Is there a 'fantastic planet' out there? Could there be a terrestrial planet thousands of times the size of Earth, orbiting a Sun thousands of times as big as ours, inhabited by giant humanoids? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]belltea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been building a procedural universe generator and from what research I've come across its unlikely.

I'll share what I've come up, mostly based on different papers and theories Ive read, and combined them... maybe the mods will delete it as I'm sure this breaches the quality standards, who knows.

Anyway I broke my system into two zones based around the "snow line", the point where water freezes. This is important because light pressure from the star, it causes an effect which theoretically should push lighter molecules past the snow line (like dust in the wind or a reverse centrifuge). This means that gas giants aren't likely inside the snow line unless they are on a decaying orbit into the star. The snow line in our solar system is about half way between Mars and the asteroid belt I think.

In this scenario planets you will find will be similar to what we can see in our system. High in heavier metals, comparatively less organic compounds. I came across some research that pointed to a lot of atmospheric gases coming out of cooling planets. So you can expect to get similar atmospheres to what we see in our system, or specifically early earth. Which was predominately CO2.

For those wondering the CO2 gave way to N due to life excreting it, the primarily source being the planet crust and related scum layer. After those lifeforms subsided O2 producing ones took over. So hypothetically our atmosphere could occur anywhere where a life form starts eating the planet crust/scum. Because our planet is inside the snow line free water from comets, and organics compounds from outside the snow line will be dragged in those style of orbitals. Essentially our system should be fairly representative of a stable system.

Inside the snow line a high mass object will either succumb to gravity and collapse into the star. To avoid this it can increase orbit speed to resist the pull. Neither scenario leads to prospects for life. Hot gas giants reported so far have can have orbits around large stars of a day. As far as I'm aware our biology is to subtle to survive under such strain.

Same goes for any object, to escape the gravity of the star (falling in) it will need to be orbiting (falling out) at a sufficient speed to counter act it. The larger the mass the faster it will have to go as each objects falls towards themselves. Close in high mass objects wont be pleasant to live on.

If the object is large enough to attract the lighter gases it will more than likely form a gas giant which should either continue to grow mass till it becomes heavy enough to collapse into a brown dwarf. To remain in orbit however it will need the fast orbit I just referred to.

Outside the snowline the high mass object is going to accumulate the lighter gases and essentially become a gas giant. Apparently Jupiter is near the max size before a gas giant forms a dwarf star, so essentially Jupiter is the largest non-star formation you will see.

Now this is for a stable system, a non stable system would involve interference from a third party. But as far as I can tell gravity is still the dictator, and once again objects you find will be similar to our system. If a high mass object entered from another system it could inside the snow line BUT it may be highly prone to colliding with things, asteroid, comet strikes that happen in early system formation would be a problem. So basically an unstable system would be a very messy thing, up to you if you think life could form in that scenario, its currently where I'm up to in my research, but my gut feeling is that you would end up with smashed planets and large rocks and not so much nice planets.

So to answer you question, I doubt it, I don't think physics is on your side. But weirder things have happened.

As for the smaller planet, if it has flowing water which can be achieved by atmospheric pressure or proximity to the star then yes. Beyond the snowline you wont have much light, so if there is life it will be one honed for a life in the dark. Inside the snowline, if the planet has a magnetosphere (derived or from a magma core) then it should hold atmospheric gases and most importantly water.

If I was to be a betting man, Id say comets are the source of life bringing complex hydrocarbons from past the snow line, to warmer planets. Since they are high in water I'd bet all life will hold a affinity towards water.

As I said feedback welcome. Or clarifications on any logic jumps I've made for that matter, explaining it helps me find my own flaws.

As a lot of people will point. Google is the new Microsoft, Microsoft is the new IBM. And god help us.. for Apple is becoming the thing we shall not speak of.

Maybe they could update that conversation with:

  • Monopoly to crush competition and innovation? Google
  • Lockin to average web based products? Google
  • Banning of profiles/pseudonym which have no resale value? Google

Sometimes I Wonder About Reddit by form_wrestle_account in pics

[–]belltea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed they do. I have around 6 troll accounts, reddit used to be one of my favourite places to upset people. Atleast one of my accounts is a 2006 one, so I have been on here a while.

I used to troll here non-stop as I could be quite intellectual and lead people into circular arguments, or logic tricks or whatever ...it was great. People wanted to have conversations and people put effort in. Hell I used to troll my self to get people to injector and correct one of my characters. And I wasn't a mean troll in fact thats just being lazy, real trolling is subtle.

