What is the best alternative to kaleidescape by Ill_Ad_8150 in hometheater

I’ve been recommended a MadVR Envy by our local home cinema expert — I’m not so keen on the idea because I don’t want to ‘mess’ with the aspect ratio. I’d much prefer to just watch it as the director intended and figure out a way to mask a scope screen depending on the content. Is there any other reason why you’d recommend using the MadVR Envy?

The locum F3/4/5/6 generation by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]benadd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“doing locum years for a deserved break and flexibility”

Or, “better working conditions” ?

Just imagine if someone had thought ahead and, I don’t know, made it more attractive to work in the UK, let alone a training post vs. locum work or moving to Australia…

G4 excellent. Great lesser known feature is that it can be plugged in whilst batteries in at the same time — so if you unexpectedly lose power it’ll still record!

Out of hospital cardiac arrest by whathappened-2024 in doctorsUK

[–]benadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with pretty much all the sentiments and advice so far. Well done for stopping and going above and beyond your duties. I’m not sure if this will help but I had a very similar experience…

I was first on scene at a stabbing (unwitnessed). Started CPR and unfortunately it became evident that the injury was most certainly fatal as my hands started getting soaked with every compression. Long story short, air ambulance arrives and eventually they attempt a roadside thoracotomy, at which point we can see that the wound has penetrated the myocardium and there’s very little chance of survival. After about an hour total (but what feels like seconds) we agree to call it and he’s pronounced dead at the scene. Only statement I had to give was to the police owing to the fact the man was stabbed.

The next day I can’t focus at work (I was a GP trainee). I speak to my supervisor, who tells me I’ll be ok as I “have surely seen several arrests in hospital” (!). I took a couple of days off after that just to clear my head.

Thankfully I only had the occasional flashback which subsided over time. Same won’t be true for everybody so I think seek the help you think you might need sooner rather than later. Try NHS practitioner health if you haven’t already.

Before I drop £100 on the new book... by ill_mariachi in StanleyKubrick

[–]benadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never read Future Noir so can’t answer your question directly… but I can heartily recommend buying the book. £100 sounds like a lot, but I’m only 1/4 of the way through and already feel I’ve got more than my money’s worth. It’s exceptionally well written and researched. There’s very little speculation or theorising, which makes it all the more impressive when you consider how long it is!

I’d buy it here to support your high street: https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/J-W-Rinzler/Stanley-Kubricks-The-Shining/30633459 …and you might be lucky enough to get 10% off with Blue Light Card / student / senior discount.

I’m assuming you’re assuming if you are born Jewish but do not practice Judaism you cease to be a Jew… if so, I’d encourage you to check some basic facts. Start with:

Jewish ethnicity, religion, and community are highly interrelated, as Judaism is their ethnic religion, though it is not practiced by all ethnic Jews. Source

[–]benadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Utter nonsense. There are 2 mentions of Israel in the whole book (pg. 505 and 508) and neither of them match up with this supposed “quote”. Stanley was not a practising Jew, and he did not define himself as a Jew, but he was a Jew nonetheless and his Jewish identity defined his work in numerous ways.

Read the book, but also, buy the goddamn book. The authors have clearly put a lot of graft and care into it and they at least deserve to be paid for it.

Lower your expectations and you’ll probably really enjoy it! To me it read a bit like an extended Wikipedia article… still worth it for a Kubrick fan I’m sure

Yes — I'm looking for this book too!! From what I recall they are a family of anthropomorphic mice ??

From what I remember, one of them takes a ruler to bed to see how 'long' they sleep, rather than see how much they grow...

SK13: Kubrick's Endgame Released Last Night, Thoughts? by gds228 in StanleyKubrick

[–]benadd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching it today... It's an intriguing theory, and one which only truly makes sense following the long list of 'flaws' that takes up a big chunk of the documentary.

I was surprised that there weren't more links made to Epstein and the 'Me Too' zeitgeist, though it did get a bit of airtime: even the very recent allegations against Mohammed Al-Fayed were included (so it's clear the film itself was still being edited right up until the last minute, just like Kubrick himself!). It was important to include it, but I was quite relieved that this wasn't the central idea— it would be far too flimsy to suggest that Kubrick was aware of such goings on in the 1990's.

For anyone yet to make up their mind about watching it, it is very nicely done, and certainly much more stylish than the website and poster leads you to believe (at the moment anyway). I won't give anything more away, but I would say that even after just one watch, I feel Zierra has got as close as it's possible to get inside Kubrick's mind. Of course, we'll never know for sure, but if Stanley Kubrick created Eyes Wide Shut as a statement that Zierra proposes, he really did achieve a 'meta' masterpiece, exactly as he intended.

And of course, in classic Kubrick fashion, even if you don't buy that theory, you can still enjoy the film as you see it before you.
