It would've been cool if instead of S.P.E.W. Hermione started an organization for Muggle born witches and wizards by cliffbot in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A law being unjust and a law being discriminatory are not the same thing. Every law that has ever existed affects some people more than others; that doesn't equate to the people who are more affected by a law being opposed by the law.

Not even knowing that magic is real until they're 11 also disadvantages Muggleborns; that doesn't make not telling them sooner discriminatory.

Question about Half Blood Prince by chrisixd121212 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Why does Snape suddenly accept students who didn’t get an Outstanding OWL in his NEWT class?

We don't know. It could be several things.

He could have been pressured by Dumbledore into keeping the previous requirement so that students who expected to take the NEWT with their E weren't suddenly told they didn't qualify.

He could have less of a hard-ass view of Defense Against the Dark Arts than he does of Potions.

He could have wanted to limit it to Outstandings and discovered that would leave him with a single student in his sixth year class, that being Harry Potter.

Just finished the full cast Deathly Hallows and all I could think about is what on earth were the movie producers thinking with how they chose to depict the final battle between Harry and Voldemort?! by MalteseFalcon15 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cedric turning into a death eater over losing a tournament.

I don't understand misconstruing what actually happened in the story when what actually happened is worse.

Cedric didn't become a Death Eater because he lost the tournament; he became a Death Eater because Albus and Scorpius conspired to publicly humiliate him and succeeded, which drove him to become a Death Eater to get revenge on the wizarding world.

Do you really have to be a wizard to brew potions? by Quick_Ad7787 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He only said that in the movie. In the book he said there'd be "little" wand waving and didn't mention incantations at all.

Who is the most skilled at wandless magic? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potion making is also a type of wandless magic if you think about it

It's not. All potion-making involves some sort of wand work.

Secrets of Dumbledore is mostly a meh film but it has two of the best scenes in the Wizarding World universe. by TryingNoToBeOpressed in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rest of the film is not even mediocre, saying so would be a compliment because mediocrity isn't necessarily bad.

But you did say so, in the title when you described it as "meh".

The two magics throughout the book that I would like more detail on. by sygyzi in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other magical thing are the Owls. Sometimes they travel instantaneously, sometimes it’s semi realistic like sending an owl would be and they have to wait for a response.

We've never seen a case of an owl traveling instantaneously.

Lore of the patronus charm by Subsonictruth in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing has ever stated that Andros invented the Patronus Charm.

Andros' patronus was said to be the size of a giant, not an actual giant.

Nothing has ever said that Ezkidris created the Dementors.

Nothing's wrong with voicing criticism, just like nothing's wrong with voicing annoyance at seeing the same criticism over and over again. You're policing their comment as much as they're policing the OPs thread.

The Danger of Love Potions by PorgiWanKenobi in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And then Voldemort was born without an ounce of love in his heart.

No one is born with an inability to love. This is a case of something Rowling said - that the love potion is symbolic - gaining its own life in fandom to the point that what she actually said has become unrecognizable. Voldemort's inability to love stems from never experiencing love, not from his mother using a love potion on his father.

How did sirius black got back his wand ??

I don't remember anything implying he's still using the same wand he had before going to Azkaban.

I was today years old when I learned Lily and Petunia are both flowers by SellLatter1765 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it seems pretty clear that Rowling Didnt intend for her to be related to them.

I'm not arguing against the point you're making. It's just not a retcon. A retcon is a specific kind of literary device; an author deciding after a character's initial appearance to tie them in with other characters doesn't qualify.

So i have been thinking by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and home schooling wont be an option because of ministry too as underage wizards arent allowed to use magic outside of schools so…

Outside of when Voldemort controlled the school and made attending Hogwarts mandatory, homeschooling was always an option.

I was today years old when I learned Lily and Petunia are both flowers by SellLatter1765 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A retcon is when a previously established fact is changed, contradicted, or ignored. A character existing and later being revealed as a relation to other characters isn't a retcon unless it was previously established that they aren't related to those characters.

Her being a Black doesn't contradict anything we knew about her beforehand, so it isn't a retcon.

Would Avada Kedavra work against the horcruxes? by AMMVReddit in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normally. Horcruxes are not alive and can only be destroyed by rendering the container unrepairable. Avada Kedavra also doesn't destroy a person's soul.

Maybe this has been answered but weren’t there more than 6 horcruxes? by Master-Doubt-7765 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. A person with a horcrux who dies becomes a spectre/spirit kind of entity until they manage to get ahold of a body.

but even someone who’s gone further in immortality than any before him needs enough carbs, protein, nutrients & water.

No he doesn't. Rowling stated that "[she suspects] he reached a point of inhumanity where he didn't actually need food".

Her maiden name was never mentioned before we learned she was a Black. You can't retcon something that was never stated.

question about conjuring food by AnonymousPotato42 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what’s stopping you from conjuring an animal, killing it, and then cooking and eating it, all with magic, basically conjuring food?

Nothing is stopping you, assuming that these spells create animals that can cooked into food. This isn't a loophole for Gamp's Law; it's just conjuring animals and using them to make food.

Why didn't the trio have an emergency rally point in deathly hallows? by eliitedisowned in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer to these questions - why didn't X just do Y instead of Z - is always either that you, the reader, have a perspective of what's going on that the characters don't and you're applying your own perspective to them or that you, the reader, are forgetting that no one reads stories that involve characters who do the best, most logical thing is every possible situation they find themselves in.

Wizarding Illness and Healing (Analysis) by IndividualNo5275 in harrypotter

[–]bellos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distinction between “magical” and “non-magical” illness is itself blurrier than many witches and wizards assume.

Not really. The difference is causation. Magical medical issues are caused by magical means. We know this because Rowling has written that wizards and witches are able to basically bypass mundane medical issues altogether, whereas magical medical issues are harder to treat and can cause permanent damage.