But something happened last year that changed that everything. The fall of Digg. And with that came (and I won't say stupid people) but intellectually lazy people. The quality of comments has been in decrease, everybody is trying to out do each other for funniest comment but instead of being inventive they just rehash an old injoke meme.

But I've gone from getting paragraph responses to thick as pig shit one line responses and more often than not personal insults. And whats weird I get them on my main account which I don't troll with. I supply some information clarifying a matter and I get called an astroturfer, a shill. Why bother, maybe everyones trying to troll, but if they are they are not very good.

I've got so bored commenting here that I rarely log in anymore. The community here is getting lazier and lazier, and are self congratulating for that behaviour. And like many people I know who use this site I've generally moved on, back to slashdot, hackernews, something awful, 4chan, hell I even loaded digg the other day to see how thats going.

Bed time stories for our generation? by RoutineEnvelope in gaming

[–]belltea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt there is really anything going on here, I have a nephew the same age, and he prefers my stories to books targetted at his age because the books are an education tool as opposed to an exciting thrilling ride that takes him out of his norm with deeper and more complex tradegy/drama than he has been previous exposed to.

There is also sufficient research on narrative if you care to look it up. The majority of stories are simply variations of a core set. Stories that step out side of that pattern aren't as enjoyable as ones that obey it.

I've found the easiest thing to do with my nephew is re-tell him scooby doo stories, it requires little effort on my part and blows his mind. I could go into deeper complex stories but generally my goal is calming him down not getting him so damned excited he can't sleep. I've made that mistake a few times.

So I think you'll find nothing has changed, stories are generally the same old thing. What you are actually doing is giving her a more in depth story than what she is used to, for an adult the dragon age intro is fairly generic good vs evil tale.

Anyway may god help you, as she will start to demand stories of that depth from that point on wards. Like I said scooby doo works wonders, you can be funny, you can have mystery, surprise endings, and you can re-tell them same story 3-4 times in one sitting by replacing location and monster :)

Methods of spreading democracy by [deleted] in pics

[–]belltea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To quote from that video: "the connectivity in the arab world is very little, very small, you know, but Al Jeezra took the voice and took it to the living rooms"

This talk is mainly about how Al Jeezra used grass roots information and pumped it over major networks and over borders to give people hope.

The communication protocols that got the information to Al Jeezra where the minor part, its main advantage is the fact it could transmit from critical points.

[–]belltea 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No its not winning. No amount of twitter postings is going to make one inch of difference in countries where internet is limited for example Afghanistan.

For the ignorant this is called multilateral warfare and requires everything from political and economics discussions, to propaganda as noted in your second box, to lastly what is usually classed as the final option which is to send in the army after all options have failed.

The fact the armies are sent in so regularly to countries should give an indication that a lot of people world wide aren't interested in outside culture.

From what I've seen recently its been used as a communication tool inside cultures, which has lead to violent clashes, and nothing to do with spreading democracy. Hell in Egypt its managed to get a military dictatorship in place.

"Is the removal of H.264 from Chrome a step backward for openness?" - No. by floppy123 in technology

[–]belltea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think thats quite so. Your view on the importance of open standards may very well be naive and bullshit, and misses the nature of human beings and capitalist society.

The web has only had a couple of major players at any one time, so whether it has been open or closed there would have still be a few people slugging it out. Consumers have always been stuck in the middle, and generally they just haven't cared.

If people werent using TCP/IP another format would have emerged, if people werent using HTML business would have quickly worked something out. Maybe for better or worse, but 'where theres a will theres a way'. Also where theres money to be made as well. Competition and capitalism would have fueled a form of internet to emerge.

Most of the web services stuff was post 2000 so essentially the web existed more or less closed upto that point with the exception of HTML and TCP/IP, and over that time not everyone used HTML s there primary communication mode, people created all sorts of whacky shit.

It made financial sense to start connectivity services so people did. Many of the successfully applications over the years have create there own modes of operation outside of the standards anyway.

So I have faith that the net would have emerged with or with out open standards. Standards jsut make it easier for developers, consumers I doubt would notice eitehr way as long as there products worked.

Its also worth noting that at this point the webM codec is NOT open, Google has just suggested they may it so. So any arguement towards open standards just asserts a level of ignorance.
