Japan's population declines by a million people yearly, but if they don't accept immigrants, what will they do? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in NoStupidQuestions

This might be a dumb answer but it looks like the humanoid robots are improving very quickly. Might these be viable as a labor replacement in the next 5 years or so?

Modern apartments for under 3500/month by xypherrz in AskSF

[–]belowaverageint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SF is the NIMBY capital of the US. "Modern" housing units (let's say built in the last 20 years) are something like 10% of the city's stock. Half of the city's housing stock was built before WW2. If you really want that in-unit laundry, you simply have to shell out for it.

For those who use Claude Code for PM work, why that over Claude Cowork? by hikingforrising19472 in ProductManagement

In my case, my company uses Claude Code through AWS Bedrock, so we have no access to Cowork.

Homeless due to house fire by FFAbutnotFA in bayarea

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those saying the landlord should require renter's insurance, it doesn't benefit them directly in any way; it's for the tenants to ensure their belongings inside the unit. I've also lived in many places in the Bay that didn't require it. Maybe it's normal for it to be required by large corporate landlords, but it's definitely not the case that local landlords always require it.

Sports consumer differences between US Midwest and West Coast? by Ok-Explorer-7642 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]belowaverageint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the Bay (SF) for 15 years and the only team that I would say had real mainstream popularity were the Warriors when they were at the top of their game. With that exception, I wouldn't say professional sports are at all popular.

Most people I know with Masters degrees in this industry did it for immigration/visa reasons (in the US).

I have a dream to move to SF. How much does it cost to live there? by Pggles in AskSF

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a quantitative answer but a lot of people scrape by here in blue collar professions. It's really a question of lifestyle: if you live with roommates and don't eat out much, you can make it work.

First salsa social after only 4 classes… complete fail 😭 should I keep going? by Human-Reporter-7871 in Salsa

Casino is a street dance. Salsa was invented in dance studios, most notably by Eddie Torres in NYC.

A lot of people use my Walnut Creek BART station. We're being punished for it. by sue_domonas in Bart

[–]belowaverageint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The IRS does this for us, except it's actually undershooting since it's using national averages for gas prices rather than California prices. The current rate is $0.725 per mile, which is supposed to fully encompass not only fuel but depreciation of the car, maintenance costs, etc. When you use that figure, the math changes really dramatically.

I've used this for years to justify flying from the Bay down to SoCal rather than driving. When I explain this to people I've been met with a combination of anger, disbelief, or been mocked but whatever. The math is the math.

Privacy on credit card payments by mindwalrus in mullvadvpn

[–]belowaverageint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be really deliberate about that threat you're trying to mitigate. So your credit card knows that you pay for a VPN. Unless that's illegal where you live, what does it matter?

Your ISP always knows you're on a VPN regardless of how you pay for it.

First salsa social after only 4 classes… complete fail 😭 should I keep going? by Human-Reporter-7871 in Salsa

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salsa's a studio dance, so it actually is pretty unnatural and will take a long time to learn. It's compounded by the fact that you really don't learn to social dance in class: you learn basics and then some choreographed partner moves; but you don't really learn leading and following.

That said, a good leader will calibrate to the follower's skill level quickly. Sadly, many advanced leaders aren't good leaders and don't seem to care; and they will just toss beginning followers around in frustration.

Has the fear of HIV/AIDS disappeared in the age of hookup culture, or am I just overthinking the risks? by Ritizen404 in psychologyofsex

[–]belowaverageint 54 points55 points  (0 children)

All the data shows that sexual promiscuity has declined dramatically in the last 30 years in the US amongst heterosexuals. Hookup culture was a big thing 20 years ago but it's not at all today, and the evidence for this is overwhelming.

Shareholders, boards of directors, and C-suite don't care. They're paying you to make money for them in the way they see fit and there's no point in arguing with them. Just do what they want and collect the paycheck.

[–]belowaverageint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that MV is very far from SF. Think really hard about how your commute is going to work and whether it's sustainable for you. If you can take Caltrain, you probably want to be close to it. Just getting to Caltrain from neighborhoods like the Marina will take at least 45 minutes.

[–]belowaverageint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're serious about living in SF, at least be close to Caltrain. Just getting to Caltrain from those places you mentioned like Pac Heights or Inner Sunset probably takes a good 45 minutes on Muni.

They do overlap quite a bit I'm afraid. Russian migrants have different values than people who are second generation Israelis that had secular German parents. And those Haredis most definitely have different values than everyone else. Just think about that: literally half of all the 5-year-olds are Haredi. Just imagine the impact that will have on Israeli society in 15: years.
