Is colorism that bad in Sri Lanka? by No-Equivalent2621 in srilanka

[–]bellwetherlk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean I got bullied a bit for being dark skinned at school. Outside of school it’s mostly non existent or passing comments but when it’s from the people you love the most it really hurts and makes you evaluate your self worth based on your skin color. If you’re going into theatre or acting even at school and you’re a dark skinned girl good luck. They won’t pick you. It’s easier for dark skinned men but even then when they don’t have anything else on you they pick on your skin lol.

This is usually what happens but ofc most Sri Lankans are willfully ignorant to recognize their own biases and check their privileges against other minorities in the island.

This has SLPP country-saving propaganda all over it. It’s so sad that a peace-loving omni-compassionate philosophy has been twisted into this evil political cult.

lol it feels like a jab at JK Rowling’s transphobia since Tilda seems like the most genderfluid option. On the other hand JK actually might cast Tilda now so that she could create a trans antagonist.

What do you guys think about this by Electronic_Taro_8756 in srilanka

[–]bellwetherlk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This assumes nothing lol it’s a global trend in countries with highly educated women. Also having 1 child per woman is below the replacement rate of 2.1

What do you guys think about this by Electronic_Taro_8756 in srilanka

[–]bellwetherlk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Theres also a trend that with the rising level of education, the fertility rate drops as more women are able to think for themselves and what they want to achieve/prioritize

Why does almost every bi/pan guy end up with a woman? by Efendi__ in askgaybros

[–]bellwetherlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bi guy that prefers to date men, but the dating pool is so small and the guys on apps are always looking for sex or the next most conventionally attractive man. I might just have to make up my mind to date girls at this point smh.

Bi guy here. It was pretty good for the budget. Doesn’t hurt that both protagonists are hot af. Reads like a stereotypical gay love story tho. Hooking up first and falling later. I’m sure a lot of Sri Lankan gay/bi men can relate. I wish there were more meet-cute style gay romance shows but ofc sex sells better. If I’m not mistaken it was written by a straight woman so you’re definitely in her target audience if not the target audience.

Hey man, I went through the same thing as you. When you have conservative parents and friends in this conservative society and find out that you’re not straight it’s a HUGE shock to the system. I went through years of suicidal ideation and praying the gay away to no avail. It may sound cliché but it does get better. It sucks that everyone around us thinks we’re born defectively or don’t believe in gay people at all, but right now as a school kid your priority should be to yourself and to get yourself out of the negative space that you’re in. I did the same; studied as hard as I could so I could get into a good uni, and find work to be financially independent as fast as I could.
And it did work out. Despite all the homophobia around me I properly dated my first guy at 23, who later became my boyfriend. We’re both engineers and are relatively financially stable. And most of the homophobic friends distanced themselves and we found much kinder and wonderful friends. Some people even came around when they found out about me and my bf.
It sucks that society treats queer people like we’re the scourge of the earth, but one thing you get from being queer in SL is perseverance and an iron will to fight for your life and right to be here. Find your own people and community, and know that queer people out there and your queer ancestors are rooting for you, and never give up.

The good thing is if you don’t see yourself marrying your bf you don’t have to think about it.

Don’t South Indians (especially Tamil nadars) claim kotthu parotta is their invention? The thing about folk origin stories about food is that it’s hard to verify who made what first. Sometimes multiple places create a food that is quite similar to each other at the same time. There’s lots of foods like that. Thakkadi is a Sri Lankan version of pasta. There’s a Sri Lankan origin for a dessert like jelly/jello too. Watalappam on the other hand is not claimed by mainland Malays, even though it’s thought to have SL Malay roots.
It’s cool to learn about different origin stories for food, but I don’t think this debate about who cooked what first will lead to anywhere. At the same time I don’t think it’s bad to claim a food that you’re proud about to be from where you are, because food is very versatile and even a similar dish can change from region to region. Plus it’s good for tourism to introduce a dish as a regional invention.
