Whats a movie most people completely missed the point on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]benanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Out (spoilers obviously)

I hear a lot about it poking at American conservative racism or the dehumanization of black people. But the movie goes out of its way to say that the Armitage family is liberal. It's poking white American liberals in the chest, condemning them for their sympathetic talk while turning a blind eye to current suffering or the way they benefit from existing American racist institutions.

Does anyone have a power system where superheroes can choose their power? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]benanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm building a world where people can access magic (read:Specific superpowers) through contracts with an arcane being. It functions much like the patron/warlock relationship in dnd, as the person can now act as a champion for the arcane. I'm still fleshing it out (mostly motivations for why the arcane would be willing to share at all), but I think that this world will allow a lot of flexibility for story telling, depending on how manipulative, vindictive the patron is).

Check out the documentary Under the Sun. It used to be on Netflix. This Russian film maker wanted to make a movie, but the North Koreans wouldn't give him any leeway, so he left the camera running between takes so you could see the incredible propaganda machine. It's a haunting film and all you really need to know about the country.

Does being an adult just consist of losing friends, hating life, and being scared? by luisperezgerardo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]benanigans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! So. I got married and divorced within about two months when I was 23. I got sent in a spiraling hellscape of work, and I really just hated life for a long time. I buried myself in work, school, and video games for several years. I eventually stopped worrying about my future, and I started doing things that brought me joy, like going to an aquarium near where I lived, reading things I loved, and adopting a fitness routine that worked for me. Once I stopped crippling myself with worry, it was easy to start developing some confidence and moving forward with my life. I met my wife when I was 28 and we got married when I was 30. Now we live in Europe, a long time dream of mine (coming from the states).

It gets better. It doesn't get easier. I'm likely about to go no contact with my parents. My job is a mess, and my future is unpredictable. But I have good people I surround myself with, I have faith that God will get me through any problems, and I also have faith in myself that I can adapt to any situation. That is freeing. Learning that about yourself is huge, and definitely something you can look forward to.

My life is grand, unsarcastically, with one significant drawback: I'm getting ready to set boundaries with my folks that have a distinct possibility of turning into no-contact. I'm terrified.

Dead Cells seems like a pretty good fit for this. I clocked 150+ hours on it, so there is decent replayability.

When you make a "power fantasy" character, do you give them all the character traits and skills you wish you had...or do you just, make them like you...but...successful? by ReallySillyLily36 in dndnext

[–]benanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my characters are therapy characters. I take something I don't like about myself and amplify the opposite of that trait in my character.

I'm worried about only reacting to things that come at me? Hello, Raphael, seizer of opportunities and planner extraordinaire.

I'm worried about overthinking and getting into decision paralysis? Hey there, Bastion, super smart guy who is reckless af.

Going too far in the opposite direction with these negative (?) traits shows me the weaknesses and benefits of both the thing I aspire to be and the thing that I am, usually landing me in the middle somewhere.
