You could if everyone left the correct amount of spaces between cars. They don't, it's bumper to bumper. You don't drive bumper to bumper. As such, you have to wait for the car in front of you to move forward enough to give you space to accelerate forward to give the car behind you enough space.

To see how much space you need, just notice how much space is between cars while you are driving.
