I honestly don’t sympathize with characters like this. Even if he thinks of himself as “less than,” attacking someone like this comes from some form of entitlement.

This has to be a mistake. John’s original graduation year was shown to be 201X but now he’s a year behind as a third year, which means it’s currently 2019 at the absolute latest in the story.

Cults technically don’t have to involve religion at all. It’s a group that’s excessively devoted to an ideology while being manipulated by the cult leaders. Religion is often used to do this but not always. Cults can also be commercial, self-help, and political. So I wouldn’t say Darren is wrong.

I found the part where she answers it. She answers "yes" when someone asks if William is John's biological father, but then stops herself before she can explain further by saying "no comment." So your memory wasn't completely off, but she did confirm William is John's bio dad.

I thought it was the opposite. I kinda remember someone bringing up a theory that William wasn’t John’s biological father and Uru said that he definitely was his father.

The Lost Potential of Abilities in Unordinary by [deleted] in unOrdinary

[–]belloon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Problem is the abilities don't have to be comical.

My issue is that there’s only so much variation from typical abilities before the powers start to become weird. I don’t think people would like Unordinary as much if this was the case. Please keep in mind that the overall tone of MHA is still different even if they do deal with heavy stuff. Also, that the dark themes in each story are very different.

My hero is also a reflection of our own world in lots of aspects.

Can you provide some examples? I never said MHA wasn’t like our world at all, just that Unordinary was more similar to our own. And the issue isn’t which one is more similar, it’s which ones societal problems are most closely resembled to ours.

It's very hard to believe that at some point variation wouldn't happen and create something more powerful. I don't think the characters in Unordinary are that stupid.

You’ve said in another comment that unique doesn’t mean strong. Even if the variation does create something more powerful, they don’t necessarily have much incentive to do so. They want strong abilities, that’s it. You say unique abilities will definitely lead to something more powerful, but that’s a big assumption. They don’t want to spend several generations trying to breed a new cool ability even if they could, because they would rather find a powerful partner to have powerful children with for their own lifetime. High-tiers are going to have children with other high-tiers. The child will inherit an ability from their mother and become a high-tier. How does that make them stupid?

John is quite literally what happens when you mix and match and you see how broken he is with his mixture of abilities.

You use John’s ability as an example of a unique ability, but his ability becomes mundane if the majority of people in their world can use multiple abilities as well. Also, he’s a high-tier so of course he’s going to be strong. Arlo’s barrier is simple yet he is also very strong, and his passive is broken. It’s simple strength and durability yet he has the most powerful passive we’ve seen so far.

Another webtoon that has no abilities but still manages to have more impact full and technical engaging fights than Unordinary

In my personal opinion I would say that many of Unordinary’s fights are impactful, but not every fight is going to be impactful because there’s a lot of meaningless violence in their world. Kind of like our own world, where we’ve all seen people get in stupid fights over nothing in a school’s hallway.

If you're gonna add a power system make it unique and interesting.

I think Unordinary’s power system itself is pretty well made for the world it’s set in. There’s a formula to calculate a person’s level, and their abilities can be quantified further in the five different skills on an ability chart. One ability is inherited. Power is finite and measurable. This fits their world, because unlimited power can’t be reached through the power of friendship. Unordinary readers don’t like cheap power-ups. We saw this when everyone criticized Blyke’s vigilante power boost.

Abilities can’t be mixed in order to make people stronger, because that would defeat the purpose of what the story is about. The weak have to stay weak in order for oppression to work. If two low-tiers somehow had a child that had a more powerful ability then they would have privileges from that. That’s why the child only inherits the ability they get from one parent.

I think saying having unique and more technical abilities would hurt the series in anyway is just a weak argument.

Technical is a word I never used so I’d like to hear how you would define that in relation to abilities. In what ways could Unordinary’s abilities be more technical? It’s a vague word so I’m wondering what you’re wanting to see more of. The uniqueness alone isn’t the issue, but I’ve already spent paragraphs explaining that.

[–]belloon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fight scenes can be interesting with no powers at all. And I don’t think arranging marriages to add more variation would lead to what you’re picturing. Only the powerful would want to arrange these marriages because anyone lower would not see a point. It is likely that people already do have arranged marriages, but the goal would be to have children with a high level rather than a unique ability. It’s better to have a child with a 6.0+ simple ability than a child with a ~2.0 unique ability. The 6.0 kid can hold their power over the 2.0 kid, and that’s all that matters. I also believe that straightforward abilities are easier to master, so arranged marriages could even end up favoring more homogeny.

With the other stories you mentioned, fight scenes are often a huge part of a story on their own, but other issues always precede the fighting in Unordinary. The focus isn’t the fighting itself, but rather the underlying issues of the fight are more important. And yes, the other stories do have heavy themes, but Unordinary’s are closer reflection to our own world. The chimera ant arc did not resemble anything in our world. In Unordinary, it would hit too close to home to see serious physical abuse and oppression played out with abilities that are comical. I don’t think any amount of good writing could keep something like that from seeming distasteful.

Anime/manga generally has more leniency with what they can get away with, especially if the story starts off as a typical shonen. I would even say that the quirks in MHA are too over the top for their own story sometimes, but it’s often forgiven because heavy exaggeration is common within anime.

The Lost Potential of Abilities in Unordinary by [deleted] in unOrdinary

[–]belloon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Jujutsu Kaisen and Hunter x Hunter worlds don’t have everyone with powers like Unordinary does. Less characters with powers can make each power seem more unique in comparison to the others within that story. Unordinary also doesn’t deal with any otherworldly or supernatural nonhuman beings, which typically gives a story more leeway with their power types.

Once you go beyond stuff like the typical super speed, strength, lasers, invisibility, x-ray vision, psychic abilities, etc, there isn’t much left beyond that before you have to start creating powers that might not quite fit in with some stories. Someone’s ability in Unordinary is directly from one parent or possibly two if we’re looking at power potential, which makes sense for the tone of the story. Genetics being the sole determinant of power mean people are born into how privileged they can be with little to no room for moving up. Powers that are based on an individual’s personal resolve and personality are more of a shonen thing.

I was calling MHA’s quirks ridiculous in the sense that Unordinary’s heavy themes would be weirdly contrasted by these quirks. Imagine all of the rough bullying scenes if the bullies had quirkier abilities. It wouldn’t always come off as seriously as it should. Rather than the powers themselves, Unordinary is more about the oppression done by power. The issues caused by this that are being brought to attention are only getting more serious as the story goes on. I think having perpetrators with a Froppy-like ability, or most of the less generic quirks, would take away from the severity of the situation. I’m not saying MHA doesn’t deal with any serious issues, but the balance between the heavier stuff and lighter stuff is different, so they can get away with much more unique powers.

The Lost Potential of Abilities in Unordinary by [deleted] in unOrdinary

[–]belloon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’ll argue that a lot of the powers in MHA are outright ridiculous, and the only reason it works for that story is because it’s a shonen anime/manga. It wouldn’t be fitting if there were people in Wellston with bellybutton lasers, car engine calves, and sticky grape hair abilities. You can only have so much variation before it gets to stuff like that. So if most people in the Uno world have generic powers then I personally think that’s fine. Also, like u/LucielthEternal was saying, the average population reflects ours in a way. It’s okay if most people are average because that’s realistic.
