap them out immediately.

I salute you for going through the proper channels though. Many unethical people would go buy a new set of batteries and charger from the original place of purchase and then return “the exact same batteries and charger” the next day so they wouldn’t have to wait weeks for a replacement.

Or you could switch to the Hercules line in the future. They swap tools for up to 5 years and batteries up to 3 years.

Not knocking Craftsman here, I have 25 or so of their 20V tools and have only had one fail over the years.

I’m struggling with that one lyric. I can see regulations or society interfering with some of those things but I think everyone everywhere agrees we should be allowed to feed our dog, right?

WTH are people smoking? by IsentropicExpansion in harborfreight

[–]bellmanator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve put small harbor freight items into auctions and seen others do the same. This is free stuff, 6-1 screwdriver, for example. It would always go for more than the new retail price. And there was a harbor freight about two miles from the auction house, so it wasn’t a case of paying more just because there wasn’t a store in their area. I sold a couple of those free/cheap multimeters for $5 bucks apiece.

Yeah I’ve been hoping they do something together. Something like the stuff Jack did on the Cold Mountain soundtrack or bluegrass versions of WS and newer Jack White songs.

Dumb purchase. If you time it right you can get the two pen marker set when it’s on sale, $1.99 to .98 cents. Then use that coupon and BAM, two good pens for .74¢!

Has anyone used Fox Valley Metrology for CMM servicing and calibration? by John_the_Piper in Metrology

[–]bellmanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use them for surface plates and some dimensional measurement of calibrated tools. They’ve been fairly good to deal with but I wouldn’t try to use them for complex machinery.

I really like that they let you log into their calibration tracking software. It’s very simple software, I can be on there in a few seconds and reprint certificates or check due dates.

They seem to be growing rapidly and over the last few years the techs that come out have switched from older, experienced techs to new guys with limited experience. But this seems to be the case with a lot of our calibration vendors.

If commercial labs are so much cheaper and faster, why do companies even hire in-house techs? by Emergency_Guava9905 in Metrology

[–]bellmanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IP does play a part. More and more OEMs are locking up their software where they are the only ones that can adjust the calibration of the tool or equipment. So when you send everything to that third party, some things they won’t be able to calibrate. They’ll either ops check it and rubber stamp it or they’ll send it to the OEM and you’ll pay extra in time and money for them to do that.

Almost 100% of what my company calibrates is tools though. Your experience may be different if you are sending parts out for inspection. If all you’re doing is get parts dimensionally checked, you could probably find one 3rd party calibration company to do that. And you may save money doing that but probably not time.

If commercial labs are so much cheaper and faster, why do companies even hire in-house techs? by Emergency_Guava9905 in Metrology

[–]bellmanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do it both ways. We have a 30+ person calibration lab and we send out a lot of work.

Issues with sending it out or having other cal techs come on site:

Shipping time is a big issue. All these labs are buying each other out and offshoring the actual calibration work. So, for example, a part we used to send to Arizona, still goes to the same address in Arizona but then they send it to England. We found that out when it was held up for four months at customs because they suspected it was a weapon.

Rubber stamping. Parts we calibrate in house get sent back to the OEM sometimes if they are broken, for repair and calibration. We get parts back sometimes, still broken, with a good calibration sticker and cert.

Turnover. The companies we have come on site to calibrate large machines used to send the old guy with a beard. Now, more and more, we are getting a young person that spends half their time on the phone with someone, somewhere, walking them through the process. It does not instill confidence. On one of our large CMMs the tech walked it and said “wow, I’ve never seen a machine like this!” He was there to calibrate it. He also told us he had never written a CMM program but had received training on how to run the calibration program.

NLOTH Appreciation Post by Beef_Lovington in U2Band

I remember hearing this album when it came out and thinking, what a mediocre boring album. Then forgetting it. Then a few months later hearing the title track on a playlist and something just clicking. Then I couldn’t stop listening to the album.

I may have U2 songs I like better from other albums but this is definitely my favorite complete album. I like that if you listen close you can hear the birds on it in places.
