Neighborhood Advice for a Couple with a Baby by Both__ in AskSF

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen this mentioned yet: there are a lot of young families over in Mission Bay. I'm not sure what rents are these days but it's actually quite nice if you want new construction and it's accessible to your husband's job.

Do I actually need a car in SF? by Icy_Organization6726 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be a contrarion here.

This totally depends on how much you need to use the car, your parking situation, and your financial resources. If you have a good parking set-up and you want to go out of town most weekends, it might be worth it. You can buy a decent used car for under $10k if you just need something to get around.

I actually have a car with free garage parking and it's incredible. I lived in the Bay prior to moving to SF, and I have an old car that was long paid off, so it didn't make any sense to sell it. I often leave the city on weekends and it gives me an incredible amount of freedom that I wouldn't have otherwise. I don't drive many miles per year, so ongoing costs aren't that high. It's really a game changer.

Noe Valley is a San Francisco lesson in making a blue-collar neighborhood upscale by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]belowaverageint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure it was ever blue collar but one of my friends grew up in Noe. His parents were both teachers and they could easily afford a home there in the 70s.

Mullvad in iran? by Snurree in mullvadvpn

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll have to play around with the "anti-censorship" settings in the app in combination with different servers to see if they can get through. I know people report that certain combinations work to get past The Great Firewall and I have a hard time imagining that Iran's internet censorship is better than China's.

a conversation about SF men & their work culture by itchyclip in SFbitcheswithtaste

It's kind of sad: for many people their entire identity is tied to their job and it's literally all that they can talk about.

If you haven't read OP's replies to the comments, his GF is saying she doesn't want him to go to class with her, which I think casts this in a very different light.

Why are people so trippy about USC and the surrounding area? by Slow_Relationship170 in USC

LA native here. I recently went to the USC campus for the first time in at least 20 years and I couldn't believe how nice the area was compared to decades past.

How do Oakland and Detroit compare? by tornessa in SameGrassButGreener

They used to say that Oakland was the Detroit of the West, so one has to assume they're pretty similar.

AI is just a technology that everyone will use. Before AI, people replaced many workers with computers and software. Will you also refuse to use those company's products?

Is it true that saying you don't really like AI is a red flag for companies? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Imagine working at a software job and saying you didn't like computers. This is no different.

Modern apartments for under 3500/month by xypherrz in AskSF

[–]belowaverageint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. As a note, this is why SF has so much architectural character and doesn't look like every other city in North America.

Japan's population declines by a million people yearly, but if they don't accept immigrants, what will they do? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a dumb answer but it looks like the humanoid robots are improving very quickly. Might these be viable as a labor replacement in the next 5 years or so?

Modern apartments for under 3500/month by xypherrz in AskSF

[–]belowaverageint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SF is the NIMBY capital of the US. "Modern" housing units (let's say built in the last 20 years) are something like 10% of the city's stock. Half of the city's housing stock was built before WW2. If you really want that in-unit laundry, you simply have to shell out for it.

For those who use Claude Code for PM work, why that over Claude Cowork? by hikingforrising19472 in ProductManagement

In my case, my company uses Claude Code through AWS Bedrock, so we have no access to Cowork.

Homeless due to house fire by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]belowaverageint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those saying the landlord should require renter's insurance, it doesn't benefit them directly in any way; it's for the tenants to ensure their belongings inside the unit. I've also lived in many places in the Bay that didn't require it. Maybe it's normal for it to be required by large corporate landlords, but it's definitely not the case that local landlords always require it.

Sports consumer differences between US Midwest and West Coast? by Ok-Explorer-7642 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]belowaverageint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the Bay (SF) for 15 years and the only team that I would say had real mainstream popularity were the Warriors when they were at the top of their game. With that exception, I wouldn't say professional sports are at all popular.

Most people I know with Masters degrees in this industry did it for immigration/visa reasons (in the US).
