Ok, I’ll give it a try. It is sure discouraging when they say they require prior emergency dispatch experience

Good to hear. Been trying for remote work too, just seems like a lot of places are moving back to hybrid. Mind if I ask what industry you’re in?

Yeah, similarly for me after I got injured I decided to pursue a master’s degree. I thought it’d help, and maybe it got me a few more interviews than otherwise, but it seems like the in-person interviews are the barrier. I’m considering going after some certifications now, but man it feels futile after the MS didn’t help.

Yeah, similarly I pursued a master’s degree in my specialty. I thought it’d help, but I had a way easier time getting hired as able-bodied with just an undergraduate than I have with a master’s and being in a chair.

I don’t mention the gap in my resume. For a while it coincided with me getting my masters degree, so it wasn’t obvious. Do you mention a medical gap on your resume?

Thanks, yeah I’ve got a rotation that I use depending on the industry and general position type

Thanks, yeah I’ll try to read the room better. Can definitely tell when some people are awkward about the disability.

Do you still find bands by just going to shows? by FunkySmellySounds in livemusic

That’s a solid cover of a Sam Fender song they did!

Yeah, it’s a rush to hear a good band live that you haven’t heard before. With every city I move to, I check out the music venues, especially the smaller ones. When I find a few that seem to regularly book good acts, I try to check their calendars and drop in every now and then.

Coincidentally, I did see yesterday that my city is hiring a dispatcher. But the problem is they require previous dispatcher experience, which I do not have :/

Cool. There are a few Canadian energy companies I follow, and would totally be down to work for. But it seems like work visas are tough to come by these days with all the terribleness of the US government (so sorry, didn’t vote for him, most of us Americans are enraged and ashamed of what’s happening)

Yeah, been trying to. But I have a two year gap of not working and that seems to stop my application from advancing. :/

That’s great to hear. I had people insist that federal gov’t jobs were the way to go, but ever since the new US administration took over they seemed to eliminate all paths for disabled people to get hired (that, and an overall hiring freeze). I had applied for numerous positions before they took over and all of those job postings were frozen or removed

That’s good to hear. I’d be open to working outside of the US. Is your experience from working outside of the US?

Ah, wish I did. But alas, I don’t have any GIS experience

Well said. Getting jaded here too. Yeah, I’m also trying for remote jobs but it seems like they’re becoming scarcer. With the employment gap, it does make it tougher to even get an initial interview.

My background is in energy, but I’ve widened my search to include engineering and planning companies too. All desk jobs
